  1. He has known his sounds and letters before he was 2 yrs. old.  He can read some words that he has learned on his own but when I try to introduce Abeka reading to him since that is what I used for my other two he shows no interest and walks away.  Uhh... I have heard of Miquon not familiar with it though but will look into it.  He has been playing with C-rods.  He loves to play games any kind.  Guess I'll have to get creative...:)  I think he might like Boggle Jr. looking into that for word blending.  Thanks everyone!

  2. Thanks everyone for responding....keep 'em coming.  Would love to have more to think on.  For me it is VERY hard not to start "formal" training, curriculum for math, reading, writing etc. at 4 since my other two did.  My oldest loves school so it worked great for him, my middle son hates school and I think I burnt him out too quickly since I kept the same pace as my oldest.  Don't want to make that mistake with my littlest one.  He loves to learn and read!  But he likes to do more hands on things and loves the montessori approach picking and choosing on his own and changing it up alot.  I did that when he was young to stimulate his eagerness to do things like big brothers.  Oh decisions....

  3. Things my almost 4 yr. old loves to do during school time with me is:  board games his favorites:  Hi Ho Cherri-O, Candy Land, Richard Scarry Busy Town Game, Memory.

We also are working through Rod and Staff workbooks series for Preschool-K.  He LOVES cutting so we do alot of the Kumon books where he can cut things out and glue them.  He also is obsessed with mazes so he has a book of mazes he likes to do.  We also work on printing and letter formation in a book I made for him.

I have to say other great ideas listed above we do as well.  I like doing little "science projects" when we can.  Mudpies to Magnets are good but I also like to use Magic School Bus and the Let's Find Out series books that we read and then try to add an experiment or project to go with it.

Another thing we have done is to take a walk, explore and then we come back in and I help him draw what we saw and he narrates what he saw outside and I write it down for him in his journal.  He enjoys this and is good for one on one time too.

Hope this gives you some ideas...:)

  4. I didn't think about the Subject test, his current teacher is getting ready to have a baby so she doesn't respond much to e-mails.  :(  but I am going to try again...  Wow, I noticed your son's load for the school year.  My son is taking Latin 3/4 and is taking a half semester of German this year.  But I am impressed that they are taking 3 languages.  My son wants to take Greek but I figured it would be too much on top of Latin and German and said he could start that after AP Latin.   How have they handled that load?  Thanks for your thoughts!

  5. So I am debating as to whether to have my son take AP Latin next year or to have him take another Latin Readings course next year.  He took Latin 1 & 2 using Wheelocks and is currently finishing up a Latin Readings class (Latin 3/4) this year.  Should I have him take another year of Latin Readings or would he be ready for AP Latin?  He has done really well this year (high A)  Thanks everyone!

  6. Latin for Children is what my kids used in Elementary school, my oldest then went on to Wheelocks with VP but was challenging and he did fine with it but I think it depends on the child.  My middle one went into Latin Alive after Latin for Children more his speed, yet challenging for him.  Wheelocks would have been extremely hard for him.  I really liked LAC I had no previous Latin and was able to follow along and help out.  Have heard good things about MP just never used it.  HTH

  7. I am a Janome fan, but given her age I think any would be okay.  I began with a Singer back in the day and it worked very well for many years for doing basic stuff.  I would check around with sales if there is a sewing place near you, you can always talk them down a bit.  I am glad I bought mine from a store locally in case I had problems or needed it fixed.  Something to consider, and they also need to oiled, cleaned every year or so depending on how much you sew.  If one doesn't sew that much it can extend a little longer.  HTH  :)

  8. High school transcripts should only show work done during High School.

That statement is not valid from my research.  I have talked to counselors in college as well as the Homeschooling Association in our state and you can award your child HS credit if it was indeed considered a HS course.  Just FYI for those who might be confused with this...I was for a while!  :)

For the poster's comment, I would award the years she took that our considered HS level courses in MS.  Good luck!

  9. We did Shurley during Elementary grades but it does not have diagramming and so we switched later on.  I personally like Rod and Staff and probably will use that for my youngest all the way through.  R&S is thorough and doesn't have a lot of unneeded extra and you could alter it some to get her through it.  We all have a period where we don't like something but if it is working,  I would try to stick with it.  Feel your pain...:)  In regards to writing we use IEW which works well for those who have trouble getting starting in writing.  HTH  Good luck!

  10. Looking for ideas of "curriculum" you have used to help develop learning in a foreign language for a 4 year old or early elementary age.  I am familiar with:  Little Pim videos, Muzzy, Song School Latin.

Also, what language should I choose?  My oldest takes Latin & German, my middle one studies Latin & Arabic, my little one has tagged along and has memorized some Latin already so should I just do Latin or would it be okay to add another language on top of that one?  Taking advantage of him being a sponge at present.... :)

    Thanks for your ideas!

  11. angela in ohio-

I have seen on other posts how some school districts do that depending on the course, but she made it perfectly clear that they only see them all as 1/2 of a HS credit.  It doesn't matter so much now, due to knowing that I now I can count all of the HS classes my son took in MS as part of the overall credit numbers we will be okay.  :)  Thanks for your comment!

  12. We are in the state of VA, and I spoke with our homeschool rep for our state and she informed me that any HS level class taken prior to 9th grade should be put on the transcript under the 9th grade year with an astrick on the bottom stating that it was taken earlier as in 7th or 8th grade.  They also are included for the necessary credits of HS.  Yeah, this is what I thought but wanted to let everyone else know my find....HTH someone else!  Thanks again everyone!
