  1. Yes, this is sort of what I mean. Just another way to have that accountability factor. I do use actual curriculum for every subject, not just worksheets. The thing is we go down so many rabbit trails that sometimes I feel we struggle getting back on course. The rabbit trails are a great way to learn too, I just need a schedule to help me stay the course (I think - maybe I'd hate that.)
  2. Yes, I have tried workboxes. It isn't so much that she won't do the work, although sometimes that is the issue. The problem that I have is knowing if I completed "a year worth of work". You know, like in math, if we finish the book, then I know we did. But I am adding in grammar, latin, etc. So then I don't know if I getting enough done. Does that make sense? Yes, more planning on my part is needed too, I am know realizing. Thanks.
  3. Okay, I am in year 2 of hsing. My middle dd needs much more hand holding (language issues, vision - but getting there, slowly). My older one is 9 and on the accelerated side (also, stubborn, independent, argumentative, etc). I have just pieced together different curriculum for both kids based on their needs. The problem is, I don't feel like I am getting it done with my older. She complains and moans so much. I feel like maybe curriculum in the box is what she needs. What I mean by this is where I say, see this, it has to get done by the end of the year. Maybe it is just me not taking the time to plan better. Just something more laid out where SHE sees what has to be done every day. I hope this makes sense. I have steered away from "box curriculum" because I liked to individualize it more to her level, etc. Thanks for reading it this far. Ugh. I sure hope this makes sense. I have been the one asking for a "self learner curriculum", and recently about MBtP. Thanks again.
  4. I am having fun looking around for new ideas for different curriculum. I have been looking at Moving Beyond the Page and that looks pretty cool. Any ideas? Thoughts?
  5. So I am learning that my 9 y/o dd is wanting more and more to be a self learner - yay (I think). I of course won't cut her loose at this age, but, I am wondering what curriculum out there lends itself to more of an independent/self learner? We are doing SOTW 2 this year, so we will do SOTW 3 this fall. Everything else is flexible. Actually, she loves history so much, she would probably love another one too. Thanks for any thoughts. Let me add, that I am encouraged that she is wanting to be more independent as my younger dd is struggling still academically, and needs more of my help (not to mention my little guy too).
  6. Thanks so far girls, any others want to chime in? What about curricula that is out there that is better for an independent learner? (Aside from what has been mentioned already) :)
  7. Give it to me, the good, the bad, the ugly...did you like it? Was it worth it? DD audiologist mentioned this as "the big guns" compared to earobics. DD is still struggling with phonetic awareness, and has been working with an OG trained SLP for awhile now. This was brought up again as something we should possibly consider. Any advice? Thanks.
  8. My 9 year old is basically describing her best hs day of being one where I just give her the work for the day, and she goes off and does it herself. She is an accelerated kiddo, and loves to read ( I posted this on the accelerated board too). What curriculum would you do for this type of kiddo? How would you do this? Have you done this? She would probably do great with project based homeschooling too. Thanks.
  9. My oldest is 9. She is accelerated in most areas, but especially reading. She is taking 3 classes with Athena's this semester, which she likes. The problem is, I don't feel like I am getting enough done the with the rest of her curriculum. Today we talked about her "attitude", etc. I asked her to tell me what her best day would look like. She basically described a self learner to a tee. She said she just wants me to give her work, and she will go learn it herself. Hmmmm... how would you do this? Thanks
  10. Yep, she fits the definition of a right brain learner to a tee! We are doing much better in math since we started Math on the Level. She actually begs for math. Huge difference. Although I am moving around finding her strengths/weaknesses and going from there...I see her needing something to help her really "get it". We did Miquon math, but she got "bored" with it. I have been looking at Math By Hand, and am really liking all the fun manipulatives she has. We play a lot of games, any new great games out there I don't know about yet? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  11. Thanks all!! You are making me crack up! The funny thing I realized, is she is soooo disordered with so much in her life (clean clothes laying all around her floor, because why put them away?), but her dolls that she reads to - they are all in a certain order. Just last night I needed to vacuum the dining room and move some of her dolls around (like 20 of them), and she was like, "no, they are all in a certain order". OMG.
