    Thanks for the thought on the Aeneid I was going off of what VPSA Omnibus, had suggested for a completion time.  Will give that one some more thought.  I think I'll just start digging in them and just see how much we can get through.  I think I'll use the time factor suggested and just work on it a given amount of time each week and just see what happens.  There is so much discrepancy on how many major works to accomplish in a year! 

     

     

    With regards to TWTM list the great book list is meant in my understanding to include History with the Literature and therefore why the list is long.  I know it mentions not to feel you need to complete all of them I believe in her book she mentions that 8 should be the minimum and 16 would be the stellar amount.  Her book has definitately been helpful but it is nice to hear of others who have already been there as well!  That is why I wasn't sure what I should include given that he is already doing another History and am just looking for the Literature aspect of it.  I guess since we have already read the ones I listed, we can't go back but didn't want to mess up the rest of the year.  :-/

     

    Thanks for your insights!  Any other favorites or must reads besides what I have listed and of course what Lori suggested?  Don't want to omit anything of great importance!  Thanks again!

    I'm using The Rolling Acres School....we are not Catholic and therefore have just omitted the prayer part that they memorize each week.  We are in week 9 I believe, and my son seems to like it well.  He likes that it is self paced and therefore can go at his own pace.  His Latin III is online through Potters so it is pretty demanding and this worked out good for his schedule.  It is set up by weeks using the text German Made Simple.  There are quizzes and tests all done through them and set up so all I have to do is check them.  The videos are great for sound to make sure he has the accent and pronunciation down right.  With having to outsource his other classes we couldn't afford even if we wanted to another online course so the price is right at $35 a semester.  If you want to meet with the instructor one day a week and have her grade his work it bumps up to $150 a semester still not bad but we just chose the cheaper route this year.  HTH  :)

Thank you so much for your replies!!!  Lori thanks for being so detailed in answering all of my questions!  I didn't want to overload the poor child but some things just fell that way.  He is very bright and motivated wants to start taking community college courses next year in hopes of getting alot of the general ed courses before leaving high school.  He has taken many courses online through various places.  He was enrolled at VPSA but it got to be too excessive and him wanting to get all A's plus wanting to take other classes of interest was not going to happen if we stuck with their plan. 

     

    I wasn't planning on two English's but didn't know how to address that since I wanted him to have a solid writing program.  I am a big Abeka fan in regards to grammar only and wanted to make sure he was solid on all of his grammar before moving on to other things.  I guess that is why I didn't want to overload on too many books to get through with such a tough course load this year.  He wanted to start German this year even though I had told him he could start taking that after he took AP Latin next year. 

     

    Thanks for the other ideas for their ancient studies I have been sorting through those for the past year and just couldn't decide what was a happy medium?  Wanted to make sure we covered enough but how much?  I appreciate your ideas on what to include and where.  Didn't want to miss anything important...tough being my first high schooler...:) 

     

    In my notes we have already read the books listed as (read) in what he has already done this term.  So I am trying to finalize the next 24 weeks.  With the Illiad and the Odyssey was planning on watching the videos of the Teaching Company by Vandiver and was going to have him work through the Omnibus text with these.  Omnibus text with The Screwtape Letters and Aeneid.   The others planning on just reading through and discussing.  Probably will have one paper on each work since he is writing so much in his other class.  Any other thoughts?

     

    He is very involved in our youth group at church and does alot of outreach programs, missions, and camps.  He is in two bands at our church as well.  Plays in the HS worship band and is interning under the worship pastor at our church.

This high school thing ...is new to me and having difficulty making sure that I have enough covered and to determine where to include certain books.  :(  I have searched intensely on past threads so I hate to duplicate but my list isn't quite the same as everyone else.  So for 9th grade my son is taking a Biblical Archaeology class for History which is considered a one credit course along with a few other reads including:  Unwrapping the Pharaohs, Unveiling the Kings of Israel, The Archaeology Book.  However, on top of that I have this list of books we are reading along side and trying to determine whether they should be in Bible OT Survey  (1/2 or 1 credit) or under Literature (1 credit course) so here it goes...

