  1. The apps from New York Hall of Science are free at the moment (Choreo Graph, Fraction Mash, Volumize, Size Wise, and Playground Physics). I haven't used them, but they have been on my watch list forever after I read about them in an article about math, science and technology. They look like they are good for exploring concepts, but not really an app that you would just hand your child to play. Maybe upper elementary to middle?
  2. DS is interested in stop motion animation, and looking for an app. He has an Android. He looked around and came up with PicPac Stop Motion & TimeLapse. Any other suggestions? I just said let's take a look at what's out there, perhaps someone has comments/suggestions for apps that might be helpful.
  3. This summer seems to be all about Prodigy. My DS7 is all about that game this summer. In previous years, he's loved: Stack the States/Countries, DragonBox (algebra and geometry), Presidents vs. Aliens (a nice one for this election year), ChessKid, and ReflexMath (for multiplication and division fact fluency). Desperately trying to find a good middle/high school level science game/app. Anybody out there know of one? Or a history game/app. Dish on your family faves!
  4. My boys love math games and apps. Here are some of our current favorites. Apps: Math evolve Dragon box Anything by the Monkey Math people Actual games: UNO (good for # recognition and planning) A game where I write numbers in the bottom of each spot in an egg carton, put in two marbles and the add up the numbers the marbles land on. As you can see, we need more non-screen suggestions
  5. Hi There, I'm looking for apps that are actually going through a "Sequence" to teach 1st grade to a child with Autism. He reads at least on a 2nd grade level. I want to use the iPad for him. Any help? Splash Math and IXL is what I was thinking about for Math. Anyone? :) Thanks
  6. Hi there My youngest son is special needs and almost 11. He's finally able to remember most sounds of the alphabet and is interested in reading. Now that we're at lesson 34, he's really struggling. Has anyone found any specific apps that really help with OPGTR? I'm really trying not to panic, but I feel like I'm running out of time with him.
  7. Anyone have a good recommendation for an app to track periods? I've tried a few, but only the free ones which always seem to mess up on me or have tons of ads.
  8. Part of today's free apps Wolfram Alpha Calculator Pro The muscular system manual Elsevier Oxford advanced learners dictionary Plenty of games too like Tetris, Quell, Angry Birds Space, Cogs ETA: Free app page with list here http://www.amazon.com/b?node=10076151011
  9. FYI DragonBox Algebra 5+ for $2.99 DragonBox Algebra 12+ for $4.99 DragonBox Elements for $2.99
  10. We just got a kindle fire. What are your favorite educational apps (or productivity apps!) for the kindle?
  11. Dd knows a fair amount of Python, but is no expert. How big of a leap is it to learn objective C with the "objective" (ha, ha) of developing an iphone app? (We don't own any Apple computers at home, so we want to scope out this project before investing in a new computer that we really don't need...except for producing iphone apps.)
  12. My son downloaded Pizza! From the App Store a few nights ago and it has been a big hit. http://motionmathgames.com/motion-math-pizza/ I thought I would share it on here since so many are always looking for recommendations. The game starts out very basic but gets more difficult fairly quickly. It would be good for 7 to 11 year olds I would think, although I will admit that I have enjoyed playing it too.
  13. I just discovered this game app for my new tablet (Samsung Galaxy) and I'm in love. It's a beautifully done puzzle type game called The Room. Reminds me of Riven or Myst, only on a smaller scale (it all takes place in one room with a series of boxes). Graphics are lovely and puzzles are fun without being super hard. The story-line is a bit silly. I could definitely do without that part. I guess the developers felt it was necessary, but I don't think so. I don't think I needed it to solve any of the puzzles. I just finished the first game and am doing the (free) Epilogue. I'll probably buy Room 2 when I'm done. Thought I'd let others, who enjoy these types of games, know about it. It is Christmas break after all. :D edited to add: I should mention that it did give me some grief with freezing up my tablet. I just had to reboot. It didn't happen all the time, but enough to be annoying.
