  1. No. Although I understand charm and woodworking details that you can’t find nowadays, the electricity and insulation would be the biggest reasons for me not to do it. Also, I hate rusty old radiators and the dust that accumulates under them. I don’t know the specifics of the house you’re dealing with, so I’m only speaking in general terms. With a house that old, I’d also be afraid of additions to a house that were added on a long time ago. I seem to remember my dh talking about one of his childhood homes that had an add-on to the kitchen, but the floor was slanted or bad foundation or something like that. Lack of outlet, lack of closets, earthen basements, lead paint, dust of ages. Those are some of the turn-offs that prevent us from ever considering a house even half that age.

I think the key is the "fillable" part.

Converting to a pdf is different than converting to a fillable pdf.

Yes, I agree. I’ve been searching using free, fillable, convert… all the right words, I think. But the free part always seems to be a free trial. So really it would cost me. I just want to convert one document.

include free in the search term.

I can do a conversion online, for free. There are bunch of word/pdf sites that will allow the home user to convert the odd document for free.  A business that wants to convert a lot of files will need to pay.

I'm not downloading software to my computer - but uploading the document I need converted, then I can download the converted document.

What website do you use? This is only one doc that he wants to convert.

I know my college dd used Google docs for fillable things.  I believe that is free.  I don't know how to make something go from Pages to Google Docs, but I imagine there is a way.

Thanks. I will look into this. I know my 27 year old uses Google docs all the time. So I’ll ask her if she has ever used it for fillable docs.

have you searched for "covert pages to pdf"?

I will do that when I have had to convert PDF/Word documents.

yes, but it seemed like I would need Adobe or PDF Gear. I’m looking for something free.

  5. Dh has a Mac. So he created a document using Pages. He would like to turn it into a fillable PDF.

My first thought was that he would need Adobe to do that, right? But that costs money, I think. Is there a free way to do this?

I googled and found something called PDF Gear, but I have never heard of it and am wary of downloading things I never heard of from the web.

I’m looking for free because this is not something I expect he will need to do often.

  6. Thanks for your thoughts. They have been helpful.

Son booked a local company that coordinates movers. Two guys will be showing up to load the U-Haul that son has reserved. Son will drive the truck. They will have all their stuff with them when they arrive. Dh, other son, dil, my two daughters, myself will all be nearby to help with unloading. Seems better than waiting for it for 3 weeks while he starts his fellowship.

Unless they have valuable furniture pieces, it may be cheaper and easier to sell all the big stuff and buy new things when they get where they are going. Then they can rent a truck for the boxes and smaller stuff.

Yes, we have told them this and fortunately are getting rid of a lot of things. The most valuable piece of furniture is probably the curve-front desk that my husband made for him. So, they don’t have a ton of stuff. So maybe a Penske or UHaul is the way to go.

  8. My son and his wife are moving from Florida to PA at the end of this month. They have been living in a one bedroom apartment. Not a huge amount of stuff. The movers they hired told him yesterday that they will pick his stuff up on June 28 and they will arrive in PA anywhere between July 7 and July 22. That’s a huge window. So annoying. At first I told him to push back on that, but now I’m assuming this is normal and there isn’t much he can do about it.

He is leaving a residency, and so are all his friends he made down there. So nobody to help him load a U-haul. His wife is tiny. She’s willing to do work but I can’t picture the two of them getting the Lazy Boy chair down the steps. They are getting rid of lots of stuff so they don’t have as much to move. No sofa or kitchen table or bed to move. But still.

Anyone ever been in this kind of situation? Should he hire random guys to just help load a U-haul? Sounds shady. We were going tobpay for the moving company. He has to work right up until the day of the move, so we wanted to make things easier for them Now I’m not sure if this is complicating things.

  9. I’ve liked Vampire Weekend for a while but I’ll admit I’ve never paid attention to the lyrics. I’m definitely pro-Oxford comma. The two spaces after a period that my dh does drives me nuts though. It really labels anyone that uses it as an old-timer. But that’s not why I dislike it. I think I dislike it because it throws off the spacing now more than it did when we all used typewriters.

  10. They found a second one. Got it out. Sounds like they were on for several hours.

We have tweezers and tick kit at our house but they had none.

    Thanks for all your suggestions!

  11. Aagh! How could I have not thought of dental floss!! I panicked. They are on their way to the store to get tweezers!

(I panicked cuz when I asked if it was engorged, I heard his wife say, “oh that’s a big tick!”)

  12. If possible, get limited-access type housing where you access your apartment through a hallway. Strangers can’t walk up to your front door. Security gate. The more security measures the better.

Parking garage attached to the building (not across the street) is the best if you can get it.

When our oldest went many states away for the first time, we had him get a 2 bedroom so we could visit often. We supplemented his rent so we would have a place to stay. We did visit quite often.

  13. I’m a dentist. I use regular Crest. The most important ingredient in any toothpaste is the fluoride. So if you want to spend more money for more foaminess or a certain flavor, go for it. As long as it has fluoride.

We have mountains of evidence that fluoride is safe at the levels in toothpaste. Hydroxyapatite is probably good, but I’m waiting for more studies. Plus, fluorapatite is stronger than hydroxyapatite so I don’t think it will ultimately be BETTER than fluoride. It will just not be fluoride which some people are needlessly afraid of. (Your enamel is made of hydroxyapatite. When the enamel is remineralized with fluoride, it becomes a slightly different crystalline structure known as fluorapetite.)

Also, many sensitivity toothpastes are effective for sensitivity by blocking the pores from the dentin to the nerve.

  14. I will delete soon for privacy. But I know I always enjoy seeing pics of your formerly homeschooled kids getting married. So here is my second son and his new bride.
