1) that is a good point. We just started it this year. I thought since he was a really good reader that it would be fine. My husband agreed we should go back a grade. 2)I'll look into those writing books. We are looking into having him tested for dysgraphia. 3)We just talked today and not that I have ever told him he needed to be done with school before lunch he feels like he has too before he has free time. Hmmm . . . We never set a time limit on school, except for certain times that I have set in place for family table time, or speed drills.

We are looking into having him tested. We have IEW but it's too teacher intensive for me with all the other kids. It really is to mind boggling for me.

I guess I want to make sure that he has reading comprehension. He can tell me all about books that he has read but if I haven't read them I don't know for sure if he has gotten the main point from the book and relayed it to me correctly.

I think it is just getting the ideas down on paper that bogs him down. He doesn't really care about the grammar stuff when he is writing. He remembers the grammar sometimes. I did notice that he seems to do better on a white board today with his punctuation and grammar mechanics then when he writes in a book with a pencil. Hmmm . . . . Yes he can type and when I tell him he can answer the questions on the computer he loves it. He does better on the computer then in writing for sure. But is it because the computer highlights mis spellings or improper sentences? I don't know.

SO we are a few weeks into our school work. It all started out good until about yesterday. :sad: So soon??? Our first child, a son who just turned 13, is 7th grader this year and has always hated writing. It was always a struggle and not knowing really what I was doing I decided to just let it slide and not make him write that much. We started out homeschooling so we have had him from the beginning. We was a rather a slow learner and so he was always in tears a lot when he felt like he was doing to much. I finally learned to back off and school started to get better. He became a fluent reader at 10. And CANNOT put books down. Yesterday, during our meeting time that I have with each of my schooling children, I was reviewing his school work with him. I was looking at his reading and it appears he is still struggling with writing even one full sentence. If he does, then it usually doesn't start with a capital or end with punctuation. He knows this, we've learned these basics since grade 1. He can tell me the answer fine but when it comes to writing things out, he can't. He hates it. He thinks it is too much. I myself don't think that it is to much at all. Here is a picture of what he is doing during the day. Maybe I am asking him to write to much? Math finishing grade 6 in T.T. and almost on grade 7 (started grade 6 in Jan. after struggling with another math) Fix it grammar (the second one) he hates grammar but seems to like this one the most, but still struggels in getting a lot wrong Getty-Dubay cursive italic copywork. Just one - two lines a day if it is done neatly. He doesn't have the best of penmanship. EiW 7th grade - Just started it this year. We are doing the grammar at the beginning just to help since I feel he is behind. He hates how he has to re write the sentences. But this is writing, isn't he supposed to write them? I don't get it. CLE Reading 7 - First year using this as well. It is bit of a stretch for him. He loves the reading part but hates all the questions. I don't know what to do about this. He's really good at reading and can tell me a lot about what he reads about even when he doesn't have to. But he is struggling with how long it is taking and I think that he is just really rushing through things to get it done. So his answers are one word, or a small sentence with no punctuation or capitals, or he didn't grasp what they were really talking about. AAS - almost finished with level 3. Struggled with spelling. Another subject that he was just in tears over growing up until last year. He is grasping things so much better now with this then when we tried it in 2nd grade. Hallelujah. Apologia Science - General Science including the student book. He loves science but once again hates the writing. He told me all about what he was learning but when he went to write it down, before he told me, it was all in one sentence. UGH!!! History we do all together and he reads a book on what we are studying and then writes a dictation 2 times a week on the computer. He seems to do really well on the computer but my husband and I think that he can't do everything on it. He has to write with his hand. Doesn't he? Then for fun he does programming, which he loves Language - spanish and then spends a lot of time on our small farm outside with animals or creating things. All he wants is to be done with school so he can do what he wants outside or read. He doesn't do all of these everyday. We only work 4 days a week. Math, copywork, fix it and writing he does every day. Science 3 days a week, and everything else 2 times a week. We were really wanting to be mostly done with school work by lunch time. That is our best time. We have 6 kids. 13 down to a just turned 1 year old. I poured my heart out to my husband this morning and to God. I am at a loss. Am I doing something wrong? Is there something that I should be doing more of or less of? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Sorry this is so long. Thanks for reading! Thanks, Jennie

All is really good food for thought. I really like many things about each one. UGH! Why do they need to make things so complicated. I need to sit down and write out the pros and cons to each one and see what I get. :confused:

