  1. thank you for those suggestions...just today i discovered that our local university (an hour away) has a psych center...i will look into it!!
  2. Ok...I see all through the posts on this board...."get neuropsych evaluation"...or "my dc's neuropsych evaluation"...etc...but how does one go about getting a neuropsych eval? I guess I'm at a loss since I've brought this up a couple times to our family dr. and they seem clueless....and aren't sure where to send us. Of course, you have to understand that we live in the middle of nowhere KY!! So...considering I live in the middle of nowhere, and can't seem to get an adequate referral from our family doc, how do I proceed? Does anyone else have good experience with someone in this state? What am I looking for in selecting someone to do these evaluations. I see a few professionals come up when i do an internet search for this state, but I'm not sure who would be the most appropriate. Any help would be appreciated! PS....my son is suspected aspie/add and my daughter dyslexic...but i'm always second guessing myself, so really feel the evaluations would be helpful!
  3. I'm so sorry things are so rough with your boy! That's got to be very tough for all of you!! I'm wondering what alternative therapies you have tried, since I'm not at all familiar with your situation. It may be that you've done everything possible. I was at my integrative dr. office a couple weeks ago, and he mentioned a recent patient with tics that had been to specialists across the country to no avail. He did some micronutrient testing and found some significant results (not sure of results...sorry) and with appropriate treatment, his tics were cured. I know this might not be the case for you....but I'd hate not to bring it up just in case it might be of assistance!
  4. I travel over 1 1/2 hours to get to mine! So I wouldn't expect one to be close by, unless you live in a very large center! What state are you in....you can pm me and I can give you some recommendations!
  5. I go to an integrative doctor. He is a qualified MD that has studied integrative therapies. Wonderful!!
  6. Help!! I'm completely overwhelmed by the process of developing schedules for our school year. I am doing my children a disservice by not providing them more structure...especially my add/aspie 15yoDS. He needs a more rigid structure to his day than I've been providing him. Can anyone give me either some curriculum ideas that are easy to schedule or an approach to take for someone in my situation. thanks,
  7. Hey...I'm so sorry that it's so difficult with your child!! {{{{HUGS}}}} My oldest DD also used to have wildly abusive moods. She didn't lash out physically (most of the time), but was verbally abusive and out of control. We finally noticed the relationship to this behavior and some poor food choices, such as "slushies", caffeinated beverages, and other artificially colored foods. We found out about the "Feingold" elimination diet and haven't looked back! It's made a huge difference in the mood/behavior around here! My oldest also ended up being sensitive to dairy, and eliminating that has made her behavior even more stable! I hope that you can come up with a solution to this soon!!
  8. LisaAnne....thank you for your encouragement! We have changed curriculum several times, tried online classes (older DD excelled in these and is graduating with all A's from her online school), and now....I'm not sure what to do! He's very bright...he has a natural inclination to research information of interest and can tell you all details about what he reads. However, focusing on completing school work seems nearly impossible!
  9. AK Mom....you don't know how grateful i am to hear your story!! That's exactly what he's going through and I'm very encouraged that things will get better with time. I have been biding my time, helping him plod along through the little work that is assigned each week. I've also increased his chores somewhat, esp. to get him outside in the sun more often! He's actually happy to be doing them. I'm glad to hear things worked out for your son!
  10. Kai...that's a good question. I'm pretty much hands off. I've tried to be more hands on...but it never worked with him. He was always resistant to my teaching, and enjoyed learning directly from books. However, with me being ADD as well, its hard for me to keep him on schedule. Right now, he's just doing his online class. We are slowly adding back some of his other classes, however I don't think he'll finish most of them this year. I'm not sure I want to pressure him just yet, it would depress him that he can't get it finished!!
  11. cjbeach....thanks for that! it's interesting though, he has been on a swim team since age 5...absolutely hates it...i've allowed him to cut back as long as he is running (we've started a homeschool track team). I agree absolutely that its essential...but the swimming was stressing him more. Running is much more theraputic for him!
