Love to get some ideas from all of you! Trying to finalize plans for next year. I feel I worked my poor elementary kids to hard and now I wish we had lightened up a bit. But now that we are in MS and one in HS what does your day look like? My poor kids worked 6hrs or more every day in the early years. I feel we didn't have enough down time and outside play time.... :( Changing that on my youngest anyway.....so how long do you school for middle school and high school? Til it's done or do you try to cap a limit? Thinking of 6hrs, but will it be enough? Looking at WTM it looks more like 8hrs. So what has worked for you all? TIA!!!!

My son wants to learn German along side of his Latin. We are looking for an online or correspondence class. We have gone through the forums and have looked into BYU, OK StateU., Rolling Acres. Are their any others? I know nothing of German so I can't be of help to him. We are trying to keep it under $400 if possible for the year. TIA!!!

I talked to one of the lady's who is helping out with starting the school and they are using Adobe Connect. FYI :)

I agree we were with VP up until this year and we did NOT like their new software it didn't work on our network system using direct satellite. Any how they were not willing to work with us even though the teachers were willing to help us with the problem so we left. It was mainly the head, it was a shame we had been with them for over 4 yrs. We loved Joanna and some of the others I am tempted to contact her to see what classroom they are going to use in this new school. :) Maybe a possibility of a switch for us! We went with Scholars Online this year for Latin 2 and we love the teacher just not crazy about the set up.

Yes, I was looking at that but was thinking it might be too much since he will be in Latin 3 too next year, which were were thinking of trying there next year. He has had Latin at VP then we had to go to Scholars Online due to internet issues. I have heard Lukeion is challenging particularly in the upper Latin courses.

Looking for Biblical or ancient....thanks

Any suggestions for a good online or self paced course or book to work through. My son has taken many years of Latin and wants to start with Greek now. Thanks for your input!

We used VP for Pre-Algebra several years ago and liked it pretty well, but it moved slow and my son was bored. This year for Geometry we are using Derek Owens and my son seems to be learning and really likes he can go at his pace. Depends on your child though in how they like to learn.

Does Rod & Staff go over diagramming? That is one thing I haven't seen Shurley do much maybe it will be in the 7th grade one? Anyway, is Rod and Staff similar to Abeka does any one know or how does it compare? Thanks!

We used Abeka 11 Grammar for my oldest son this year. My husband swears by their college course at Pensacola and from what I have gathered they use the same handbook in the 11th and 12th grade. My husband is a great writer (writes for computer security policies) they all want him to do the writing part because of his ability. He believes that course helped him more than any other class. So since my oldest has already taken all of Shurley Grammar and then has taken 2 Composition classes from VP we decided to have him take Abeka this year. Yes it can be dry but seems to work and is pretty thorough. He is only in 8th grade this year and from what I understand some years are just repeats like Abeka 11&12 compatible, 9&10 etc. HTH

I know it can be challenging and scary at first! Homeschooling has come such a long way! My recommendations for you is to just sit back you have plenty of time and I wouldn't "RUSH" trying to decide. I would just begin reading as much as you can and try to decide your goals for your children to accomplish each year and then decide on how best your children learn and go from there. Don't try to do it all at first you will drive yourself nuts!!! :) Many good books out there check with your library for homeschooling books, good luck!

We used this all through elementary and I LOVED it! Neat and definitely packaged, and so much cheaper than Sonlight!!! We used the History and the Writing combo and worked great. We also correlated Veritas Press along side of it and it worked pretty well. In the guide you have for the history schedule it schedules all of your read aloud's and history reading that your child reads on their own. I used her guide pretty much all the way through 5th grade however I did add some Literature to the curriculum and I used Veritas Press literature choices and used either their Lit guides or did another Lit guide. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Just wondering what you all used after Shurley? It has served us well even though it is very repetitive....ha! Thanks!

I started my oldest in 3rd grade so he was a little late in the 4 yr. cycle. So I had him take the Omnibus Transition class online which is great for those who have not gone all the way through. He then took Omnibus 3 for 7th grade because honestly I didn't like some of the readings required in Omni I and thought that they were not very age appropriate. I hear that Omni I is one of the harder one of the three and that Omni 2 is probably the easiest. My son loved Omni 3 because they focus a lot on American history and government as well. The online class was really great and he grew in that class. He ended up with an A in both primary and secondary but he did have to read and write a lot! But we are not continuing on with Omnibus at VP for several reasons. But I can tell you that the online discussions for the online classes where very helpful to him. If I were you, continue on with Omnibus if that is your preference wherever you are in the cycle. Just start at Omni 3 and then you can circle back around and take Omni 1 in 8th and Omni 2 in 9th if you think he is able to handle it. Hope this helps

Does TOG have a good synopsis and questions that you can ask to check that they are comprehending all of their readings?

Great things to think about....thanks so much for all of your input! And yes, I know some of you all mentioned what the end of HS courses would mean anyway. I guess for me is when I can't possibly help him anymore and I am about there with a few subjects like Math and Latin and was trying to see which jump to make. Online courses I think are great for some classes but not all and then as everyone knows every university/cc colleges are not ranked equal. It is such a tough decision and him being my oldest he is my guinea pig. :-) I don't want to push him and am wanting to hold him back even though he is biting at the bit and ready to go...ha ha! It is so hard to let your children go.

My DS is doing Jacobs with Derek Owens and is doing well. I love how he makes them take notes in their books as they watch the lectures! I think it has really helped grasp the material! I also love how he gets back to you quickly with graded material and sends you a report on how they are doing. I recommend it!

We are in VA, from what I have been told our 4yr. university won't allow dual enrollment until 16, but maybe I was mislead. (Will check on that one again) Melissa, I am curious or anyone else.....what "high school" courses did your child finish before moving on the the university? That would be a great question for all!!!! I keep thinking he needs to finish all hs courses before moving on but that is not what I am hearing from others. He has taken most everything but Physics and Pre-Cal but wondering if I should just move on and have him take them there? I am lost in these areas and self paced courses I feel are somewhat hard in the science and math areas. Our cc here is allowing him to take what he wants as long as his SATs are strong. (He is taking them in March.) Yes our cc is so much cheaper than outsourcing to online courses and then some classes I feel need to be done in a classroom setting. Thanks for all your postings, a lot to think about!

Julie,
How rigorous is MFW compared to Omnibus or do you have any idea? We liked Omnibus but was not real excited about a few of the book choices and internet issues are a problem for us now. Thanks!
-
Julie,
How is the rigor of MFW for 9th grade in the ancients? Would the 6th grader find it too difficult? I have been looking at it but not sure if it is a good fit for both?
How many hrs. a day to you school? What does a day look like for you?
