  1. I am so wishy washy on this subject.

We will be having our 4th baby in Dec. This will be our last for many reasons. Dh is prepared to have a vastectomy but I have been considering a tubal instead for the main reason I will already be having a c-section. It makes more sense to take care of it at the same time. It also seems wrong to me to make such a permanant change to my body (or dh for that matter) but honestly at this point something has to be done as it is a health risk for me to have more children.

I have heard horrible things associated with tubal ligations but only a handfull of things about vastectomy. My main concern is that I will have worse periods than I currently do. I already will end up on the bathroom floor with cramps and bleeding, well we won't even go there. I have read that a side effect can be increased monthly cramping and flow. :glare: Who wants that ya know?

So would you have one? Have you had one? What was your experiance?

Are the side effects really as bad and frequent as all the research says?

  2. Sticker shock happens here too. I have a very limited buget to make do and finding a great workbook for $10 has sent me into tears before! $10! I cant spend that on one simple consumable book. LOL I feel your pain.

One trick I use is to keep a list of books in my purse. When I hit the thrift stores I spend a large amount of time just sifting through. I have found Spelling Workout books for $1, Horizon workbooks for $1, a HUGE amount of classical read alouds etc. It takes a lot of time but I find them.

My second (and life saving) tip is use your tax return. :D We use out federal return for other things but our state is just like a huge bonus gift. Last year I think it was $250 or so. For weeks I scoured Amazon and WTM sale board. I got all of our curriculum for 1st grade, all workbooks for K, and a large selection of read alouds for $250. I still choked paying that much but it really was a great deal.

  3. I made one of these up months ago when another thread inspired me. Since school has started I have had a few things I needed to tweak. Here is my new lesson plan with its new look. The things that are actually typed in are the things that dont change every week. Otherwise I print a copy each Sunday night and fill out to my hearts content. :)

Sorry its a link I can't get it to upload. New Lesson Plan

  4. Last year I printed out a book of the major systems of the body. It was supposed to be printed on vellum so everything was visible in layers. I thought I found it on homeschoolshare but I have searched pages and pages and can't seem to find it.

Does anyone know what I am talking about and have the link for it?? The kiddos are begging for it today! :)

  5. Oh! That's me! That's me! I'm not sure I really enjoy the low grade pain, but I seem to operate under the delusion that I work better in crisis mode (I don't) and have only recently stopped over-extending myself with "fun" activities.

For me, it has nothing to do with being able to say no. Everything sounds great. By itself. If someone proposed ALL the different commitments as a laundry list (you know, how it appears on your calendar?), I'd run for the hills.

Oh boy you nailed that one on the head. How many times I have said "I work best under stress!" LOL Now that is funny! No one works well under stress including me. I feel like I have to work well because I have no other choice. Of course I have a choice but then I would feel lazy not having a ton of things going on. What a vicious cycle I find myself on!

  6. Yeah I do, all the time. It's like I can not help myself, I have to be stressed, overwhelemed and busy all the time. It drives me crazy but I still do it! :)

This year I am hsing 2 kiddos, expecting baby #4 in Dec, just started a girl scout troop (k-5!!), going to school full time, and serving in church.

Seriously is there an addictin group for those of us who are crazy enough to over extend all the time!? It has nothing to do with saying "NO" to others either, this is all my own doing.

Its really not that bad but I am feeling overwhelmed right now as I try and get dinner and homework done and plan for the girl scout troop meeting.

  7. Thank you for the ideas and suggestions. I know that for the 4yo this is asking quite a lot and I definatly dont require him to sit still. My dd however is the one that I think should be able to, but I wasnt sure with the ADD as an added issue.

I guess we will just keep plugging away until she is able to handle things a little better. :) Headed over to the special needs forum for a few ideas in the mean time.

  8. My dd is going to be 7 in December (and is ADD!) and ds will be 5 in March. They still can not sit still through our church service (1hr) and it drives me nuts!! I dont mind the wiggles when they are contained to where they sit, however they move around, wiggle, talk (loudly at times) etc. I feel like at the very least my dd should be able to handle sitting there quietly and fairly still. Am I crazy in this thinking?

Anyone have any tips to help "learn" this skill? Tips, tricks. etc?

  9. I wouldn't.

I had a friend named Elaine who had a sister named Delaine. When you phoned their house you never knew which you'd get on the phone - I think her parents just thrust the phone at the nearest girl.....

My current 'cause no end of embarassing name mix ups' is my neighbour who is called Delia and has a dd named Dana. I'm forever mixing them up....

This is a good point. My mom is Kathy and my sister is Cassie. It was HORRIBLE to try and understand people over the phone. Anyone with a slightly different dialect would make it even harder.

Thanks for bringing this up, I hadn't thought about it!

  10. We bought a Brother 7040 last month. I LOVE IT!!! Seriously one of my favorite purchases of all time! We have printed over 1000 pages on the free cartridge already with more to come. I read all the reviews on amazon and there were very few bad things about it. The toner, when I priced them were about $40-50 (cant quite remember) but you are able to get over 1500 pages each toner. Read the reviews on Amazon because there is a trick to making a brother toner last longer, lol so far its worked for us! :)

I think we got ours on sale and only paid $140 or so for it.

  11. Liam if your older son was named Ian? :)

I keep picturing myself call out the back door "Ian! Liam!" and they sound so similar I wonder if this would be a huge confusing mess.

The middle names would be very different but I wouldnt be using those all the time. We don't use nicknames so they wouldn't/don't have another name to go by.

  12. Idaho is about as simple as it gets. Nothing at all required at all in anyway. In fact we just had a law amendment a few months ago that even took out all the obnoxious wording like "comparable to public education". We have some great law makers on board with homeschooling. There are a lot of groups here (with Boise having some of the best options!).

All that said, I live in the middle of no where in a small town and while we have a local HS group, I find it very lonely. I have lost "friends" because my kids dont go to PS. I know this isnt a state wide issue more just my town.

A place I wouldnt go? Hmmm probably NY but only because I am spoiled here! However if my dh were offered a secure well paying job in NY you bet we would be there and I would have to learn record keeping skills! :)

  13. I've never had an issue with homegrown chicken eggs (duck are a whole other matter!!!) peeling. All I do is store them in the fridge until ready to use. Boil, then drain all water from the pot and fill with cold water. I let them sit for a couple of minutes to cool off and then they peel easily. I dont know if this is just my luck or it this is a tried and true method. :) I just know it works for me. Good luck.

PS I second the backyardchicken forum. Lots of good info there!

  14. I began my college years with ASL interpreting and Deaf Education. I changed plans a ways into it but I have always loved ASL. It has served me well over the years as I have always lived in an area that has a state deaf school, so I have had regular contact with those who speak it.

There are so many opprotunities to use ASL not only as a kid, but as an adult in the workforce. Not to mention it is fun! If your dd is interested in taking the courses I would highly reccommend it if not for anything than just the experiance. My kids are starting it now and it makes them giggle everytime to start practice. :)

  15. Tonight we were on the way home from town when the following was said....

"Hey mom when we get home can I change my underware cause they are really sweaty. Isn't that disgusting!"

Dh and I tried so hard not to laugh but we both burst into giggles. DD laughed too and said "well they are."

    LOL had to share. :)
