  1. Hi all!  This has been a hard weekend for me, that's why I didn't check in this morning, I'm sort of ok now though.  Had a great time in church and then ran to Austin to pick dd and her friend up to bring them here for Ds to take them to the airport.  Had to run to the store and pick up a few things and now I'm home and hoping to relax a bit.

  2. Good morning!  I got to sleep in a bit but the natives are up now and I should run to the store and get something for breakfast.  Angi, my appointment went ok yesterday, she did stray off topic a couple of times but, was able to bring it back pretty quickly.  I guess I'll go ahead and the day started.

I had a baseball hat show up in the mail on Monday, and today I had tickets to the new Fantastic Beasts  movie from Fedex early in the morning, and a $5 gas gift card in the mail this afternoon! ??? I love the little prizes as much as the big ones!

I'm so jealous!  Enjoy your prizes and tell us about the movie, I'm thinking of going to see it for my birthday next week.

and it's a jealousy will get you nowhere booya/h!!

    Look for reviews online first.

Is the acupuncturist licensed in her state?

Are needles single use?  (they should be)

What process do they have for evaluating progress?  (many places will tell you what to expect after a month of treatment, for example)

Are there any side effects for the treatment?

How frequent will the sessions be?  (In my case it was more than once a week at first and then tapered down to once a week and then once every two weeks and then once a month)

    Thank you Jean!

I have.  It doesn't hurt.  The acupuncturist sat down with me prior in a free consultation to discuss my health very comprehensively.  The clinic was clean and well managed.  They also sold Chinese herbal medicines but I didn't take any of those.  In my case though I discontinued it after awhile because it made no difference to my pain levels (which is why I was going).  Others I know have been helped a lot.

Than you so very much!  Are there any question she should ask?

I would schedule practice time as "first lesson" of the day. It's a tricky cycle - if they don't practice, they don't learn; and if they don't learn, it becomes boring and very difficult to practice.  How long has he been having lessons?  I am a stickler, but I would insist on at least a year of lessons with actual practice going on.  Or drop it altogether.

If he's less than 10yo, I'd schedule 10 minutes to practice for a week or two until that seems manageble, and then increase by 5 minute intervals.  Maybe he is not really sure what or how to practice when he is away from the teacher?  It might be helpful to take a short video of the teacher going over what and how he needs to practice?

Practice should happen every day, even when other lessons are not happening.  (Suzuki said "make music every day that you eat."  My kids don't usually practice on the weekends, but it's that kind of mindset.) You could have him "teach" you.  Or a sibling.  Or a favorite toy.  Have him "perform" whatever he is working on at least once a week for the family.  If anyone else plays an instrument or sings, you can do it together, which is always more fun.

I didn't pay for lessons for my kids until they would practice on their own regularly and seemed generally committed to it.  (I taught them myself for a couple years before that.)

FWIW, it is a challenge to motivate oneself unless you are in a family where that is just what most everyone does.  Music especially, because it is just so stinking hard and takes a ton of effort. So a lot of family support and encouragement are super beneficial.

Well, these are just a few of my thoughts on it, and very influenced by my own family and upbringing.  But you know your kids and family best, so ymmv.

Thank you, he does practice everyday except the weekends.  He was teaching me and he was willing to practice then to some degree but, then I kind of quit on him so, maybe we'll go back to that and I'll have him practice first.  How long should I have him practice at 11yo?

  7. Susan, I need your help.  Ds youngest takes piano lessons, he's doing them with a friend so the lessons are free but, he doesn't want to practice at all.  The reason the lessons are free is because my friend wanted to teach her dd and thought it would make it more fun for her if she had someone doing it with her.  Now, my Ds is not in any danger of being the next big thing but, if I'm taking time out of my day to take him to lessons, I want him to be getting something more than a play date.  Should I get him a paid teacher or just stop the lessons or just let him dabble?

  8. Oh my goodness!  I forgot to tell you guys about my trip to the grocery store.  So, youngest Ds and I walk into the grocery store this afternoon and we see this guy standing in line wearing a Spongebob head, a white tshirt, his underwear and shoes and he had the Spongebob theme song playing really loudly on his phone.  The manager did ask him to leave, I laughed so hard.

  9. Good Sunday morning!  My Fitbit says I slept 2hr.40min, last night and I'm inclined to believe it, I feel like I've been run over by a Peterbilt this morning.  We have church, which I'll have to leave early to get dd to work, a store run, then home for a nap, I hope.

    Lynn-is your mom ok?

    Susan-hope your cough stops soon.

Slache-so glad you don't have to cancel your trip!
