  1. I like MM and have found it to give a good basis for my monkeys. That said, dd, my non-mathy child, took a bit of time going through it and had a bit of a hard time getting some of the concepts down. Manipulatives and games helped to get her through the tougher parts. Now that we're about 1/2 way through 2A, I glad we pushed through level 1 because now she understands the whys and hows.

Ds, on the other hand, has moved much more quickly through 1A and has just started 1B. However, I'm anticipating that by summer he'll be in 2A. He understands the basics much better and seems to acquire the skills more quickly than dd.

  2. I've been eying some of the Intellego units and have come awfully close to just buying one to check it out more closely. What kind of prep work does it generally involve- gathering supplies? Reserving library books? Something else...?

Usually library books, sometimes I don't have a few supplies on hand. I also like to check the links before hand. While Intellego does find new links for broken ones, I like to know ahead of time where the new link redirects so I can see if its worth our time doing or if I would rather find something else. But overall, the monkeys are enjoying the weather unit. We also have the k-2 astronomy (we'll switch back to this in the spring when the weather warms,) habitats and human body along with gr 3-5 astronomy and chemistry (we haven't tried these yet.)

  3. Since buying the Light Blue series the year before last I've been emailed with links to updated copies of Year 1 and Year 2. It's been quite some time since the most recent one (unless I missed an email) - I'm pretty sure Year 2 was updated before last year's HSBC sale, but don't quote me.

Same here. Have there been new updates?

  4. Lively Latin has a lot of color and a lot of variety (one day you're doing grammar, the next history, the next English derivatives...), which I think is a nice fit for younger kids. It's a big jump up in the level of Latin involved, though. We're planning to take it slowly.

I've been eyeing LL as what dd will move into once she and her brother are done with SSL. I'm *hoping* SSL2 will be out by then so I can use it with ds while she starts LL. I figure she can always join in on SSL2 because she seems to like the songs and chants. I'll let ds try LL if he's interested but I don't seem him being ready for it just yet.

  5. While I was more history focused in high school, I took most of the AP classes available to us. So I wound up, somehow, in AP Calculus with a teacher who was wonderful about tutoring us after school/ or after school activities (as in my case -- I was on swim team). I was in honors track which afford me Chemistry in junior year. Yet somehow I never had physics...

  6. :iagree:I use MM in addition to Fred. I have to say, though, Fred has a deceptively large amount of conceptual math in it, presented in a manner that is perfect for my verbal DD (and her mother). Just not much computation. You would definitely need to add practice with basic computations.

:iagree: I don't believe the elementary series is stand alone. It is a good for Friday Fun math.

  7. I know I'm answering my own question, but look what I just found. Anyone use it? I just found it, so I haven't looked at it much, but it seems intriguing. :D

PS - Well, I looked at it. It's not quite what I'm looking for, but it may be a useful supplement, especially for lapbooking.

    This looks neat!

I was looking at Intellego's K-2 Geography: Continents and Cultures and pairing it with their Globetrotting with Folktales (both on sale right now at Currclick.)

  8. The monkeys went to a local, parent run coop for a year. They enjoyed it for the socialization, not so much for the classes. While I enjoyed meeting other families, I wasn't disappointed when my work schedule changed. The 5 hour days were long, teacher prep for a course I wound up taking over on top of my 30 hour work week was tiring, and I wasn't a fan of having to jump in at the last minute to keep a class going. Instead we go to park day and get that out of the house socialization we all need.

  9. We are currently using SSL1 and are on our 2nd attempt. (The first one being interrupted by my now former pregnancy. He's currently 2.5 months. :D) I'm a SSL2 hold out who worries we might be done before SSL2 is ready. I keep waffling between starting LFC (dd would be 9 by then) or Lively Latin. Lately I've also considered going with an I Speak Latin and Getting Started with Latin combo (as I also have a 6yo.) Has anyone done this? What has worked for the gap? I may have to start dd and just have ds wait in limbo, but I'd rather not do that.

  10. I'm another SSL2 hold out. I keep waffling between starting LFC (dd would be 9 by then) or Lively Latin. Lately I've also considered going with an I Speak Latin and Getting Started with Latin combo (as I also have a 6yo.) I thought the last mention of SSL2 was for sometime this Spring? As long as it comes out by Summer, I won't have to worry about it. :)
