  1. Quill - this happened to me and my bridal shower, many moons ago!  I had invited everyone at my work.  We were living in Chicago and the wedding was in Philly.  My friend at work gave me a bridal shower in Chicago.  The day after the bridal shower, I received a gift in the mail.  Since it was from my Chicago co-worker, I thought it was a bridal gift and I sent a a thank you card for the gift.

The co-worker received the thank you note and said to me "Wow, your thank you cards for wedding presents was done more quickly than  we did for our wedding!"  I knew this person was not coming to the wedding so I thought it would be a shower gift from them.  I was not expecting a wedding present from them since they were invited to the bridal shower.

Anyway, again, no big deal but I guess it happens. :)

  3. Hey Quill - (((((HUGS)))))))

Check out Franklin Marshall in Lancaster, PA.  In lieu of SATs scores, you can submit 2 writing samples.  How cool is that?

Then there is Penn State at York, PA and York College but I cannot remember details for them.  I know there was another PA college that also said "University recognizes that SAT/ACT are not indicative of students ability and SAT?ACT are not needed."  One I think was St. John's College in Annapolis and I can't remember the PA one.  I looked at so many colleges/Universities in PA they are starting to get jumbled in my head!

  4. I like your idea of having your son go to a school and take the test with strangers.......This sounds very helpful.  I have a son that is nervous about going into  a school and taking a test.

Now I want to do the same thing :)

I would think the same as posters mentioned above, that they will see a 9/10th score and compare it to a 11/12 grade score.  My question would be do the Universities average the ACT Test Scores?

"They (the Universities) actually look at all the courses your son is taking from 9th Grade and on to see how the kids improve all through High School and how hard the courses are.

  5. Yes, this is very revelant discussion for US, too.  I spent yesterday looking at all different colleges and Universities to get some idea how to plan out the high school years.

I noticed that Princeton U. had the nicest and welcoming page for homeschoolers.  Anyway, Princeton is the only Ivy League school that I looked closely at for homeschoolers because they had a nice detailed page for them.  They recommend a detailed portfolio with detailed course descriptions and optional book list to go with the textbooks listed.  They also mentioned on the general admission site to do as many honors/advance type courses as possible during the high school years.

So, even if I put down "Honors" on the transcript, I will have to back it with a course description page of why honors.  In PA, there was an Homeschoolers Association, I forget the name, that said if you want to include honors on the transcript, you will have to back it up with a course that either used a College textbook in the homeschool or took a Duel Enrollment class or did additional work to constituted as college level work.

Anyway, I will go with the honors designation with detailed course description to go along with it when I do my son's transcript.

  6. How does that work?  Did the teacher record themselves for lecture and then the kids do the assignment?

So I was looking at the lesson plan for one of the lessons on the website and it lists 15 things to do for Lesson 1.  Here is the list.

    3. Complete Assignment #1: Do the Math Your Turn p. 321

    4. Complete Assignment #2: CAFE Standards

    5. Complete Assignment #3: Caldwell Power Plant

    6. Complete Assignment #4: Coal

    7. Complete Assignment #5: Oil and Natural Gas

    8. Complete Assignment #6: Fracking Part 1

    9. Complete Assignment #7: Fracking Part 2

    10. Complete Assignment #8: Tar Sands

    11. Complete Assignment #9: Nuclear Energy: Chernobyl

    12. Complete Assignment #10: Nuclear Energy: Population Density and Plate Tectonics

    13. Complete Assignment #11: Do the Math Your Turn p. 336

    14. Complete Reading Quiz Ch. 12 p. 314-339

    15. Participate in Forum 1: Preparing for the AP Exam p. 339-340

Is that for one week?  Are these just reading and answering questions?

  7.

To answer this, you don't have to do anything specific before taking the class (unless you are enrolled in a specific course that assigns summer homework). It helps to be a strong reader & writer going into the AP class. (I've read that AP Lit is usually a 12th grade course in public schools & AP English Comp is usually an 11th grade course. Some online providers require the students be a certain grade or age to take their specific class.)

Thank you-------I have a a gifted writer and he loves to read great literature and talk about it.....but I did not know that AP Lit and Comp were seperate tests.  For some reason I thought they were one test......Yet, again, I am soooo misunderstanding what I am reading here.......
