  1. Once the toddler starts at home ABA therapy. Has anyone had this for their child while homeschooling the other chldren? How has it worked.
  2. Ok I regret not doing spelling everyday for 7yrs old. She forgot everything. ARGH! Looks like I will have to do spelling on Tuesdays and Thursdays for her as well as FLL. One of my 9yrs old wants to do vocab everyday now. The other only MWF. In WWE, the week one, week 2 throws me off because I feel like I can't skip any days.
  3. We have moved on to PRONOUNS for the 7yrs old. We did NOT do WWE or FLL or the 9yrs old girls. No WWE for the 7yrs old. We did not do ANY spelling today. No journal and no notebooking. No vocabulary although one of the 9yrs old requested it. I dropped geography and it is just added into their state study and social studies. We just did state study for the two nine years old and science for the three girls. Social studies for the 2nd grader. Math for all three and handwriting for the three. They recorded what they read the night before and read in between during waiting time. For writing I did have one child write a paper on photosynthesis and I will have another child write a recipe on making an edible plant cell that we made over the weekend. You think it is wrong to make the kids do more school work on the weekends? I am having the kids do a lot of the hands on activity on weekends when Dad is home..:001_smile: We made a pizza animal cell and a jello candy plant cells. I want to make a 3 D model of a virus. HOWEVER I DID ADD TWO MORE ACTIVITIES as part of their wait time activity which is GET A GRIP! (Tops Curriculum) and I had the two nine years do 2 problem solving problems out of Math Ties (Critical Thinking Press).
  4. The kid that I am working with is distracted when the other kids are not engaged in something that is work related. The child I am working with want to play with what the other kids are doing. The kids are easily distracted and I spend much of the time redirecting them.
  5. She requires so much time and attention. Her memory is gone it seems. She takes a long time getting the poems memorized. I mean A LONG time. We have done copy work, reciting line by line-one line per week. I have been working on FLL 1 with her since beginning of 1st grade and she is in second grade and she still looks at me like I am crazy when I talk to her about common and proper nouns. I have used tons of examples. Can someone else give me some ideas and helping her get down common and proper nouns and I know FLL goes over over and over and over and she still glazes over. Her attention span is like a gnat. People saw to ignore the optional activities but I think the optional activities-the kids actually like. They saw it is fun with all the drawing and such.
  6. My 7yrs old really needs it to slow down more. How have you broken your Rightstart B lessons so that the child gets a lot of repetition?
  7. Ok ....so I am doing all the writing in FLL as well as what is required in WWE1/2. Isn;t that what the books suggests? Or should I stop the dictation exercises on FLL since it says Optional? Ok I can just have them stop Journaling four days a week and just have them do it on the one day they do not do FLL and WWE. The journaling was just a composition book they write whatever they want. I don;t necessary read it or grade. I do like the idea of them doing their AWANAS/Bible first thing in the morning although I have been using that as Calendar time as my youngest still struggles with that. That way everyone knows the date and properly date their papers. :tongue_smilie: Spelling: again at this point they struggle keeping handwriting neat while remembering how to spell but yes I will go ahead and start incorporating neat handwriting/cursive with spelling. With AAS I suppose we can discard the tile building and just do the writing things on paper. For one session I have been doing the whole lesson. Now I will just have them write the phonograms to be review and their spelling words to be reviewed, skip the building with tiles and have them just write out their spelling words, phrases and sentences (no sentences for the AAS1 yet). Or do you think I should have them do their spelling words on one day and phrases and sentences another day. That would definitely slow down the speed of things.
  8. Why am I doing two pages of HWOT? The kids learned some other form at their school last year and the years before and two of them have really bad handwriting-printing. I am using HWOT cursive for the fourth graders because they did not learn to form their cursive letters properly and they said whatever the form they used at school was too confusing or hard. My aim is for them to do HWOT and get their cursive down so they can transition to all cursive writing in their other subjects. I was planning for them to finish HWOT quickly and they would no longer have handwriting as a subject. At this point they struggle using cursive with their other subjects because it requires too much for them to think about what to write and then do it in cursive. I must admit...handwriting has improved greatly since I put them through this schedule. I can finally read their writing. But you guys may be right and I will cut down handwriting to one page.
