Hear it from SWB herself

It doesn't matter what level you do for each, but the pp is correct. Just start at FLL2 next year. We started formal grammar with my 2nd and 3rd grader at FLL3 with no problem! They are very gentle and don't require previous knowledge. WWE is different as you are building skill.
-
I had that happen yesterday. I just waited and my post had actually gone through!
-
They did all of AAS and then all of the R&S series through 8th grade? We did AAS through mid 5 and switched to R&S 4, 5 and 6. We are still working one book a year to finish. I'm thinking if you did all of the levels of both, perhaps it was too fast?

What about Tablet Class pre algebra?
-
My two,are 2 years apart and 1 year apart in school. No problems combining for us. For 2nd and 3rd we did fll3 (their first intro to any grammar) no problem. Next year they did R&S4 together with no problems. This year I wanted to go half pace since grammar continually repeats itself with just a bit more complexity each year. We are doing hake 6 at half pace, but both kids want to go back to R&S next year so we will do level 6.
The key IMO is that grammar repeats itself with a little more complexity each year. So don't sweat it too much :) -
have you looked at logic of english? They teach rules with games. R&S does teach rules as it goes along, but it isn't as cut and dry as the way rules are taught in AAS

Thank you Mrs. Twain! I think we will try the videos for next year.
-
Thank you for the reminder about the required vs. optional lessons :)
-
I do have the TM! I stubbornly think I should do all of the lessons LOL. I will definitely consider that next year for level 6. Did I you use the videos for level 6? Thanks

I haven't seen Supercharged Science and can't comment on it.
With my older kids, I have completed BFSU volume 1 and half of volume 2.
Volume 1 went very well for us, and the experiments/demonstrations were excellent. They were simple and clever, and they usually only required basic supplies which I actually did have around the house. I made up copywork for each lesson which summed up the basic science principles. My kids copied these, drew pictures illustrating the principles, and filed them into their science notebooks. All of this required work on my part, though not too much. I enjoyed it because the program is well crafted.
Volume 2 was more difficult to teach (even though I was a science major), and it became a slog. My kids said they hated science and were bored with the whole subject. Dh was displeased with our science at that point because of the kids' attitudes, and in the end we switched to BJU online science. Both kids are now doing BJU Science 6 (since we had covered most everything through BJU Grade 5) and thoroughly enjoy it, especially the experiments. I bought all of the supplies for the experiements, and all I do is get out the necessary items and let the kids do it themselves. After watching the experiement on the video, they can conduct it by themselves without any help from me. I am feeling quite relieved that I don't have the stress of trying to teach BFSU volume 2.
All that to say--
BFSU is a high quality science program if you can get it done well. However, if it is not getting done well, then it would be better for you to switch to something else that will get done well.
Same here! Science degree too lol. We did bju science 5 this year and enjoyed it. We didn't use the videos but next year I'm considering it. I'm concerned about time. How much time do you spend on science per day/week? Do you use the activity book? I use it because it helps my kids synthesize what they are learning. -
I'm not looking forward to it either :(
We love BJU science 5 and science 6 will be similar but more lessons to complete in the year. I'm considering the online version with teacher instruction but that will add another 30 minutes to our day and I just don't see how we can get everything done each day.
I will be starting DS on WWS and doing some WWE3 exercises with DD before moving her on to WWS later in the year. Not looking forward to this (being torn in two different directions). We took a writing bunnytrail which was awesome this year, but now we need to do this as I value the skills learned.
As much as we enjoyed this year, and as much as they have learned and experienced, I'm currently focusing on what I had planned that we did not do this year. How can I expect to add even more to next year and think we can do it? :crying:
-
Also how much time per day do you spend on AAS? Keep it to 20 min.., don't push too far or you both will get burnt out
-
I think since you already did aas1 you should do at least 2 and 3. The direct instruction of syllabication and other rules is extremely useful! We now use R&S, but the first few AAS levels are extremely valuable.
Level one of AAS is boring, but levels 2 and 3 are really really meaty and useful -
Well I just ordered the Plague! project for my two to do at the end of this year. This type of thing is pretty foreign to them but I saw it last year and wished I could use it during their middle ages study this year. This updated version for homeschool looks do-able for us! It looks like they suggest 3 weeks so I can do some shuffling to free up 3 weeks at the end of the school year and just after we hit that time period in History! Looks like a good opportunity to stretch my students.
I'm still not excited about next year though!
-
I'm not Mandy, but I am going to venture a guess that she's referring to this book.
I knew they had a classroom version but didn't know they now have HS version!
-
Wah Im not feeling real excited.
This year turned out neat because the kids took a writing class and used the skills to write about NZ before we went in February for a 3 week tour of the north island. Because we were going to Hobbiton, we read the Hobbit and have continued into TLOTR. It has been an adventure to research, experience, read and report about what we got to see.
Every year I fail with foreign language. Tried BIg book of Lively Latin but got overwhelmed with the chants. Switched back to GSWSpanish but dropped it when I got overwhelmed.
Next year I want to try WWS with ds and am afraid it will be a battle. I think it will be good for him, however.
-
Logic of English might be a good fit
-
Correct, she scrapped the project.
This year we are using Hake 6 at half pace and find it boring. We will be going back to Rod and Staff which my kids prefer. -
We listen to many of them in the car! Peter Pan, Narnia series, little house, black beauty (loved!), railway children, etc

I'm having a really, really hard time deciding on history. I want to use TOG but just not sure it will work for us. I have searched highschool threads trying to figure out what people use in highschool for history and haven't really come up with much. My gut tells me to go to MFW but so many people make it sound like it doesn't work for upper grades (like 5-8). I can see the literature is lighter and good for my upcoming 4th grader. But, maybe the book basket has enough for her.
Anyways, here is the start of my plans.
Grammar: R&S6
Spelling: R&S6
Writing: WWS 1
Math: MM6, some Life of Fred Fractions/Decimals
Latin: Finish GSWL and ___________
Spanish: Start GSWS
Logic: ____________necessary already?
Literature: ?? If not TOG, I don't know what people use/recommend.
History: TOG? SOTW? MOH? MFW? Yikes!!!
Science: Apologia or AIG. Not sure if Anatomy or Botany yet.
Health: Something. CA requires it....
PE: She does soccer, dance, etc.
Art/Music: ??
I really like MOH. You can always add literature for the time period by looking at tog, sonlight MFW for ideas. I add in mapping and the put timeline summary entries into the ipad timeline app they have. If we have time and energy, we may do a project or homeschool in the woods paper craft. At the very least, it gives a nice walk through history.

My kids really like 5th grade science this year. I only used the print materials to save money and time. I am considering adding the videos for 6th next year.
-
I am just starting to think about it!
Grammar R&S 6 ( was doing hake 6 half pace so would be doing second half but they prefer R&S)
Spelling R&S 7
Vocab -Caesar's English (was planning to do it during 5th sigh)
Math - MM6 and 7 (goal)
Science - BJU science 6 - liked 5 with just books but am considering videos for 6th
History - MOH vol 3
Writing - WWS1
Reading - ?
Logic ?
Foreign Language ?
-

Do you bicycle? Madison has great bike paths. Devils Lake is beautiful. I'm personally not a fan of House on the Rock. Look into it further to see if it is your cup of tea. Americas players theatre is awesome.
