  1. Nothing have heard of yet. However I have major sugar cravings and when they get really bad I make a HUGE fruit smoothie. Every morning for a couple of days I will combine oranges, peaches, strawberries and pineapple and drink it. Usually within in 2 days no cravings and they stay away for quite a while (like months sometimes!).

It would be worth a try because it sure makes life a lot more pleasant when you arent worrying about sugar! :)

  2. I get UTI's routinely and this is what I do.

As soon as I feel one coming on I start drinking cranberry juice. This can be harder to find but get the highest percent of juice possible. I also picked up some Cranberry capsules at Fred Meyer for about $8 I think. I take 3 of those a day. Usually within a day my symptoms are cleared up but I still take all the cranberry for a couple days.

    Hope you feel better! :)

I remember the magazine Growing Without Schooling had an entire issue of essays/interviews with homeschool grads looking back at their homeschool experience. I think the issue would have been between 1997 and 2001.

Jessie Wise has spoken frequently about her experience.

Zan Tyler has a talk that she gives at conferences titled Life in the Firey Furnace that talks about how she started homeschooling in South (North?) Carolina back before it was legal. I got chills listening to her talk about this, because it is easy to forget how close in time this was.

There is another interesting book with profiles of African-American homeschoolers. I thought this one was interesting because of some of the challenges they face that I don't tend to encounter. (For example, I'm not likely to be considered a sell out if I abandon public schools or be seen to be rejecting the work of those who struggled to get integrated schools.) I think the title was Freedom Challenge.

    Homeschooling: A Family's Journey

Some of these I ran into just browsing Amazon.

Are you working on a project for a class?

Thank you for these suggestions. I am off to check them out.

I am doing a research paper, well sort of. I have to put together all the citations I would/could use if I were to choose this topic as a research project. This week we have to find biographies and directories that relate to our topic. I am having to get creative with a lot of my submissions because there isn't vast amounts of information (at least not the type my professor is looking for). Books I have found to be the most difficult to nail down. There are a lot of books out there regarding Homeschooling but when I have specific criteria....well it makes it a little tougher.

Anyway thank you for this list I will go see if they are what I need and can use. :)

  4. I am looking for a book about someone within the homeschooling movement that is biographical in nature. It does not matter if it is a book written by a mother regarding her homeschooling journey or if it was one about a major name within the movement.

Anyone have a title off the top of their head????

P.S. Bonus points if you can help with the title of a magazine article with the same criteria as above! :)

  5.

The only other suggestion I can add is to have your dh get down, er, there and talk to the baby, maybe read a story or sing a song. He probably will feel really silly and so might you, but for some reason babies love daddy's voice.

Oh yes! Dh would sit between my legs (I was reclined back on the sofa) and play the guitar each night. She loved it and would mellow right out. :) She still does every time he plays even now 2 years later.

  6. I use my husband ipod and earphones. I put on really strong classical music (I used Litz piano last time) and then position the earphones right about my pubic bone. It took about 3 minutes before my kiddo flipped head down. Every morning and night I would play classical music, opera, hymns, etc and at night I would play strong piano. She stayed head down for the rest of my pregnancy.

Might be worth a try for you! :) If it works be prepared for a stomach contortion show unlike any you have seen before!!

  7. I have more ideas but I will post this little tid bit for now. http://nourishedkitchen.com/food-stamp-challenge-the-end/ This is the last post this blogger did in a month long series about feeding her family of 3 (or 4) on a food stamp budget (I belive it was $236 a month). Her goal was to only eat healthy foods and stay within budget. Check out her menu lists that she has attached to each weeks post.

    Good luck.

ETA: The meals on this site are a million times more healthy than hillbilly housewife and I do belive she does it cheaper! :)

  8. So what is the best conditioner to use for curls? I find them to be either to thin and almost slimy (where my hair is almost greasy when I get out of the shower!) or WAY to thick that my curls are droopy and well unattrative to boot!

If, like a lot of you are saying, I were to leave my conditioner in (even partially) I would have greasy looking hair by night. I like in a really dry climate too so its not like its because enviromentally there is too much extra moisture.

  9. for chocolate chip cookies.

Years ago I recieved those recipe cards in the mail every six weeks. I had two sets going, one called Easy Everyday Cooking and the other was Easy to Bake Easy to Make (link here).

There was a recipe (I think) called Secret Ingredient Chocolate Chip Cookies. It was divine, heavenly, amazing.

And I lost it. I have craved and longed for these blasted cookies for nearly 5 years.

Anyone have it and willing to share???? :D I'll send you some if you do!

