  1.

You can still self study or do a course without approved syllabus - you just cannot call the class "AP whatever" on the transcript.

You can call it "Whatever with AP exam" though.

ETA: For college credit, only the exam score counts.

I am soooo over my head here  ........so, you can take the AP exam and it can count for college but written differently on the transcipts?

I am not even going to ask what is the difference between "AP Whatever" and "Whatever with AP exam."  :crying:

  2. Hello, I have 2 questions......

Is it essential for a student to take a AP course to do the AP exam?  Or can he take, for example, a Chemistry course and study for an AP exam?

Also, if he takes an AP Lit & Comp in 10th Grade, should he take a specific literature course in 9th Grade to prepare for the AP Lit & Comp for 10 grade???

    TIA

  3. I love to hear what others are doing.  Maybe I will be inspired instead of being a "deer in the headlights" thinking I am on the homestretch of homeschooling with my "one and ONLY" kid AND I do not want to deal with it.

Biology - with Kolbe Academy Online ( adding some astrobiology to make it an Honors course.)

Ancient History - WTM way (might our source to Co-op)

Literature - Ancient Great Books- WTM way (might out source to Co-op)

Has anybody used Novare's Earth Science text? I am looking at it on the website and really think my younger kid will like it - much simpler than Tarbuck text

Yes, same here.  I bought the Novare Science for Earth and I like it better than Tarbuck for the exact same reason as you!

I am actually going to use both books, depending on the subject. I am a geologist, so I am alittle particular. The Christian content is not in the science part.  You can easily skip (Chap. 1) or disregard a section here or there.  It is OE.  Chapter 11 is a great explanation of why we have OE and YE and how it came about.  It is section.  You don't like it you can skip it the section.  It doesn't mix the science with scripture like Apologia.

I highly recommend it and if you want the answers to the text questions, plus lab ideas, quizes and tests, get the CD!  It also has a suggested schedule.

Oh, I forgot to add, it has some math problems regarding earth science.  I like how it mixed some simple math into the curriculum.  This my ds really needs to see how science will mix math into the curriculum in the middle school years.

  5. Hi,

I am looking for something to thoroughly teach about maps- from long/lat, contour maps, scale, GPS etc. to creating their own maps.  I do not want a workbook.  I am looking for it to be just a bunch of hands on activities, like taking a topo map and creating a 2-D map of a mountain to drawing a 3-D mountain.

I am thinking, regarding timeline, anywhere from a couple of weeks worth of fun activities to only maybe a semester course.

    Any body have any ideas?

  6. We used My Homeschool Math Class (Jann in TX) for Alg 1.  My ds LOVES her and her teaching methods.  He hated math but tolerates it now.

He is signed up for Geometry.  She knows how to cater to all learning styles, including visual learners, which is my son. She is very helpful with all her students.  She is enthusiastic about math and she is always available for tutoring sessions, if your child needs help.  She answers all the kids questions in e-mails in a timely manner.

  7. My ds in Grade 6 used "A Tour of the Subatomic Zoo: A Guide to Particle Physics" https://www.amazon.com/Tour-Subatomic-Zoo-Particle-Physics/dp/1563966174?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0

Totally accessible for middle school and high school.

We used Alice in Quantumland to supplement.  It was very good!  My son loved the book.

Then my ds wanted some these particle zoo characters from here http://www.particlezoo.net/shop.html

  8. First RegGuheert, what is that delicious looking pizza that keeps popping up in my face while reading these threads?

Thank you all for a warm welcome and it was such fun!  Thanks for taking the time to put this together ladies.  I cannot wait for the next one.

Thank you Creekland for the squash.  Sounds like you have a nice garden growing!  Beets!  I love beets.  I'm glad you will live close by so you can supplement my garden ...... when we finally grow one again.  We want to grow fruit trees.

I would like the recipe for the corn dip, too!
