  1. What about Bill Bennett's The Last Best Hope? It seems to be a lighter read than Johnson, but has a good, narrative flow. HTH:)
  2. I am looking for an engaging history for the Early Modern period. I happened to come across Will Durant's Story of Civilization in my search. I thought I could use volumes 7,8, and 9. Would this be appropriate for 10th grade? If you used it, did your student enjoy it? Thanks:)
  3. It was not clear in the article whether the police had a court order to seize the girl. Did I miss something?
  4. I guess what really sticks out to me in the situation you describe is their response when you discussed it with them. This is just the way they "roll"? They might be your friends, but they don't have any respect for your time and feelings. I have been late before, but I always make an effort to correct the situation and make sure it doesn't happen again. I don't understand why they wouldn't make a change if they knew it was inconveniencing you. If they are habitually 20 min. late, then they should get out of bed 20 min. earlier in the morning. It is as simple as that.
  5. If she is already doing well with written narrations/summaries, then it would not be necessary to do WWE. WWE trains the student to hold the information in their head long enough to get that information down on paper. It appears you daughter is already doing this. HTH, Linda
  6. This is very encouraging. Thank you for posting it.:001_smile: Linda
  7. Sailor Mom, Which documentary did you watch? I would like to do this with my kids. Thanks, Linda
  8. I have a 6'3" grand. I was a piano major in college. If you plan on continuing with lessons, you will want to invest in a quality instrument. I would suggest finding a copy of Larry Fine's The Piano Book. He covers all you need to know about size, brands, and whether to buy new or used. Happy Shopping, Linda
  9. Yes, the student worktext is consumable.
  10. I'm Linda, mom of three. I have been lurking for about a year, but I have used TWTM as my homeschooling guidebook since 2003. My oldest started 9th grade this year so I usually lurk on the high school boards. These boards have been so helpful during our first year of high school.
  11. We love Lial's Intro to Algebra. My daughter has always struggled in math, but Lial's is so well organized that she has been doing well. We take it slower, depending on my daughter's understanding of the concept. I want her to really understand what she is doing so if it takes us longer than a year, that's okay. One resource that I also found helpful is a workbook called Mastering Essential Math Skills: Book Two by Richard W. Fisher. I found it on Amazon. I have used this to help dd brush up on some foundational skills, such as fractions, percents, etc. HTH, Linda
  12. This is such a shame. I have used this website a lot over the past year and my kids have always enjoyed the assignments I borrowed from Mrs. Effie. I am going to make a donation.
  13. This essay may be of interest. http://etext.virginia.edu/railton/projects/rissetto/offense.html