  10. My parents are/were alcoholics and drug users among many other colorful things so we definatly saw our fair share. Although most of it fell on the shoulders of my brother1 who commited suicide 2 years ago. My dad nearly strangled him to death when he was 4ish after the death of my other brother2. My dad blamed my brother1 for some reason or another. Ironically when they did the autopsy there were drugs present in my brother2 body.

  11. Hmmm, I went to elementary school with a girl named Kendra. Probably not her though. As I recall, she was a tough little customer who smoked cigars out behind the barn and wore hard shoes that really hurt when she kicked you. Yeah...on second though, probably not her!:D

You never know her love of cigars could have driven her to the older men...Hugh Hefner definatly qualifies as older! :) Maybe the were smokin' buddies instead of.....well ya.

  12. I'm guessing Kendra is one of the former Playboy Playmates on Girl's Next Door, aka Hugh Hefner's girlfriends. She married a football player and is pregnant or just had a baby or something, so she's been all over the entertainment news. I couldn't tell you who the other K names are. Actually, now that I'm thinking maybe some of the other "K" names are the Kardashians?

Yes! Putting the little blips together you nailed it! :) Thank you I haven't been able to figure it out and it has been driving me crazy!

  13. Could someone PLEASE explain to me how to use the cue cat?

I bought it but it just wasn't working very well for me. I'd love to use it; it seems so fast but the input I got was garbled or something. I found it the other day and felt wistful.

Stripe- check this out (if you haven't already) http://www.librarything.com/cuecat

It looks like you are supposed to have a garbled mess and then it is supposed to be converted by the site.

Sorry, I'm not more help than that. I haven't ever even heard of one of these things until this thread! :)

  14.

So many people have taken the H1N1 vaccine, and I still haven't heard anything negative, but it's possible these are the first. It does seem unlikely that you would know both of the first cases, so it could just be a coincidence.

We have 5 cases in my town that I can think of right off the top of my head. An entire family got it as soon as it was available and now they are down for the count. Their baby was hospitalized (for precausions sake) but released later that day as he was doing fine. I dont know the state of their health before hand or any more of the situation as I havent felt like bugging them when they feel so awful! :)

An friend of ours who is an ER P.A. has said they have seen a handful of cases such as this. My town is only 3000 people! I imagine that across the US there are many more instances such as these.

  15. The difference is that almost 1/2 the hospitalized cases have NO underlying conditions and are predominantly young. That's what makes it different.

We have NO way of predicting which healthy people will recover fine and which will require ventilation and which will die.

The instances where the healthy people who recieved the vaccine already and ended up in the hospital is what I am most concerned about. If you are vaccinated isnt the point not to get the flu? Here locally the ER has been flooded with people thinking they have H1N1 while 99% don't even come close. The hype surrounding this is alarming and is causing issues here in my small town.

I am not down playing the severity of those who do in fact get it but everyone here locally that has gotten it is fine in a few days as with any other type of flu.

There is never a way to predict who will be perfectly fine from any sickness. It is impossible. Having a shot may be peace of mind for many but it isnt for me. We continue to work on preventative measures in our home and for us that will work for now. Until I am satisfied that the shot is less harmful than the flu our family will not recieve it.

  16. We are not getting it for many of the same reasons that have already been mentioned.

Also, my Dad's unit (Army - stationed in Germany) received the 70's rushed swine flu vax and almost all of his unit suffered side effects. (many long term, serious side effects) He has voiced his opinion of this vax and he does not want us to get it. I just do not feel comfortable about this vax at all. We don't do the seasonal flu shot either.

    :iagree:

The fact that there were more deaths from the vaccine in the 70's than the flu is enough for me. I worry when there is such a rush on something like this. These things should be studied long and hard before they are pushed on elderly, sick, children and pregnant women especially.

  17. I am not satisfied with the information regarding this vaccine. In fact the more I read the more I am worried about why they are actually pushing this vaccine to the degree they are. From what I have read and those who I have spoken too, there is little difference between H1N1 and the regular flu assuming you are not health compromised to begin with. The process is still the same, wait it out, get rest, fluids etc. In my opinion it is not something I am willing to "try" on my kids.

  18. OH MY GOSH!! You must have been at MY house today! It has been absolutely horrible. I seriously thought about signing them up...BUT I didn't because, well because I love HSing. Just a really, really bad day...

Sounds like my last week! Oh boy did I consider just sending her to school! I finally called the whole week off and wow what a difference that made. So far this week is going much better for us.

    Hope you day gets better!