  14. We are ordering our first iPad (an iPad 4) later this week. I am excited to have one. Now, though, I need recommendations for cases to protect it from my children! What are your favorite cases? Also, what are apps that you use regularly or ones that you like for your kids? Thanks!
  15. Thanks icelatte for mentioning in another thread that these are on sale right now. They are usually $5 each, but right now they are $1 each (until 4/29). I have been eying these for about a year now and they are pretty neat. I thought someone else might be happy to know they are on sale. I just bought Birds, Insects, Reptiles/Amphibians, Mammals, Trees, and Wildflowers for $6 total.
  16. Hi! I'm in the market for a thesaurus ipad app. There are a bunch of free ones and some with low costs. Are there any specific ones that your kids actually use?
  17. My 4 year old daughter is in speech therapy for expressive and receptive delay. She is not making very good progress. I have been searching online for a great app to use when we are "out and about" with her to make wise use of the time. She has issues with prepositions, proper use of he or she as well as processing speed when asked questions. ***PLEASE do not tell me how simple this is to remediate. My child has a learning issue where these things do not come easy to her no matter HOW MANY times I review with her. She has a significant developmental delay. I am just trying to reach her and teach her in as many ways as possible. **** BTW, we are in therapy for Occupational and Physical therapy. Thanks, Courtney

  19. We are beginning a study of Greek and Roman mythology. We are reading d'Audelaire's Greek Mythology, but I thought it would be fun to support it with some fun mythology learning/game apps. Can anyone suggest apps for the iPad or iPhone that help with learning and remembering mythology details? Our son is in 5th grade. Thanks!
  20. Don't know if anyone has posted about this before or not. I just found out about the IEW Writing Tools app and we have all downloaded it. Both Dc now have it on their ipods and readily available at their fingertips instead of having to dig out their writing binders. It's got lists of ly words, sentence openers, templates for each unit, etc. Excellent tool! It's for iPhones/pads/pods and androids. http://www.excellenc...es-and-androids I'm probably way late on this and everyone already knows about it, but thought i'd share, just in case.
  21. I have an iPhone with a number of educational apps for both kids. I just got an iPad, and have heard that if you have two devices you pay once for the apps and they can be accessed from both devices. I did go into settings and allow iCloud backup, and my calendar (Cozi) automatically appeared on the iPad. But not any of the old apps! Can anyone help me figure out what to do differently? Thank you so much! Amy
  22. I'll start. My absolute favorite that is played every single day here is Teach Me Toddler. My 2 year old is on it in the car on my phone or Ipad daily. He knows all of his shapes and will point out octagons in real life. He has also learned all of his colors and points them out. We have used the older versions of the same app with similar results. My 5 year old and 5 year old like Teach Me Kindergarten and Teach Me 2nd Grade respectively. I have a few others we like really well, but these are #1 for now.
  23. I just got a free IPAD to use for the year :hurray: I am wondering what your favorite apps are for kindergarten age. Thanks!
  24. For anyone who can use this.....search Everyday Math. There are 5 of them free today and they are by McGraw~Hill.
  25. I tried to search the forums but couldn't find what I was looking for, specifically. We are getting an ipad for the family for x-mas and I would like to incorporate it into our homeschooling curriculum. I'm envisioning being able to focus on one while while the other works on the ipad. I am looking for suggestions for the best apps. Free ones are great, of course, but not necessary if it is a good one. I have an almost 9 year old son and a 5.5 year old daughter. For my 9 year old, I'd like an app or two to reinforce his math and spelling (i.e. not teach him these things but let him practice them in a fun way). I'd also like a geography app and any cool science apps (I have The Elements and SkyWalk in my wish list already.) Logic and mind-puzzles would be good too. For my 5 year old, I'd like basic, introductory math (i.e. simple addition, numbers greater than 10, etc.) and phonics or early reading apps. And, again, logic or mind-puzzles. Any suggestions for us? Any other "must have" apps for kids and family? Thanks very much! Heather
