  1. I haven't used SWS but having a poor experience with GWG and www, and seeing samples, there is NO comparison!

AAS teaches the "bones" of words (phonograms) and how to use them to build words. It also teaches spelling rules which allows the child to apply to multiple words.

I used the first 5 levels of AAS and then moved to rod and staff. Rod and staff does word study (particularly in the older grades). Spelling words and how to spell various sounds is covered. There is a fair amount of religious/Christian words FYI). This is inexpensive and more independent. I don't regret spending all of that time and money on all about spelling.

Logic of English is another new one similar to AAS but incorporates grammar and handwriting. It is pricey up front but you don't have to keep buying more and more.

  2. Ruth this is awesome! Thank you for taking the time to share your research on this topic.

To OP, my kids will be using BJU science 5 this year. Years 5 and 6 have a brief exercise about PQ3R. The chapters are pretty easy to outline. There are also teacher questions in the TM to test comprehension. There is also the activity guide which asks questions about the text.

I will be working with my kids on learning from a textbook. Ruth's explanation sounds like what our goal will be. This year, I want to teach my kids to interact with the text book and next year, we will put pen to paper with explicit note taking/ outlining.

  3. The sky is the limit at his age! I think you are asking whether to start at ancients or medieval. It is up to you! I started homeschooling in 2nd and 3rd so we did a year of US history and then the next year started to do ancients. I particularly wanted to do ancients to study biblical history. I plan to do two full cycles, slowing down when we hit important US history places.

You could do that or spend a year on countries and cultures, etc.

  4. With regards to Lot, nowhere in Scripture do I see where he was asked by God to sacrifice his daughters. I think he did that to save his own skin. The only "righteous" thing I can see he did was to hear the word of the Lord spoken by the angels and he believed it. 2 Peter says Lot was distressed by the sin he saw but nowhere are his actions that night called righteous. Being righteous doesn't mean a person is morally perfect. (King David, anyone? that has been a hard one for me!) But that is the whole message of Christianity. You don't have to be perfect, you can't be perfect. What you can be is presented to the Father as perfect because of the work of the Son. We are made righteous through the work of another. That same message is also what is so offensive. We humans all think we are wonderful. Well, at least we are better than the neighbor. Heck, we're even morally superior to God.

Agreed.  The Bible wasn't teaching that what Lot did (offering his daughters) was righteous.  The world is full of sin, corruption, and men being evil.  Only God is righteous.  (FTR, it really isn't worth arguing that point with someone who is against God).

  5. I have no experience with kindergarten so I won't offer advice.

First off, I think you need to relax. This is coming from someone who gets really worked up, so I do understand!

Regarding your 8 year old, it is time to make some changes. I am working with this on my 11 year old because I realized that he manipulates me with his whining and attitude. At the same time, I realized I was pushing him with material which was just too difficult. And another time, he really needed me to support him through an overwhelming exercise since his confidence had lowered after the previous exercise. I would talk to your dd about her attitude and what you expect of her. I would monitor whether her attitude is laziness or frustration or simply a habit. From there, you can adjust when over her head, and push when she is being lazy or habitually complaining. Work on the attitude and tell her which behaviors will not work with you.

    Hang in there mama

  6. I'd like to hear what you love about it. I read so much about the difficulty level of WWS1 that I really didn't want to start ds on it this year. He is an 11 year old 5th grader though and after poring over numerous writing programs, I've decided that WWS (while challenging) will build skills he needs to learn. After reading through the sample, I also realized that the incremental practice is just what he will need to build these skills. I plan to start the year out with some wwe3 for a couple of months and then we will begin with WWS realizing that he won't finish until some time next year.
