I'm looking for a Spanish curriculum that is effective. Is it really possible to learn a language through computer study?? What would you recommend to teach a 9 year old how to speak Spanish?

Doing Apologia Elementary Anatomy-question on workbooks
Karie posted a topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I will have a 4th and 6th grader this fall. I am going to do the Exploring Creation with Anatomy book. If you've started this WITH the accompanying notebook, could you tell me how it's going? Are you actually using most of it? I found with the free sheets for some of the other Exploring Creation books, I did a lot of picking and choosing. If you think this is helpful to the course (or not) would you please let me know and give me your opinions on this particular journal. Thanks! -
Jen, thanks for offering me your schedule. I just sent you a message with my email. Karie

I've had my kids together for history from the beginning. This coming fall, my oldest will be in 6th grade and my youngest in 4th. My 6th grader wants to do History Odyssey so he can "do it by himself". That's fine with me, but I want my 4th grader to do SOTW, and of course, these 2 programs don't line up too well. We'll be doing Middle Ages this year. So, for the first time, I think I will split them up. Do any of you split up your kids like this? How has it worked for you? I tried to go through SOTW and HO and correlate them, but it doesn't work too well!!

Literary Lessons from Lord of the Rings 2nd edition
Karie replied to Capt_Uhura's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
So, does this mean the 1st edition is better?? Just for future reference. -
I have this for my 6th grader that we will be starting in the fall. I'm done some of the "best" books, and I think those books might actually be a little harder...hmmm.. Anyways, as I'm trying to figure out how to do this, I was looking at the schedule, and it seems to me that they schedule a TON of time to read these books. For example, I think they give 7-8 weeks just to read Tom Sawyer. I know my son can do it in much less time than this. Are many of you tweaking this for that reason? I'm wondering if we'll get this done much sooner than I thought. Maybe I'll have to do another "Best" book. What have you done with this?

Does RightStart A-E really teach all the math needed for Algebra?
Karie replied to SophiaH's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I did RS all the way through twice, and I'd do it again. Regarding skipping a few things, I skipped most of the geometry drawing in E because both my kids just couldn't do it by themselves. I found myself having to hold all the drawing tools because they weren't adept at it enough to do it by themselves. I felt that it wasn't important at this age and I believe I made the right call.- 54 replies

So I guess I shouldn't get so upset if I have a mouse in the garage....not after reading these stories. Ugh!

Does RightStart A-E really teach all the math needed for Algebra?
Karie replied to SophiaH's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We used RS B-E (A was too slow, B covered everything in A, so we went with B), and both of my sons finished E in 3rd grade. Older son did Singapore 5 and 6, with Intensive practice and Challenging Word problems for 4th and 5th. My answer is NO, RS A-E is not enough to start algebra. I'm in weird situation because I now have a 6th grader who is ready for algebra. My plan is to do Foerster's algebra slowly over 1 1/2 years with the CD's. I think he'll be okay, though-if not, I'll figure that out this coming fall. He's doing LOF pre algebra right now and breezing through it. Secondly, I took Algebra in 8th grade. I remember breezing through 7th grade math and being bored with it, so it is possible to start algebra in 8th grade (and this was 29 years ago). So even back in 1981, kids were taking algebra in 8th grade.- 54 replies

Thanks! These will work perfectly!!

Pathetic, huh? :glare: I'm not too creative in coming up with ideas for my 3rd grader to write a paragraph. I know in the past, I've seen some great ideas for paragraph topics, but can't seem to find them right now. We are running low on ideas and I need some fresh ideas. If you have a website that lists various ideas for writing prompts, i'd appreciate it. Karie

I'm curious about buying furniture on Craigslist...there has been so much talk about bedbugs now, aren't people afraid of getting bedding, couches, etc. with bugs in them? -
S/O Strangest Name You Ever Heard:
Karie replied to MariannNOVA's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My uncle and Grandpa are both named Wonderful-they are the 6th and 7th generation to have that name. My uncle swore that the name Wonderful would stop with him and he'd NEVER name is son that. Thankfully, he had 3 girls!! Also, my neighbors have 2 kids- a girl named Liberty and a boy named Justice. I also went to school with a girl named London Bridge. -
What other math program goes well with SM?
Karie replied to plain jane's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We did SM just by itself. If you do just the workbook, you aren't getting everything out of Singapore that you can get. I used SM Intensive practice and SM Challenging word Problems with the workbooks and it provided a full,well-rounded year. We didn't need to do anything else. I did add in Life of Fred on Fridays just for fun-because both of my boys like the adventures of Fred :-) -
If you have more than one child doing the same core, do you get 2 of the same book? That seems expensive, too. I think it would be hard to share books.
-
No, I was looking on the website. I called it American history, but it really is world history. Core 100 seems like it might be more difficult?? Is 100 just American history, then? I'd like to use SOTW with Sonlight, which I think is just 6 and 7, correct?
-
There is NO way I can afford 2 cores to do simultaneously. I don't know how you guys do it!! I was looking at core 7 for american history. I will have a 7th and 5th grader the following year if I decide to go down this path. I also looked at core 4, but it's too easy for my older son. How would I combine a 5th and 7th grader in Core 7? Would it be too difficult for my 5th grader?

Regarding using MUS Algebra, I've never used MUS. Does it require manipulatives? What specific books do you need to do this for the year? Teacher book, tests, student book?