  9. HELP! What am I doing wrong? We get started 7:30-8pm now and we still end late. Can someone help me figure out what is taking so long? I have three children I am homeschooling and one 2yrs old running around. Kids take a lot of breaks entertaining him while I am working with one of the kids. Child 1 (9yrs)uses WWE3 -4times a week, FLL2- 4 times a week, Math packets(everyday) I print off about 3 pages, Spelling Power, Journal writing (everyday), Cursive 2 pages of Handwriting without Tears(everyday), Bible/Awanas(everyday), PE (everyday), Music(everyday-just listen to the songs they sing for choir-THEY LISTEN DURING LUNCH OR BREAK), Chores (everyday), State studies (twice a week), Pronto Lesson Science-same lesson for all three (twice a week), Reading 30 minutes with notebooking, For their state studies and science they take notes because for some reason they dont listen or follow when I just read to them. I also give them worksheets from superteacherworksheets and education.com to go with the pronto lessons. Also vocabulary.com twice a week. Geography-consists of one page of mapskill once a week. Child 2 (9 yrs too) uses AAS2 (4 times a week) INSTEAD OF SPELLING POWER and the same as above. Child 3 (7yrs) uses AAS1 (4 times a week) and the same as above plus reading two pages of Phonics Pathways (4 times a WEEK) and not cursive but printing and not FLL2 but FLL 1 (the old version) AND WITH WWE1 not 3. She uses Abeka 1 for Social studies rather than other siblings State history studies. She does not have vocabulary.com. She uses Right Start B for math. We have been schooling for about 6 weeks now. For Bible/Awanas they just review the verse they are going over but right now they are learning the list of the books of the Bible. On Thursday Mornings they have Homeschool Choir from 10-12pm. WE ARE HOMESCHOOLING WITH A CHARTER SCHOOL in California.
  10. Oh my goodness! My daughter would so love that. I wonder if they could produce a doll with the abacus in the belly area. My daughter would sleep with it every night. RIght now she carries her abacus around as it is for all her math problems. In terms of Right Start B.. I have a seven yrs old who will turn 8yrs in 2 months who went through K and 1st in PS with worksheets and honestly didn;t understand a thing. She could go fill out pages and pages of sums but always using her fingers. RightStart did help her finally get a lot of basic stuff she didn;t get like the two parts =whole thing. Yes it is a bit scattered all over the place... The organization thing stinks. The little bit of this or that material each day can drive a parent mad. The copying and the cutting ---yuck. The print and had it is organized yuck. WOuld be nice if it were more set up like AAS. For my daughter she has a short attention span so in many ways the variety of games per a lesson grabbed her attention helped. So as soon as she tired on some game, we moved to something else but return to it again another. It is good for me because I get bored and start to fall asleep. The curriculum keeps me on my toes. I am basically moving forwards and backwards with the curriculum because her memory is basically shot. For the math facts, I am falling back into Professor B method. This method worked with all of my older children but I swear it puts me to sleep. We will use that method now til she really get the 10;s fact firm. And then try and get all the other facts down as well. My daughters do however love to play the GO to the Dump game and Swim to Ten game over and over again. In fact they choose to do that than a lot of other things.
  11. we have this rule when we go to the library which is do not check anything out that is on TV for example Sponge Bob books or Arthur. But when we are at home they still read the darned Super Diaper Baby books when I know they can and should read higher levels. I am finding that since we started WWE I realized that there are still a lot of phrases they don;t quite get such as idioms and more complex sentences.
  12. This is such an awesome preschool science book ...love it love it.
  13. I have one child who might be mastery. Once she gets it she usually gets it. Another child needs the spiral a bit. I would introduce a concept and that concept would need to be covered for several weeks. Next day I would introduce another concept and the first stay stuff would need to be reviewed as well as the 2nd. The third day would have one or two problems of the first day as well as a new concept. The fourth day would have day1 stuff, day 2 and day 3 as well as day four . Each day I would add another concept and wrapping the older stuff around and around like that. I think it takes that child perhaps a month of a topic before I drop it completely but then again it would need to be addressed again the following review. It would be nice if they could also start applying the old concepts into the newer problems. Now what kind of curriculum is that spiral vs mastery or an intense spiral or what? Is there a spectrum of spiral curriculums? Now third child needs review review review review of concepts for everyday for months and years. Any math curriculum like that? I think even Saxon might even go too fast for her. We are using Rightstart and I have had to slow that WAY down and add in more reviews. I feel nuts having to accomodate the different needs of the children and then having to find a curriculum that may not exist and still have to use multiple resources and tweak stuff.
