  1. I have one that had completed speech therapy before the palate expander. His speech was affected while having the expander in, especially at first. It was hard for him to figure out where his tongue should go. He recognized he wasn't able to speak correctly and it did frustrate him. He now has a retainer and he has resumed speaking at the level he was at before the expander without any regression.

In think I would probably just pause, especially since you said you have to drive far. I doubt they will be able to do much correction work around such an obstacle and it just seems like it would be a wasted effort/time/gas and frustrating for all involved.

  4. Thank you for starting this! It is very needed!

My ds1 (who struggles) finally got to the geometry chapter in math that just comes naturally to him. Major confidence booster.

We are counting down the days and getting super excited for our first ever family vacation. We are taking a month long road trip through several states with a mini van, a tent, and minimal camping gear. We will stay at national parks and also with some family along the way.

  5. We have one Ds that should have started with a palate expander at 7.5 but the dentist said wait. We waited and the result was fractured teeth when the 6y molars came in under baby molars that were not supposed to come out yet. The ortho said she wished we had come in sooner. He got his palate expander just after his 9th birthday. He is now in a holding pattern with a retainer as we wait for more permanent teeth to come in. Later he will need a lot more work...braces, headgear etc.

I have recently taken in DD 11.5 and DS 7.5 for a consult.

DD has much less issues and will need a spacer for just a bit to help teeth line up well as permanent molars come in. She may need a short round of braces and maybe even head gear if the spacers don't help enough to reposition the teeth to line up better. She will not get the braces and headgear until she is about 13. If the spacers do the job, she may have a choice on not having braces at all...it could end up being only cosmetic.

Poor DS 7.5 is a mess. He will be closely watched. None of his baby teeth have fallen out yet, but the xrays showed massive amounts of problems. His permanent teeth are so crowded they are piled on top of each other before they even start to come in. Ortho said she was glad I brought him in earlier. He would have had lots off issues without intervention. He will likely have some baby teeth pulled just to prevent the permanent teeth in coming in in very wrong places.

All that to say, depending on the extent of the problem, sometimes early intervention is warranted...sometimes it isnt.

  6. In my younger years when I was so naive...I said I would never use one of those!

Oh how did that come back to bite me! My first was so easy. Feared strangers, stayed right next to me, she seemed to prove I was right! Then I had more... Second was a wanderer, 3rd was a bolter, and 4th is a bolter. I have used that thing constantly when in crowded or big/dangerous places for the last 7 years.

  7. I'm intrigued by this.  Five years is a long time though!  During this time are you still able to take whatever OTC allergy stuff you want?  I assume they did allergy testing. What is your allergy to specifically?

I've had seasonal allergies forever so I'm getting kinda tired of it.

Sorry I was at an appointment.

Yes, they did an allergy test. I am allergic to dust, grasses, trees, and weeds, but the grasses were by far the worst. I chose to do grasses for the drops because they were so bad and the other things were mild.

Basically, just like allergy shots, you are given a small dose of the thing you are allergic to and you build up immunity over time. Grasses take the longest is what I have been told, up to five years, but you do feel some relief especially after the first season of doing it.  You only take the drops right before the season starts until the end the season. For grasses that is the beginning of Feb-the end of July. Then you are done until next season. It tastes a bit like sugar, not bad at all.

Yes, you can still take OTC antihistamines. I take zyrtec.

I'm in the same boat as you. I am so tired of it, but five years seemed so long. I just decided I could continue to feel dried up and drowsy from antihistamines for the next five years, or do this and feel progressively better each year.

  8. It does get better!

We have a long list here too between 4 of us:

Anaphylactic: Peanut, tree nut, shellfish, halibut

Very bad but not anaphylactic: all meats, dairy, fluoride, penicillin/molds (think bree cheese)

    Bothersome: SLS, sunflower, cucumbers

    OAS: Peaches, oranges, tomatoes

And of course add in the seasonal allergies and it gets a mess around here.

However! My DS is going through desensitization treatments for his allergy to peanuts. AND IT IS WORKING!!!! He is at the level now that he can be touched by them without reaction! There is hope!

  9. I stayed in the Desert Palms last fall. It was about a 10 min walk to Disney and you can get a room with 4 queens and 2 bathrooms pretty inexpensive (for the area anyway). The pool was just hohum, but we were at Disney the whole time so it didn't matter. It also has free breakfast that isnt bad.

We are going this year as a family for the first time and we are staying in the Park Vue Inn. 2 queens and a bunk bed. It is across the street from Disney. Again just an ok pool because the point of going for us is not the pool. It is also harder and more expensive to find a room for 6 people.

If money is not a problem, the new Courtyard Marriott Theme park entrance has a water slide park. If you are taking less than 6 people the Howard Johnson is a favorite and the pool area is supposed to be great. They do not accommodate more than 5.

  10. This happened to us many years ago. Postman's keys were stolen and the thief used them to open blue mailboxes and get out the mail. We had paid a bill with a check in one of the boxes and the check account numbers from the check were used to steal from our account. We stopped using checks entirely and have also pretty much stopped using debit cards. We have debit cards, but we rarely use them. Credit cards are the safer way to go. You are not out the money while a claim is being processed if your card is hacked as you are with the debit account. We do not use credit cards for credit, only a way to safely spend money we do actually have in the bank, and then we pay the card off before interest is incurred.

  11. I didnt get my license until right before I left for college. I was tired of feeling like the third parent in my family and knew that if I drove it would only turn me into the family taxi as well...

I doubt that is your situation! But I remember not caring about driving and getting my license.

  13. Noeo is secular... No worries. I used it for a couple of years and then switched to elemental because I liked the student pages better and noeos science experiments often didn't work out well.

I have used mm, right start, Singapore, miquon, and beast at various times with various kids. Mm is written to the student and very easy to teach with manipulatives but some kids are overwhelmed by the amount on the page. Singapore is great too but it is more expensive and has a lot of different books. My children who were overwhelmed with mm do well in Singapore because there is much less on a page. Right start is expensive too and works great for hands on IF you are not trying to use it with many children. I simply could not do this program with multiple kids..it takes a lot. Beast is fun but very challenging. It is great for Mathy kids. It doesn't follow a traditional math sequence and I use it instead of adding Singapore's extra challenging work problems and extra practice books. Miquon is more free form. I ended up ditching it because I have many students and I didn't like not having and answer key! Also...they moved from miquon to beast. I didn't need 3 maths going.

Handwriting...my kids went from hwt print to Getty dubay italics. They find handwriting challenging and looped cursive made it hard to read their writing.

    Aas and aar are awesome!

I agree with adding in wwe.