     

    Bible reads for OT survey credit for the year:

    Genesis- Malachi

    Genesis Finding Our Roots

    Adam and His Kin

    Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers study guides

     

    Is this enough for a one credit course?

     

    Other Biblical reads:  Radical, Case for a Creator, and other self help books (too many various ones to mention)

     

    Ancient Literature and others included:

    Golden Goblet- read

    Cat of Bubastes- read

    Epic of Gilgamesh- read

    Holy War - Bunyan- read

    Codes of Hammurabi- read

    Screwtape Letters- read

    Illiad- (7 wks)  beginning

    Odyssey (4 wks)

    Last Days of Socrates (2 wks)

    Plutarch's Lives (2 wks)

    Aeneid - Virgil (3 wks)

     

    Have scheduled to complete these in 33 weeks and that leaves me with only about 4 weeks to decide on the following below or could change the ones above that we haven't read yet.

     

    Now I am debating on the next ones and trying to figure out which should be done first if we have time from the list above.  The Histories (Herodotus), Medea (Euripides), The Republic (Plato), Aristophanes (Comedies), The Gift of the Jews, or Till We Have Faces  Probably only have time for one and wanted to read it in the correct order so am needing to decide before finishing the Odyssey.

     

    Along with the Literature he is taking Grammar with Abeka 12.

     

    Other classes taking this year: 

     

    Rhetoric   (online teacher CAP said it was definitely a 1 credit course)

    Ancient Literature (see above)      enough for 1 credit

    Biblical Archaeology (see above)     1 credit

Okay, I know there are several previous lists of online classes and outsource info in the archives but it seems like the latest combined list I can find is in 2012 and alot has changed since then.  Looking to compile a list of HS or College like courses taken in HS where your kids have actually taken courses there and the class has been very challenging and engaging and worth putting on the list!  It can be self paced, free, online, whatever but the class was GREAT in your opinion.  I know this will benefit all of us....thanks for your input in advance!!!

I am struggling with this too.  My two older children both used Abeka for Pre K and K.  It does work and builds strong readers!  We never had to do anymore phonics after that and we just used Modern Curriculum Press - Spelling Workout to go over spelling rules.  I am deciding what to use with youngest next year.  I have both same as you and as tempting as OPTGR is and less time consuming to get it ready I still am having a hard time switching so I probably will stay with Abeka and might skip some of the worksheets and "busy work" but will keep with the phonics.  Tough choice I feel your pain.  Good luck in your decision!

Thanks for your thoughts!  Would like to simplify and consolidate rooms....uhh....any other ideas?  we have one bedroom that we have made the "school room" where my kids go to do computer work and then it has all of the supplies and 5 bookshelves of books there is also a table in there to spread out and do work.  I have a "den" off of the kitchen that I was thinking of changing to a playroom so we can have all of my 3yr olds toys in there since we are mostly upstairs during the day.  However, we have a HUGE open basement that I have used for gross motor and active toys...balls, climbing gyms, skee ball, b-ball, etc.  Would you all move all toys to the basement?  I'm just not sure if he would stay down there all alone when we were up here working.  Is your playroom if you have one on the main level or on another level...does your preschooler stay in there by himself?  Thanks again!

Okay....I am trying to declutter and organize again and I'm trying to decide how many toys need to be left out for play?  I have one 3yr old and my other children are older so their "toys" are in their rooms.  It has turned out that he has toys set up all over the house (by my doing).  Not sure if I should consolidate to one area or have is spaced out like I do now.  I do rotate toys but how much should be left out?  What works for your kids?  Also, do you have a set school room?  I have one for my older kids but try to keep little one out do to them trying to study with peace and quiet.....Would love to hear ideas! 

