  1. I think the concern should be focused on why students who graduate from such highly ranked schools cannot pass the entry level placement tests and are put into remedial writing and reading courses.

If you recall the opening of WTM, she discusses how her class struggled with how to write a paper (loved the one about not enough material to discuss Ancient Mariner). We have to question what is more important: standards or skills. If students are not mastering basic skills, then whether the standards have been taught or not is pointless. Every October my co-teacher and I are besieged by students wanting help with the common app personal statements, and then again for their senior projects. "How do I start, What do I write, What is a narrative account?"

It's very sobering to look and see where your students stack up when it comes to college readiness. You cannot fix in one year what was neglected for eight or nine years.

  2. The things we despise or find fault with in others are usually the things that we despise in ourselves. You were an open target, in my opinion, and maybe those things may have made her feel better, but left you with some very raw wounds.

Move on...real friends love and respect us for what we are. You are obviously a very caring person.

  3. It could have something to do with the state standards, and teacher is trying to incorporate as many as possible into one assignment.

Although it does seem overwhelming, it sounds like your dd has more than enough background and support to get it done. You could make this the focus of afterschooling for the next few weeks.

For info on block quotes, etc., I strongly suggest the Purdue OWL site. It has just about everything you need.

    Good Luck!

  4. Pulled ds out of middle school in late March. There was never a phone call, nothing. As long as we had returned the textbooks there was not a problem. It may have helped that our umbrella sent for his records.

You don't have to justify why you're pulling dc out. It's really no one's business but your own. If you walk in, wave your hands, make a scene, however, it would probably raise a red flag. It's best just to be low key.

  5. It's a very tragic story for all involved. There are more girl fights at my school than boys, and almost always over a boy. I hate to say it, but its more common than you think. It's a sad testament to our time. Someone asked about girls this age liking boys...just turn on any of the tv shows and the content is pretty objectionable. Do we even have a true G rating anymore?

  6. Our school has an abundant number of fails due to students not dressing out. Parents have to sign the class syllabus stating that they have reviewed the policy with their child. But, we have late start on Fridays and students are given an opportunity to make grades up by doing a PE activity in the morning before classes.

Our district has a strict policy about shoes and the gym floor surface. Tennis shoes/soft jazz dance shoes only for the safety of the student. If the floor is to be used for another activity, such as a rally, it is covered in paper to protect the surface.

Also, PE does not count for academic gpa for our school. Valedictorian is based solely upon academic gpa, not extracurricular courses.

It's hard to say that a lesson has to be learned by dd here, because the penalty is so severe. Grades matter to her. I'd strongly suggest scheduling a meeting with the teacher and let dd talk to her. If the teacher is interested in student achievement rather than rigid rules, it should be something that can be resolved.