  14. Is it ok to discuss or tell what the writer means while reading a passage? My kids struggle just understanding some of the more advanced writing compared to the water downed info they were use to in PS. I also kind of peruse the questions ahead of time and really focus on that part while reading. Anyone else do this?
  15. I am actually pulling things from my old version of Living Learning Books. Level one Science. I think a lot of worksheets are great for the toddler/preschool stage to color and talk about. I also love to little mini snacks we can make from it. Also I think a website called First school is awesome with ideas.
  16. My son had his early intervention evaluation in early July during the whole fiasco of losing our house and me losing my mind but anyways he has been diagnosed with PDD-NOS through Regional Center. He is supposed to start ABA therapy in a two weeks-I believe it is Pivotol Response Therapy. The company is called Behavior Support Partnership and I believe they cover a lot of California--norther and southern. Five days a week for five hours a week. He also will be starting speech as well. I don;t know if it is PROMPT but I will find out tomorrow when the speech person arrives. So basically i get all these services for free and they come to my house. Instant child care for my toddler while I homeschool apparently. Meanwhile I have been called by Early Start who said we are qualified as well for their services for floor time or something or other. DUring this horrible wait for services, I have to say my son is developing. He is talking a whole lot more- I am finally hearing phrases and sentences. It isn;t consistent but they pop up here and there. Behavior is still not good. He is still pretty aggressive and has recently started biting. He gets really angry and frustrated when he cant express himself or when I cant understand him. I pulled out some Duplos that I had been hiding in the garage---toy rotation---and he actually sat and played with them today. I couldn;t believe it. He wasn;t throwing them or just get up and walk around terrorizing us during homeschool time. He does have great pretend play so I just don;t understand the PDD-NOS diagnosis.
  17. I found my old miquon math worksheet books. I don;t have the cuisenaire rods or the directions-never read them and never used the cuisenaire rods....was so baffled by them. Can the kids just use the worksheets by itself? Yes chores definitely work in this household as well as changing baby's diaper ...sending them out to play can be difficult because then the one working with me starts getting anxious and wants to go out and play. That child even starts to cry and say the work is too hard blah blah blah. Just because siblings are out playing and she is stuck inside doing work. So in a way it is better just to keep the flow of work going...... I love the Draw Write Now books.
  18. In my elementary years I struggled with math. I could not get those darned facts memorized. Fractions, decimals, percentages, algebra word problems, geometry proofs eek.... But for some darn odd reason I did well in college math-pre calculus, calculus. I aced discrete math. I loved it. Can someone explain this to me?
  19. What about using Paperbackswaps to kind of "sell" your material you cant sell/use?
  20. I am not a fan of busywork but I am need of busywork to keep those who are not working with me doing SOMETHING other than being distracting. My 2nd and 4th grader goes and plays with Duplos and Blocks in the living room which were meant for the toddler and it distracts the one working with me. Suggested busywork? What about Copywork? Anything? Has anyone had to do this-find busywork for everyone until everyone is done with schoolwork?
  21. We just covered it in Pronto science but I am thinking of doing the edible cell thing for Halloween seems so Halloweenish-yucky , disgusting.
  22. I have a daughter who seems to sigh when reading out loud....Almost as if she doesn't have enough breath or energy to make it through a sentence. She has been doing it forever. She is now 9yrs old in 4th grade. It is our 1st year homeschooling her. What is it? A tic, stress, not knowing how to breathe, her asthma what? It really disrupts her fluency and drives me crazy. When she talks she kind of sings. Like her voice goes up at the end of sentences or she prolongs a word.
  23. I remember doing Wordly Wise for about two grades or so but I had a tendency to just ignore vocabulary words as I was reading. Kind of skip over them. When I started taking tests like SAT and such I was in big trouble even though I was an avid reader. For some reason I could not give the vocabulary words a definition. I had a sense of the word (a general feel such as whether it was a positive or negative word) but not a worded definition. So I do think vocabulary is very important. On that note I don't think I could actually give my kids another workbook right now. So I am having my two fourth graders do vocabulary.com about once a week. We will see how it goes.
