  1. First of all, you have all the power in the world. It's your child. There are things you can do, but given to what sounds like the negative attitude of the teacher, I'd pull her out. If your goal is to homeschool, why not now?

The silence that this teacher is imposing on your daughter can have lasting effects. It is teaching her that silence is better than asking for help, that no answer is the best answer. Picture your daughter five or six years from now in the same type of classroom.

Besides, this is kindergarten. There should be some type of joy before high stakes testing sets in!

  2. We had a friend that recently went through this. Stepmom and step-grandmother didn't like him. They treated him pretty badly. Mom took ex to mediation, and visitation was changed to contact with father only. No more contact with stepmom or gramdmother, or visitation would be terminated.

I agree to reaching out to them as a couple, and you have to advocate for your son. He's only 7.

  3. I never had that thought, not once. It was my dh that took the most convincing. He was worried about being held accountable, using the right textbooks, etc. He has since mellowed out, especially since he started seeing how ds stacked up against some of the kids he coaches at the same grade level.

To keep it in perspective, I teach in public school. 38+ students, all with the same learning objective and outcomes, not all on the same ability level. You get the opportunity every single day to see measurable results with your own children, whether you realize it or not. Multiply the 38 by 5, and that is what most teachers are working with today. Ask yourself: How much would your child grow every day by sitting in that classroom? Do you want them to grow at the rate of everyone else, or at the rate they were meant to succeed at?

  4. Like the above poster, all of our dc are six years apart. Eldest son was in 1st grade when ds #2 was born; our dd came along 6 years later.

Our children are very close, but their relationship has changed over the years. When our oldest left for school, the two younger ones became even closer.

The age span has given us time to focus on each one individually without having to choose between them, like one's game or another's performance, etc.

  5. I realize that we are very lucky to still have quality libraries given the current economic situation. I was just taken aback when my check out fees were $10.00... We have had to cut back on how much we check out now, which is disappointing for dd because she loves the dvds and audio books.

  6. How much does your particular library charge for cds, dvds, holds, etc.?

Our local library charges $2.00 for the cds and dvds, plus a $2.00 a day late fee. These can only be checked out for 7 days, non-renewable. If we want to put a hold on an item, it is $1.00. If we don't pick up in a timely manner, there is a re-shelving fee.

  7. Thanks for all the responses. I love the concept of the mental math. We will be starting with the 2 series. We will continue on and finish CLE 3; there wasn't a problem with this set. Dd enjoys working through the units. My concern is that her ps is so focused on the testing results that they are only teaching the concepts that appear most frequently.

  8. Garage sales have been the best place for me to find resources, especially the books recommended by WTM. Last summer I picked up an entire Egyptian/Ancient Greece/Rome collection (20+ books) from a family that was done with their 6th grade research project for ps.

I agree with starting collections: poetry, drama, etc. Make a list and carry it with you. You never know when you'll run across something good.

Also, remember that 2nd semester is ending soon. College students, and schools in general will be looking to unload their books for cheap. I purchased a lot of the Dover thrift editions of classics at a college bookstore for 50 cents each.

Building a library takes time...be patient. Scour thrift stores, garage sales, library sales, etc.

  9. If you have been following the California budget, it's not a surprise. Another tactic to force voters for the tax increase. If you can't afford to pay the professors, you can't offer classes. That leaves fewer spots available for students. Our community college system is SoCal is overcrowded and underfunded, as well.

The public schools face an enormous loss of funds in the next fiscal year. If you do not work for a district that had the foresight to prepare, you might be pink slipped. One of our local districts has cut all of the school counseling positions. Everything is being cut in our area, except sports. MANY schools will be offering online academies in the future to cut down on teaching costs.

  10. Watched it, loved it...

Interesting to see how much they alter the storyline for season 3. In response to the graphic nature of upcoming jail scenes, I think back to season 1. The one scene between Lori and Shane was quite graphic.

I hope Hershel isn't written out too soon. He and Rick have had some great scenes together.
