  1. Anyone ever use them? If so, any opinions? Rainbow Resource has a lot of them and I am wondering what they are like and if I would need both the student and teacher books.
  2. My kids would lose a shuffle in less than a week. lol Too small for my "where did I put that" kids.
  3. Keep in mind that a lot of MP3s are fragile and may be a costly investment in the hands of a 5yo. My ds has a Fisher Price "FP3" player -- made for little kids. They have a website that you can download stories and songs, but we never used that, we just put songs he liked on it ourselves. If you want something with more memory (which you would need for books on tape), you could look at the Sandisk Sansa line of MP3s -- I got one for both my dds, when they were 6 and 9. They are less expensive and sturdier than the IPods. Just my .02. :)
  4. This is making me want to read them all! :)
  5. Thanks! I just want to make sure I spend what I need to...but no more! :001_smile:
  6. Good points. She reads above her grade level, and asked about the book after seeing part of the movie P&P...but I am trying to weed out any "mature" themes that she may not be used to.
  7. I think I have settled on Latin Prep for my 11 yo dd. For those of you who have used it, are these the items I need to get started? I am thinking of using bookdepository.com and found these items there. Latin Prep Book 1 Latin Prep Book 1: Answer Book Latin Prep Book 1: Workbook A Latin Prep Book 1: Workbook B Latin Prep Book 1: Workbook 1A and 1B Answer Book What about the audio cd? I have no Latin background, so I don't know the pronunciations, etc. Thanks!
  8. I want to echo everyone -- she will be fine! You taught her well, and she will have help along the way. I know it is easier said than done, but try not to worry. Hang in there! :)
  9. It has been ages since I read Pride and Prejudice and I can't remember if there are any parts that are inappropriate for an 11 yo. Anybody care to refresh my memory? :001_smile: Thanks!
  10. Ack! The baby kept me up too much last night and I must be TIRED! I just looked at my son's math and we are actually doing the Early Bird Start-up Science! That is the one he likes. I got confused because I knew we did not pick the kindergarten one (Child's Play Science) -- he likes the grade 1 & 2 Start-Up Science books for all the reasons I stated above. So...yes! It is a good choice, imo. Sorry!!
  11. My ds (5 at the end of Aug) sounds like he is on a similar level. We have actually been using the My Pals Are Here science books since the beginning of this year -- I know they are labeled for 3rd grade and up, and I have to read the instructions/write in the answers for many of the activities, but he likes it better. They introduce things briefly, which at this age is good because he feels a sense of accomplishment at having learned something new, but it didn't take a lot of time. :) If he is interested in the subject, we can check out library books to supplement. At this age it is more about doing what his sisters are doing (i.e., his own workbooks) than it is about an actual program. For what it's worth, we had the EB science workbooks/texts from when my dd was younger, but he just didn't like those much. (My dd didn't like them when she did them, either.) He likes MPH, though. Good luck!
  12. We have tried the workbooks, etc., and, while they do the problems, I was looking for someone to "teach" it to them so that they would understand the process better. That is why MUS intrigued me. I am NOT a math person and I just don't know if there is a way to help them "cement" the facts other than just plain old memorizing??
  13. Sue -- Would you say you need all of the manipulatives (counters) for MUS Gamma? If I were just getting it to cement the facts? Your suggestions makes me think about getting just the Teacher's Manual/DVD to help my dds firm up the basics.
  14. Ohh...I liked Eat Pray Love. Made me want to escape to a yoga retreat in India (even though I don't even do yoga -- I think I just really wanted the peace and quiet. :))
  15. Angela - thanks! What great choices...ones I would like to read/reread, too. Others have given some recommendations for the lit guides...do you mind me asking which ones you will use?
  16. Chris, Actually, I had planned on my younger kids doing SOTW Ancients -- if you don't mind posting your faves relating to Ancients, perhaps I can think of incorporating all of them together! Thanks!
  17. Thank you so much, Lori!! All of that really helps a lot!:)
  18. See if the pains go away after she eats something small and rests. It could be labor, or braxton-hicks. I had B-H several times a day from 6 months on with #4. Good luck! And congrats!
  19. Wow, Lori! Thanks for all those great resources! We will definitely be able to use some of those next year.
  20. Not necessarily. I just want to give her a taste of some great literature appropriate for her age. I will likely choose some for her and then give her a few to choose from as well.
  21. Thanks, Julie. I will start looking. :) I didn't think of looking at places like Sonlight. I did look at next year's Calvert, but I thought maybe some people would have "favorites." I am hoping to find a lit guide or something, too, for each book, from Rainbow Resource or Amazon.
  22. We are coming off three years with Calvert, where they did the choosing for me as far as literature. Any suggestions for some great books for my 7th grade dd? (If I can rembember them, she has already read Robinson Crusoe, Shiloh, Day of the Dolphins, Swiss Family Robinson, Sign of the Beaver, Phantom Tollbooth, Number the Stars.) These would be books we would study/write about/delve deeper into, etc. As far as "recreational" reading, she has her nose in a book just about 24/7. :) Thanks!
  23. I found boy names MUCH more difficult than girl names for some reason. We had Kate all lined up for another girl, but never got to use it. :) To go with Samuel David? Hmmm...how about James Daniel (or Daniel James!) Joshua Peter Matthew James Just some ideas. Good luck! And CONGRATS!