Thanks K, I will look at that. I have been constantly going back to MOH through out this past school year and LOVE what I see and read about it. I will look into the schedules. I really just want to purchase the book and see what else I need to go with it for our family. I know the kids would love the audio as well. So it is just piecing it all together now is the big problem. I had a feeling, which I told hubby about a few months back, that I am most likely going to be using MOH. But I always get pulled somewhere else or another great idea gets thrown into the picture. The more I am with MOH, the more I can see us using it and am loving it. Thanks for your input. So I have been going back and forth between MOH and BP and I think that if I use BP that I would also use the MOH spine with it. I love what I see about MOH. My question is, why should I consider using BP with MOH instead of just using all or most of the MOH materials? I love their materials too from what I can see of them, but I love how BP has everything laid out for you already. What is the difference between the two? Are there pros or cons to either? Thanks!

I love Apologia and have wanted to do it with my children and finally I am able to start it since I am leaving a Curriculum to venture out on my own. YAY!

We used to live 5 minutes from our church. Then we moved 35 minutes away and that made a huge difference in how often we were going to events at the church during the week. So for our family it has made a huge difference and we are currently looking for something closer to our home.

Good ideas. I never really thought about putting it in the washer. I would scrub them but it wouldn't always do the trick. I'll have to try that this week.

I would start taking or up Vitamin D and start taking Kudzu powder. You can dissolve it in warm apple juice for the kids and it tastes great but is also an big immune system builder.

I totally agree. The school bus comes down our country road at 7:15 every morning when my children are just rolling out of bed. And they go to bed at 8:00 every night. I am so thankful to have my children home where they can get enough sleep and where I don't have to be a drill sergeant every morning to them.

HI K, I am right there with you girl. I have been praying over this the past two weeks and finally talked through all of my thinking with Dave last night and it fit exactly what the "do the next thing" is all about. I so want that. I LOVE HOD and what it offers but I'm starting to get frazzled with getting behind and the fact that my kids are not sitting around the table or all on the couch with me reading our Bibles together and learning about Science and History together. We have done our own thing the past 1.5 weeks and Ethan is LOVING being together and there is a sparkle in his eye again that I haven't seen in a long time with school. I have no clue what we are going to do yet but I have some ideas at least for science. I'm praying for your health and that your sweet blessings are all doing well. We've missed you lately.

My son 9 started vision therapy when he was 8. He finally was able to tell us that he couldn't see out of one eye. That clued us in. With both eyes open he could see great. So we took him to a normal eye Dr. and she couldn't really give us a prescription for him cause his vision was so bad, almost blind in one eye, but perfect in the other. That's why we had hadn't really noticed before. He did have a reading delay and everything your son has been doing. Hadn't really thought that his reading delay was a cause to his eyesight. After going to the vision therapy for the first screening we were made away of how bad his vision was. WOW! But after only 1 month of wearing a good prescription his eye sight already improved greatly and we were able to already change his prescription. It has only gotten better since then. Even taking a year off cause of moving and having a baby his eye sight didn't get worse again but even got better. After we started back up again recently we go about 1 time a month, and his eye sight continues to get better each time. We have even hit huge milestones in the therapy which are huge praises. A lot of patch time though but after his eyes were working together more and he got glasses that's when his reading really took off and now he can't put down books. We even have had all the children tested by the vision therapy Dr.'s cause it is hereditary. They can see into the eye and give you exact prescriptions and eye health so much better then just normal eye dr.'s. Our 16 month old had one recently and they were amazing with her. They could tell me everything about the health of her eye. So I would say it is definitely worth everything you've got to take him.

We are 7 weeks in and I am going crazy. Finally figuring out what our family needs and how I want to teach our children. We've been a full Curriculum family from the start and have wanted to step out of that but kept chickening out. So now I am trying to figure out what I want to do and starting to go crazy with all the ideas.

Thanks to all. I love hearing everyones responses about what you do. After talking it over with DH we are going to start today and tell them that they have a week to start behaving better in the car. If not then mom and dad get to choose for them. We will see how it goes. My guess is that in the end we will be choosing but maybe letting them choose where to sit will work out just fine too. :001_smile:

In your situation, I would just tell them where to sit. Because of car seats/boosters, my kids are pretty much always in the same spots. I think this is how I am leaning towards. At least for a while.
