  1. We are looking at curriculum for next year, when our son will be in 7th grade. We are currently with Calvert, which is having their annual sale. Need to decide between Calvert math and paying extra for Singapore math. I am wondering if others have thoughts on pros/cons of each. If you haven't used Calvert, but know more about Singapore, can you share your experiences? DS likes math and is doing wel with the Calvert. He does the reading and likes to read through the text in order to learn new concepts. I am also wondering if anyone can tell me when algebra is introduced in each. Thanks!
  2. We have been using Memoria for our older son this year, including Latina Christiana and Famous Men of Rome. Also the puzzle supplement to LC. I read the recommendations above, but not sure what is appropriate for what years. Our daughter is 6 and we have enjoyed using First Start Reading. Any recommendations specifically for 1st grade, or 2nd? Her math is above grade level and she has a good grasp of material, except she is still in the beginning reader stage (she has a visual impairment). I am also using Five in a Row, and hope to begin SOTW with her soon.; What would pair well?
  3. Our daughter is 6 and just starting to read short words. We do have some reading curricula already. What she has been liking best is the First Start Reading books from Memoria Press. She likes the drawing component most, but also some of the copy work. And the large print size is great for her, as she doesn't see well. Yesterday I was lucky enough to find a number of "Explode the Code" books at a library sale, for $1 apiece. So of course I bought them. :) Can anyone help me understand how they work -- I know I'm missing books, but I'd like to try to fill in the gaps if possible and give it a try. I've heard good things about the program. What I have: Go for the Code: A Primer fo rthe Explode the Code Series -- Book C Explode the Code 1 1/2 Explode the Code 2 Explode the Code 3 Explode the Code 3 1/2 Explode the Code 4 Anyone know where I should start, and if there is a guide on how to use them? Thanks!
  4. Janet, how do you set Library Elf to feed into your Cozi calendar? I use both, but don't know about this feature...
  5. Ditto recommendation for Library Elf! We have used it for over a year. Can't say it solves everything...but almost. We have multiple books from different libraries, and every day it sends me a reminder of the status of all our holds, books out, etc.
  6. It's a long story, but we have had to wait until the beginning of this year in order to pull our daughter from school and begin homeschooling. We had thought to deliver our letter today, with Monday her first day of homeschool. However, we still have some paperwork outstanding (a report we are waiting to come in) and a piece of equipment to return on Monday. So it was worth it to us to take an extra couple of days. Our state does not require any notice, I did check with HSLDA. However, I am wondering if anyone else has done so and encountered any problems? We want to turn in letter mid-week, and definitely be homeschooling by next Friday. Any thoughts/suggestions? Amy
  7. Heathermomster, thank you so much for your story. Reading about others pulling midyear is helping so much. It sounds like everyone is pretty much agreeing to stay in for the evals. I will try to set my mind to it. Just wish we could have started HSing from the beginning of this year as we have curric and co-op classes all set up. Hopeful though that we will be able to start it as soon as possible. I also have written HSLDA to doubleheck on any additional requirements about pulling once year starts.
  8. Geodob, thank you for the thought about HSing sooner. That's something to think about. As far as the evals we are waiting for -- these ARE the IEEs so we are hoping they will be helpful. So, if we have the evals done, you think we will still be able to get copies of the rpts after we are HSing? I would hope, but not sure. When we pulled our son a couple of years ago we requested a copy of his file. And you know, it was 3 pieces of paper and not everything.
  9. Hi, I'm OP -- Thank you to everyone who has given their thoughts. I guess my heart is just feeling a tug to let go and stop fighting. So much more positive energy in HSing and we believe we could give her a better education and get her what she needs faster than working through the school system. We are also concerned that if we get recommendations for more services, we may not get them without a fight. Herekittykitty, these are independent evals -- private vendors outside the school system, and the district agreed to cover the expense. She already qualified for specneeds based on her physical disability. The evals are all related to her specific area of disability, which hasn't been adequately assessed by school or regular constracted service provider (which has been the real gatekeeper in keeping her from needed services). If anyone has more thoughts, or warm fuzzies--please add them. Did others pull out specifically b/c of lack of services, or mixed reasons?
  10. I don't think so in our state, and we are not even sure that they won't fight if we don't also wait until we have the actual reports in hand. We are having a rough time. But if we pull, they are not required to do ANY evals of any kind or provide ANY services.
