  1. Help! I have an iPhone and over Christmas we got an iPad. I did the original setup, and the other day got a message that my free 5GB memory for iCloud backup is almost full. So...I took a look, followed instructions, and deleted back-up from certain apps so it would take less memory. All well and good, right? Wrong! I got the message that it was still almost full. So, I decided to delete the current back-up (the button for doing this was front and center). Done, good, it said I now had 5GB total and 5GB used. But then when I plugged in iPad and went to do back-up, it said NO! can't do as space is almost full. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong, and how to correct? I also took another look at the helpful instructions in the original "your space is almost full" iCloud email, but this just muddied the water further, nothing seemed to apply. If anyone could help I would so much appreciate it! Amy
  2. ETA: To save everyone from having to read my long diatribes, please skip to page 2 of this thread where you will find the links to the solution in posts #12, #13 and #14. We just updated our iPads to iOS 5. We decided to use the new iCloud feature to try to wean ourselves off iTunes. But we are starting to see some odd behavior. For instance, DS13 has just noticed that MY bookmarks from Safari are now on HIS iPad. So perhaps I am misunderstanding how iCloud is supposed to work. Is this thing going to force every iPad on our account to be THE SAME? I hope not, since that would be completely moronic! :glare: I was expecting it to be like iTunes, but without the cord. I guess I'm hoping that was just a minor bug. Is anyone else using iCloud? If so, what are your experiences with it?
  3. Right now we have two iPads: DS13 has one and I have one which is shared with the youngest four children. DS13 is pretty responsible with his, but I currently have the following restrictions in place: - I have put a restriction code on his iPad that he does not know (I hope) and I have In-App Purchases set to Off. This restriction is also on my iPad. I am pretty much opposed to those with very rare exceptions. So far I do not think we have made any such purchases. - I also restrict content to PG13 (or equivalent) for Music, Movies, TV and Apps. Maybe lower. - DS13 knows my AppleID and password so that he is able to do updates and download free games if he likes. So far all has gone well. I'm glad I have In-App Purchases turned off on my iPad, since it seems clear that one of my children would be purchasing Fish Bucks right-and-left without the restriction. But we are getting more iPads for Christmas. This will change things quite a bit, since the younger children will not be sharing their iPad with me anymore. And I *really* do not want to do all the maintenance and updates on their iPads. OTOH, I also do NOT want to give them my AppleID and password (except for DS12). The aforementioned child (not DS12) would likely drain our retirement savings if I did that! :glare: I think I will give DS12 the same level of freedom as DS13, but I'm trying to decide what restrictions to put on the younger three children. Here is what I am thinking right now: - Lock out Safari and YouTube. - Disallow changes to Location and Accounts. - Restrict content to PG13 (or equivalent) for Music, Movies, TV and Apps. Maybe lower. - Lock out Game Center. So my questions are these: - Is it possible to create a restriction that would allow them to *only* purchase FREE applications or books? I'm thinking this can be accomplished by allowing them to only get apps, movies and books from my iTunes installation by transferring them to their computers over the network and then syncing them to their iPads? I don't think that requires any password, but perhaps I am missing somthing? - Are there any restrictions I can place on books? Some of the books out there are pretty bad. (I guess if I avoid giving out the AppleID and password that will not be not an issue...) - Is there any way to effectively limit screen time? I do not want these to completely destroy MomsintheGarden's school environment. Currently it is only a minor issue since they have to share the one device. But I expect that will change after Christmas. Before the novelty wears off, I expect there may be some issues. Perhaps we could have them all stack their iPads together in a common location until school is done for the day? - Have you made other restrictions for your younger (below 12) children that you find effective? If so, please share that. - I know these iPads can be incorporated into their schooling since I have seen quite a few threads about that. That said, I will say that MomsintheGarden is pretty adamant about limiting the use of computers for school. I'm not about to oppose that, since I'm very pleased with how things are going. Still, I am wondering if there are areas in which you have found the iPad to be *indispensable* in your homeschool? If so, please let us know what those are and how it works. For instance, we have all the old classics on the iPads. Do you find they can read successfully on the iPad, or do they simply get distracted by all the other stuff they can do? Perhaps there is an excellent language program or something you use for drilling on multiplication tables that has no equal? Or maybe you find having the children work with PDFs on the iPad is much more convenient somehow than using paper, please share that. Any other thoughts on this subject? TIA!
  4. OK, weeks ago I updated SillyAutismMan's iPad 2 to the new operating system and then added the Cloud thing. Every time I go into settings on his iPad and click Cloud it shows me a scrolling "Still Verifying" at the top of the page and tells me to check my email. I have NEVER gotten a verifying email! They do have the correct email address for me, too. Anyone else get lost in the cloud vapor like this??? I have emailed Apple about it. Haven't the foggiest what is going on (hahaha cloud, foggy, get it?)
  5. Last evening I was downloading some free ebooks from Amazon and I noticed that one of the books took a LONG time to download. Then I noticed that our internet "bucket" (we have limited download ability) had been drained considerably. So I went back to the Amazon page for the ebook and I found the following: and For a BOOK!! Well, it turns out this book is enhanced with both audio and video. It really looks quite interesting. But it is much bigger than I ever imagined an ebook could possibly be! Seeing the size of this ebook made me think of recent discussions which have occurred here about how much storage to get on an iPad, with a common answer being "Get the max!". I always advise that because of the size of movies (1 to 2 GB each) or the size of apps (some are 500 MB or more). I never expected it to be due to the amount of space the ebooks would consume! So then I started thinking about Amazon's new Kindle Fire, which comes with only 8 GB of storage, some of which I assume is used by the Android OS. This device, like the new iOS 5 for Apple devices, purports to handle the storage of some content in the "cloud", thus eliminating the need for large on-board storage. I can see this making some sense for movies. Since you can only watch one part at a time, you can stream a movie if you can connect to the internet. But what about a 500 MB app or a 170 MB ebook? What does Amazon expect you to do with such content? Granted, I am discussing an iOS app, but the ebook is for Kindle. Do I need to wait for 15 or 30 minutes each time I want to access a book this size? I certainly won't be storing many ebooks and apps this size on the Kindle Fire. Perhaps they will develop the concept of "streaming" an ebook? In the end, I must conclude that BOTH large on-board storage AND cloud storage are necessary to manage such large content. The iPad has that today. I suspect Kindle Fire may need to add more storage in future versions.
  6. OK - So If I get this right - one "benefit" of this is that everything will sync between all my devices. BUT - we have 2 iPads and I have a macbook pro. I don't want to sync all devices! My laptop is mine and my email not for my kids. I don't want my iPad syncing with my kids iPad. . . So, I for one am not upgrading the 2 iPads we have here for security/privacy. . . reasons since my kids use one iPad. I say - I will leave well enough alone. Or am I missing something. . . Barb
  7. I have had an iPad for a few weeks and an android phone using google contacts for several months. When I set up the iPad I linked it with gmail and my email & calendar show up but not my contacts. I was holding off until after I updated to the iCloud to see if it fixed it before asking questions but I did that yesterday and still no luck. In settings I have contacts set to sync but it doesn't happen. Anyone else have this issue or know how to fix it? I've tried googling but so far haven't found anything that works.
