  1. There was another poster on this thread looking to buy as well. I've already purchased mine from Gander. Thank you for the offer though.
  2. Thank you, OneStep. That was very helpful. I was hoping LiPS would take us no later than Sept. 2014 and then we'd begin with Barton. Time will tell. Yes, shipping costs are dreaded here too, but we are used to it. Living in Canada and all. :)
  3. Thank you, OneStep. You have been extremely helpful. I'm glad you are steps ahead of me. BTW, do you remember how long your son used LiPS? Maybe you've posted it elsewhere, but I can't remember. :)
  4. Thanks for your opinion. I know you have much experience and great advice to offer those who are beginning the journey with a SN child. I have already submitted my order. Maybe I'm jumping the gun, but I feel like so much time has been wasted already. I feel the need to do something, anything really. I'm not sure what paths we will take in regards to evaluations, but at least this is a start. My son did recently have a hearing testing and an auditory processing test (both performed by the same audiologist). He passed the hearing test and we haven't yet received the results for the auditory processing test. I have a feeling the results aren't going to matter though, as the testing was similar to Part A of the Barton test, which he aced. Again, thanks for weighing in.
  5. That would be great. I read a thread OhE started on LiPS. Based on a few suggestions I read there, I decided to purchase the manual, the deck of cards, and the large mouth pictures. If I feel I need more I'll place another order, but I don't have any qualms about making some homemade stuff. $200 is easier on the budget than $400+. :)
  6. My son is 9 (as of this month). I will google "minimal pairs". Thanks for that.
  7. We did the screening in the same room. There was nothing different in the way of background noise, etc. My hunch is that 4pm was too late in the day for him to focus well. But, yes, after yo-yo-ing back and forth, I'm going to go ahead and order LiPS.
  8. Thank you, OneStep. I appreciate hearing your background. I've been perusing many older threads and am learning a lot. The fact that my son failed the screening test yesterday, then passed it today, is baffling me.
  9. I administered it yesterday around 4pm. He aced Parts A & B (except he guessed the word alligator has 2 syllables) and bombed Part C. He would say the sounds incorrectly, point to the blocks incorrectly, all of it. This morning I administered the test again just after Math, about 10am. He didn't score 100%, but did pass. He said one or two sounds incorrectly, but pointed to the blocks correctly each time. I asked him if he struggled with hearing the sounds correctly or memorizing the sequence of the sounds. He said both. He said he often hears b as d, t as ch, etc. Has anyone had a similar experience? Recommendations? Last night, I was set to order LiPS, now I'm not sure.
  10. We are looking into purchasing LiPS for our newly turned 9 yo son. What materials would you consider to be worthwhile investments? I'm tempted to purchase the kit, but don't want to waste resources if it's unnecessary. The magnets seem expensive, but the mouth picture cards look helpful. Also, do you have any suggestions for purchasing this used? I checked here and ebay, but without success. Thanks.
  11. We are currently listening to MOH Vol. 1 on cd. The year began with History Revealed Vol. 1, but the author's voice was too grating. We listen to it once a week during an hour long drive. Probably at least 4-5 lessons per drive. For us, we seem to be able to accomplish more than I anticipate when we use audio vs. Mom reading aloud.
  12. I think if you're soaking more than a pad an hour, it's wise to get medical care. Otherwise, rest, eat and drink well, and take the time to grieve. (Hug)
  13. I think there are 90 lessons and 1 lesson can be easily done in a sitting. 2-3 lessons per week would be have it completed by the end of the school year.
  14. Do you have any particular recommendations for books or sites? Hard work, exercise, and outdoor play are a must here. Also, very little sugar and processed foods.
  15. I used Preparing for the 2012-2013 school year with a 9/10yo and a 7/8yo. I expected more from my oldest obviously. He did the written narrations himself, while I scribed for my younger. My oldest read the storytime selections independently. I read some of the independent history selections aloud, as I wanted my younger to hear them, and knew I could not trust him to read them himself. They enjoyed CHOW, and loved Grandpa's Box and Find the Constellations. I skipped Pedro's Journal and some of the science selections. You could definitely use this with a 9 and 7yo as long as you're willing to tweak if necessary. If you want this to be an independent program, I suggest waiting until your oldest is capable (say, 4th grade) and just let him have at it.
  16. Yes, I was thrilled to see that when I visited last. I'm working on lesson planning for next year and am spending much time on your blog.
  17. Thanks for sharing this. It looks fabulous. If you felt inclined to change your blog background, I would be thankful. My eyes are  .
  18. Thanks. I pm'd KathyJo and she's going to adjust her copyright info.
  19. I downloaded KathyJo's free Spelling Journal from Lulu. I can't print it at home, so I sent the pdf file to my nearest office supply store for printing. They contacted me and said they couldn't print it as it's copyrighted. I looked in their FAQ on their website, which said they were unable to print any copyrighted materials without written permission. Is this normal protocol? How in the world can I print it? Experience? Suggestions?
  20. I haven't read the previous replies. For me, a large room on the upper level would be awesome with little ones. Plenty of space for them to play and wander, and yet they are contained too.
  21. 10 Days in the Americas board game to add to our other 10 Days games. My littles are getting a beautiful doll house that we'll keep Barbie-free. I bought a Lottie doll to start off with. My in-laws are buying Melissa & Doug dolls.
  22. Thank you for your replies everyone. :) Have you found DM to be time-consuming on your part or can your daughter do it independently (for the most part)?
  23. Thank you, everyone. I greatly appreciate your replies. Yes, time is something I'm short on too. Math is not my strong subject, although my husband is wonderful with it. I took ACE Math from K-12, which was crippling, IMO. :) I'm curious as to why so many chose not to complete Singapore 6? Unnecessary review?
