my 4th grader wants to do some vocabulary
happycc replied to happycc's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I wish I had time to learn again! I wish I was in college again. Anyways, I need to go nurse baby down and get a move on finishing curriculum planning. This house is a mess too. We moved into our new place Labor Day weekend and have been consumed with homeschooling and chasing toddler around. -
such as Diary of the Wimpy Kid, and the different series like Amber Brown blah blah.... How do I go about slowly weaning them off of those books and having them read more challenging works ? I am having a huge garage sale next weekend by the way. I want to toss so many of those books out. I just don;t have the heart to do it yet because they do so enjoy them. Well at least right now. I need to start getting them books on tapes. In the past they would often fall asleep in the middle of one.

my 4th grader wants to do some vocabulary

Actually Satori, I decided to use vocabulary.com. I went ahead and signed three new email addresses for myself through yahoo for each of the kids. Now I just need to remember them all. I really liked the set up for vocabulary.com compared to the cutsey bigiqkid. I just didn;t want my kids spending all morning using her coins and playing video games. Besides the talking drove me nuts and I found the vocabulary.com is more stimulating and challenging. Let;s stay in touch in how Vocabulary.com is going for you. I might have to sign on another email for myself. It seems so fun. How are you setting up her time on it? Are you doing one round and she is done for the day. Right now I think we are going to do once a week for each kid or I would be having the kids really fighting over the computer and with Teaching Textbooks 5 coming eek. Anyways, have you ever played Race for the Word (I made the name and game up but I am sure someone else has too)? I have two dictionaries that are exactly the same and I pick a word and we keep points on who can find it the fastest. We of course read the definition etc. -
How long does it take for you to curriculum plan?
happycc replied to happycc's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We are a part of a charter school and it is our first year homeschooling. I had to order all the necessary materials such as paper, pens, pencils etc. Our family seems to go through all the school supplies in less than a year when they were in PS. We will see how it goes this year. So the first order to the charter school was mostly that. I didn;t get this until I think two days before school started maybe even after school started. Can;t remember those hotelschooling days. Anyways, curriculum has been slowly trickling in. Still don't have Story of the World and awaiting Teaching Textbooks 5 for the girls. I think I might start ordering for the following year so that at least I have all the curriculum to start planning over the summer. I just realized also that I can print off tables of content for most of the books and start plannning before getting them. Any other ideas? -

That seems to work a bit better. Although I can't individualize each kid though. Can someone please help me find one that is what I want? I also don;t dig the games. -
I am now backtracking after homeschooling for about 6 weeks and using Donna Young's planning forms, tips, techniques in planning three kids' lessons and it seems to be taking A LOT of time. Prior to that i was just kind of winging it each day and it just wasn;t working. I hoping for a better start. We tried Workbox method in the other house and it did not work. My kids did not like it. I liked it though.

I have the regular Catan and the Kids of Catan game is nothing like Catan and really no education value is what I have heard.

Are you by chance with connecting waters? So I guess just continue on with whatever I am doing or what? No learning objectives were give to me as a result of this score.

who took a scantron test through our homeschooling charter school and their reading objectives where for the 11th grade...huh? I guess they are advanced in reading. So what do I do? Where do I go from here? Funny thing is that when I read aloud to them they don't seem to remember much information when we do the narration. I can't give them high school level books to read. Sounds fishy to me.

Been living in the East Bay forever. Grew up in San Francisco and went to schools in Marin County. -
We live in California Bay Area. I have two 9 yrs old and 7yrs old (all girls) and would like them to practice writing letters to others living anywhere but the California Bay Area. One nine years old girl likes to write, journal and she likes to draw. She loves American Girl dolls. The other nine year old girl is more tomboyish, wears boys clothes, likes pretend play and likes to ride bikes. She likes Nerf Guns. My 7yrs old loves animals. She also likes to draw.

Yes I have often wondered about auditory processing issues but this child also doesn;t know left and right and still writes her letters and numbers backwards. Maybe she has both auditory and visual issues. -

I keep reading about WWS and know it is related to a writing curriculum but can;t seem to figure out what on earth it is... So what does it stand for?
-
In the Step 2 Look part of the 10 step. What does "Are there any Odd syllables?" mean? Also would the spelling activity cards be worth to purchase?

It honestly feels like it but I don't think so. I know for sure the kids do some writing and math everyday. Currently I am putting together math packets for them as the 4th graders math curriculum has not arrived yet. I think I might have to do the wwe and fll lessons separately as the twins tend to copy off each other or they speak to each other through brain waves or something like that. Alte Veste Academy-why are you doing the group subjects in the morning? Everyday is turning out to be long days. The kids ask for breaks constantly and there is basically automatic breaks anyways because of the programs requiring one to one.
