  1. I'm finding that my children aren't ready for more than an hour or so of work until they are around 8. I would do one line of Handwriting at a time. Then you can do one later after another subject. 20 minutes of Math is plenty per day unless she asks for more. I would set a timer and when it's off then close the book and move on. You can always crack the book open later in the day if she decides she wants more. Next year you can add 10 minutes to that time and the next another 10 minutes. Do some of the work orally. Mix it up. Some days science is first and some days it's third OR make one day a Science only day. Write from your text or do copywork. Do as much as you can just from your science. Do experiments (get a kit if you don't have anything with your choices). Print out some experiment sheets and that can be her writing for the day. I think she is way too young for that much work unless she is really wanting it. I just wouldn't push it with her.
  2. Probably catch up on Math UNLESS my oldest does well on his tests at the end of the year. Then I might just let him skip ahead and get started for the upcoming year. We will continue to read a lot of books but a lot more child lead. We do a lot outside since we live in Washington State. We love summer so we spend a lot of time at the beach, camping, nature walking, Museums etc. We usually end up lighting a lot of "fires" for the upcoming year.
  3. I've been going for a couple of years, but my dh and I had flexible schedules. I'm taking a break for now because my dh business is really doing well enough to allow it. It's been hard at times and I'm really happy to have a break again. I plan to go back when they are a bit older OR I can afford some household help and then I'll do an evening program to finish my BA. My MLIS (Master in Library and Information Science Degree) is available in a distance form if I want to choose that route. It's possible with help, cooperations, and good organization. We qualified for quite a bit of aid to make it possible.
  4. One year my Grandpa painted a egg shaped rock and we were all done for. I wish I had gotten that rock when my Grandma moved. I'm so thrilled so many different people have this tradition. It was so very fun for me growing up!!!
  5. No dairy that means no yoghurt, no whey, no casien. If that doesn't work no wheat, no gluten... Dark eye circles are a big sign for either of those. Dairy is much easier than wheat.
  6. We are only using Dangerous Devotions right now. We have used the Greenleaf Guide to Old Testament History before, but they were a bit too young. I really like the Greenleaf and would like to try it again once we are done with Dangerous Devotions. I'm looking forward to hearing some more though. I'm trying to figure out how to include some more studies into our week.
  7. Yes our program has a lending library and we can check out Singapore for free. We can, also, copy it for free. So, I tried to get my boys to switch over. I love the look of it, but it just doesn't appeal to them at all. They like watching the DVD. I just reuse the books by copying. They only do a lesson until they master it and then move on. So, we've been able to use all the books. My youngest will start on MUS next year.
  8. I wanted to add that we aren't from anywhere near Baltimore! My Grandma is from Connecticut originally though. But, I'm not sure if it comes from her family or my Grandpa's. I think it's originally Eastern European though.
  9. We do it. It's from my side of the family. I grew up doing it at my Grandparents house every Easter. We are doing our eggs tomorrow. On Sunday we will head over to my parents house and have egg fights! My Grandma lives there now (my Grandfather passed away) and it's her favorite holiday. I introduce egg fights to people whenever we can.
  10. I love road trips, too. I think planning it out before hand is nice. Do some research, check out google maps, do a state by state check of really neat festivals, farmers markets, outdoor markets, pack well. Camp some and occasionally stay at a hotel so you can feel clean and take a good shower. We really want to do some kind of train trip this summer. We were thinking of taking one from Seattle to Portland. It's not far but my boys are younger and they really want to go on a train.
  11. I like the Goethe books site. I took a quarter of German recently. But, I've decided to take a break (yet again) from my University Career to focus on homeschooling. It was just getting to be too much. Once you have the basics down I think it shouldn't be too hard. Pronounciation and grammar are important though. I'm thinking I might get Rosetta Stone version 3 for homeschoolers this next year. I just wish I could see it first. I wasn't sure if I would like German or not. But, I'm so happy I gave it a try. I love it and my children are picking it up quite nicely. Finding resources is what I'm finding difficult. I would love some Sesamestrasse and such for the boys. But, I wish I could just check it out at the library.