  9. We have morning time but each day varies. It is a time where I combine all of my kids. It is usually about 1 hr long. Each day we discuss their bible reading and we have one read aloud together. Then depending on day we do bible, latin, german drill, poem, shakespeare, composer studies. My son is only in 9th but we have been doing this for years so he has adjusted his schedule to get all of his other work done on his own.

  10. Derek Owens worked great for us...my son has done Harold Jacobs for Alg. I & Geometry...we have used Derekowens for Geometry and currently doing Alg 2 with him. He does the honors and he is labeled gifted and this math seems to be a good fit for him. He uses his own text he wrote for Alg 2. I have also heard Forester is pretty good. HTH

  11. States and capitals is what I had my kids learn and more on our home state in elementary. We love settera.com. It is a great downloadable Free!! program that taught my kids well where they retained it. When they were in 3rd grade we memorized the capitals through a fun song where 6 yrs later can still recite...:) It is called Capitals and States. By www.kidzup.com.

Every kid is different and I think that we should leave it at that.  I have learned through the years that all children learn at different levels and at different times.  If my son is interested in learning math concepts at 3 I am going to let him...why not?  If you need to work on a grade an extra year who cares?  That is the beauty of homeschooling!!  My oldest is labeled gifted and there are different levels even inside the label "gifted" so what works for one kid might not for another.  Even though my son is labeled gifted we continuted to do Saxon in the early years because it worked skipping levels is a big no no!  Yes he got kinda bored with it and the monotony, but hey it worked!  And now that he is in higher math I can use a different curriculum and know that his previous math was solid and therefore has the foundation for any math.  And thankfully he has done really well.  Saxon is great for some and evidently not for others but it was a good foundation for us here.  And again love the simplicity of it!!! 

  13. I have been very drawn to CM as well so we integrate it in our classical home as well.  It has been a challenge for me to try to fix our schedule to include it "all".  This is what I have done and hope this helps some. 

     

    For the "character study" after trying many things.... for my older kids I have them pick a quality that we mutually agree on that they need to work on.  They read scripture and stories to help with that paticular area and write how they plan to work on it.  For my youngest we read stories relating to different traits each week and discuss them throughout the week or when they come up.  It doesn't take that long and easy to work in.

     

    Nature Study- one day a week we go outside for about 30-45 minutes without playing and go for a walk.  We have it easy here because we live in the woods... :laugh:  And I usually pray before we go out (I need all the help I can get) that we will find something interesting.  Thankfully God has helped me in this area....it can be anything the kids find interesting anything from weather to the skies to bugs, animals, flowers, etc.  When we come in they choose what they will draw and write about in their journals  which takes about 30 min.  (we do right before lunch) While they draw and write I will usually read a living nature story during this time as well. 

     

    For one hour in the morning we do group learning this is when I incorportate everything we learn together it kinda goes like this:

     

    Monday:  Hymn study (read about composer/writer 8 scheduled for year) and learn, Bible verses and Bible (speed drill) and Bible/History reads

     

    Tuesday:  Hymn, Artist( show a pic each week and read some about the artist 3 scheduled for year), Bible verse, Latin drill, Bible/History reads

     

    Wednesday:  Composer study (read about the composer 3 scheduled for the year) then we listen to him on the way to church at night...Bible verses, German/Arabic drill, & Bible/History Reads

     

    Thursday:  Shakespeare (study 2 during the year) I space them out we listen to a tidbit about it at first, then we listen to it and eventually watch the movie, Hymn, Bible verses, Latin drill, and Bible/History reads

     

    Friday:  Poet study (read about the poet studying 3 scheduled for the year) when pick a poem to read and discuss, Hymn, Bible Verses, Grammar Drill and Bible/History reads

     

    This way I get everything in that I want to include in our schooling and doesn't take up too much time.  The trick is to do 15-20 min. at a time and even if it is only once a week it is amazing what you can get done by the end of the school year.