  12. Just google LindaMood Bell and you will see it. I had purchased it and found some results with it but stopped because my dd SLP was not as familiar with it as her other program. It really is a great program, and is very in depth.
  13. Here is the link: http://www.mathbyhand.com/ My 7 year old dd (second grader) is doing okay in math. She likes math now that we switched to Math on the Level. That made a HUGE difference. She has confidence now and actually asks to do math. I still find myself gazing over at Math by Hand though. This dd is a very hands on right brain kind of kiddo. She uses the number line for everything, and I know that is okay. I just thought by now that 2-1 would be well, sort of easy. I keep thinking that maybe that would be the bonus of what we need to kind of help solidify some concepts, or something. What do you all think? By the way, how come I can't hit enter anymore to make a new paragraph? Everytime I do, it just stays at the same spot? Great for the eyes, huh? Thanks.
  14. I just love her blog!! I bought Marie's Words after seeing those reviewed on her blog. (I know you are watching - keep up the great blog!) I only wish someday I can have a fun blog like hers with lots of great ideas.
  15. Anyone have any great ideas on this? I don't know if it makes a difference if the kiddo is gifted or not, maybe it does, maybe it doesn't? Any fun thoughts? Workbooks? Thanks.
  16. My oldest is 9, and is a bright little girl. But OMG, the biggest slob, and it is getting worse. Literally, I know when she was doing her hair in the bathroom because she will leave every drawer open that she needed. Clothes? All over the place. Anyone else? There is some other things going on too, but this is the biggest.Thanks.
  17. What are some of your favorite cd's for math? Like skip counting or anything? Thanks.
  18. My oldest is a theater junkie. She is in her third play right now. She memorized every play she does, even the scripts greater than 100 pages. Any curriculum out there or ideas on how to help her education through plays/scripts? She is in 2 musical theater classes right now. She has checked out all of the readers theater books from our library system three times now. Any thoughts?
  19. Hi all, me again. So, my little bug is making some nice progress in speech. The SLP is finding some "holes" that need to be filled. We are starting to finally see some improvement in my dd ability to "hear" a blend, therefore someday, read a blend. One thing that we are noticing is even though she tested okay on her auditory memory, it seems like this is somewhat of an issue. Any thoughts on what we I can do to improve this? One thing to note is that my dd is a very kinesthetic learner, and unfortunately when working with this SLP, it tends to be more at a table/chair. Don't know if that is effecting anything. Thanks.
  20. I am in year 2 here of hsing. OhE has helped me more than you can believe. I think I am going to print off the OP post of hers and tuck it in a safe place so I can reread it whenever I need to. So many people, including family and friends, just don't get it. It helps to here it from someone who does! Thanks OP for posting this and thanks again OhE for saying it!
  21. We just started reading this for our next read aloud. Before I get too far into it, does anyone have any fun resources to go along with it? Thanks.
  22. So, my 7 year old finished her 9 month vision therapy in October. We were to continue with some tracking exercises, lifesavers and concentric circles. We did okay with it for awhile, but you can guess how it went. We didn't do it as often as we shoud have. Then in the last month I have noticed a drop in her piano playing ability/reading sheet music. I was happy to see her reading ability take off. She went from books with just one or two sentences per page, then to books with 4-5 sentences per page. I then noticed her skipping words, etc. I took her back to her optometrist, and sure enough, some areas she continued to improve on, but the one with testing her tracking, bad. She has intermittent bilateral strabissmus, with one eye worse than the other. If I throw a ball for her to catch, watching her eyes is enough to make me puke! So glad I used my mother's gut instinct and took her back. So, we are back to brushing up and doing her exercises, daily!!
  23. So my girls are becoming musical theater junkies. My older one is working on her third performance. They just watched The Music Man and loved it. What other musicals come to mind that 9 & 7 year old girls might like? Thanks.
  24. My 9 year old is a strong/accelerated reader, however...she would love to keep reading "twaddle". Ugh. Okay, it isn't all twaddle. She does still love her Geronimo Stilton, and that's okay. It is easy for her and she has fun reading something easy. She does love nonfiction though too and history. She has woke up on days and asked to read the Bible or even the Ancient History Encyclopedia. So yes, more than twaddle, but still she prefers twaddle. Can you all give me some books that your daughters just loved around this age? Thanks.