  12. I could really use some help/suggestions please!! My 15yo 10th grader has lost this school year completely. He had been doing an online class this fall that was "right up his alley" - History through Film. He did very well, and kept up reasonably well with other classes I assigned him. I knew that he wasn't putting as much effort into them, but he was keeping up. Then January came....and moderate to severe depression! We got him over the depression, through vitamins, light therapy, and other supplements (prescribed by a qualified doctor). However, he still can't function well enough to feel capable of doing school work. We have him barely keeping up with his online class (World history through film). He feels incapable of completing work. Since I also have ADD, I'm not sure where to begin making changes for him. We live in a VERY underserviced area, with few professionals that are qualified. I would have to drive significant distances for help. Also, our income is very limited. I'm thinking that something like an educational consultant might be helpful. Either that or an ADD coach? I would appreciate any suggestions anyone has. I'm at my wit's end...he's very very bright, but doesn't feel he can do anything!! Thanks, Darlene
  13. Like memphisthread....we too couldn't afford to go on campus tours this summer...or even now...plus my dh and dd BOTH had accidents this spring and required surgery and 6 weeks on crutches (do you know what its like having 2 people "crutching" through a house...a SMALL house???). We considered piggybacking some visits with a family vacation in August. It would have required 3 nights in hotels and 500 extra miles. We vetoed it! And we're glad, we have since removed all 3 of the prospective colleges from her short list for other reasons. If she ACTUALLY applies and gets accepted at the college, we will consider investing in a visit. :001_smile:
  14. Michele....thanks for the info...I assume that won't work for applying online....so I guess we have to send in paper applications?
  15. Stephanie...sorry I can't help you...I'm interested in knowing this as well!
  16. thanks for all your help! we have postponed our visit until we decide whether or not to apply later in the year!
  17. thanks for your suggestions....i'll have to look into those resources!!
  18. My 10th grade ds wants to study Russian as his foreign language!! I thought...why not! But of course, I know nothing about the language. So...anyone successfully studied Russian? What INEXPENSIVE or FREE programs are available. I do not have the resources to purchase Rosetta stone or anything similar (I have the spanish...but of course he doesn't want to study that.....). Thanks,
  19. I'm trying to get a feel for the suitability of Oberlin as a potential college for my DD. She became enamored by it during college searches, and we're about to make a 14 hour round trip visit for "interview days" next week. I've seen several posts describing Oberlin as "very liberal". I'm wondering if I can get more of a feel as to what it is about it that makes it that way. Will she fit in at all...she likes to express "different views" of things, but still her worldview is Christian. She's also considering some other colleges such as Vassar and Haverford. I'm just wondering about spending the gas money and time to make the trip to Oberlin? Any info. will be helpful. Thanks
  20. Hi, My dd, a rising senior, has completed Apologia Biology and Chemistry with The Potters School. However, she does not want to take Physics. She wants to go into anthropology/archaeology in college, so her course won't require much science. I was wondering about Earth Science/Geology? Does anyone know of a high school/college course online or self-study that would be available? Do you think that this route would be acceptable? Is it good enough for acceptance into academically rigorous schools? Thanks....Darlene
  21. i wasn't charged the fee either...so Free it is!!
  22. thanks Sue....i ignored my homeschoolbuyerscoop email....went back and found it and signed up for it...its FREE with no strings attached!!
  23. Hi Just wondering...my dd 16 is a good math student, usually an A student, but she seems to be lacking some basic algebra understanding. She did Algebra 1 using Saxon....and I think she didn't get all the concepts. I don't want her to get caught later without some of this....what would you suggest for her to do for a few weeks this summer to brush up on some basic concepts (she's finished geometry and algebra 2)?
  24. Shifra....thanks for the great suggestions...i had never heard of Art Instruction Schools...i'll have to look into it!!