  11. Please excuse the cross-post, I also posted to general board. We have homeschooled our son for a couple of years, and plan to homeschool our daughter who is going to start 1st grade. However, we have been working the past year to get independent evaluations related to her special needs. It's a long story, but if she remained in school, the evaluators would be able to come out in September and we think may be able to turn around reports within a month. The school has agreed to pay for the evaIs it a lot harder to pull after a month or two? Has anyone done this, and how has it worked? Am torn -- know it is easier to HS pulling before a school year starts, and another transition -- not good. BUT...it would be very helpful to get evaluations and we have been requesting these for about a year and a half. She has an IEP, which is also in process of revision now. We would be pulling in part b/c of our desire to HS, but also b/c she is not getting needed services through the school or her current providers. The other part of this is that we already have curriculum and co-op registration in place for her, so I would have to hold that temporarily if she started school year. She has also been asking to homeschool and is quite determined. Any thoughts? provenance

  14. Help! I have an iPhone and over Christmas we got an iPad. I did the original setup, and the other day got a message that my free 5GB memory for iCloud backup is almost full. So...I took a look, followed instructions, and deleted back-up from certain apps so it would take less memory. All well and good, right? Wrong! I got the message that it was still almost full. So, I decided to delete the current back-up (the button for doing this was front and center). Done, good, it said I now had 5GB total and 5GB used. But then when I plugged in iPad and went to do back-up, it said NO! can't do as space is almost full. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong, and how to correct? I also took another look at the helpful instructions in the original "your space is almost full" iCloud email, but this just muddied the water further, nothing seemed to apply. If anyone could help I would so much appreciate it! Amy
  15. Please excuse me for cross posting, I haven't had any replies on other thread. We are beginning a study of Greek and Roman mythology. We are reading d'Audelaire's Greek Mythology, but I thought it would be fun to support it with some fun mythology learning/game apps. Can anyone suggest apps for the iPad or iPhone that help with learning and remembering mythology details? Just for fun. Our son is in 5th grade. Thanks!

  17. Thank you, thank you thewaka! I did what you suggested and was able to download from the iCloud (I think that's what I did anyway). Many thanks for the help. Amy
  18. I have an iPhone with a number of educational apps for both kids. I just got an iPad, and have heard that if you have two devices you pay once for the apps and they can be accessed from both devices. I did go into settings and allow iCloud backup, and my calendar (Cozi) automatically appeared on the iPad. But not any of the old apps! Can anyone help me figure out what to do differently? Thank you so much! Amy
  19. Oooh, just saw the tutorial posted above. Thank you for posting this, it really shows the whole process. Only difference is we used smaller lengths (smaller hands in our group) and wood balls from a woodworking store. Amy
  20. I second making them yourself! Didn't get a chance to check out the above poster's link. But we are lucky enough to have a wonderful HS mom at one of our local libraries who runs a wool/fiber group for kids. Her children are older now, but she has a wonderful Waldorf-like approach. Over the past 6 months she has had the kids doing dying, spinning, felting, weaving (on looms from hula hoops)...and they just started knitting. The kids made their needles last week. She had them cut pieces of thin dowel into 7" lengths using a hacksaw. Yes, even the young kids (my 5 year old)--teaching them safe tool use. Then they sanded and sharpened into a dull point with a pencil sharpener. They then attached balls at the end. And now they are ready to start knitting! The size is great. She also recommends starting them on a very small start to finish project first -- making small squares to use as bookmarks. Then she is going to have them move to a slightly larger square for which she has patterns for them to sew into small creatures (ladybugs, turtles, etc). We are having a great time. So...try making your needles! Amy
  21. We lead our son's Cub Scout den and want to do a meeting on whittling (to earn the whittling chip). Does anyone know where we can buy whittling supplies (like blocks of soft balsa wood)? We will ask the boys to bring pocket knives but any other suggestions on how to get started would be much welcome. I am thinking just to look up simple instructions on whittling. We can also do ivory soap, but I thought the balsa wood would be good. I took a look at Michaels online and didn't see anything. Where else should I be looking? Thanks! Amy
  22. Thank you all...so glad I'm not the only one! Any suggestions on brand -- do you think I can just go to target or bjs or do think I need to ask someone at babies r us? Amy
  23. HELP! We had an Alpha Omega Elite booster seat for older kids, but my DH just moved it over to our DD's side since she had outgrown her carseat (she just turned 5). Now, we do not have anything for our DS. He is 10 but thin build -- about 54-55" and maybe 67 pounds. I KNOW we don't legally need a booster for him per our state laws, but I also understand a booster seat is still recommended for all kids up to 4'9" tall. The seat belts just don't fit properly yet at this size. Any recommendations? We liked the Alpha Omega Elite (it was 5 point up to about 60 pounds) but he was starting to outgrow it. I want to go out and get one tonight. Maybe Babies-r-us, Kids-r-us or Target? So if anyone has a recommendation for type/model and also where to get I would much appreciate. Thanks! Amy
