  1. i am looking for a good arts and crafts book --not necessarily a curriculum but just good ideas to add when we get done with school early on fridays. any ideas? pam
  2. hi, I don't have much to say but i did want to respond. My daughter did both of susan's books and really would LOVE the next one to be done in time for her but..... she really enjoyed these books and history is still her favorite! I would recommend supplementing, though. The study guide would have been very helpful for me. I had my daughter write a daily summary after each chapter and that was helpful and we did a few other supplements. So if your daughter loves history, i think she will still love history after HOAW! Good luck and enjoy!! pam
  3. This may be a silling request but i am looking for a good overall language arts workbook for grade 5. I would like it to cover grammar, puntuations maybe a bit of writing and anything else that 5 graders should cover. Spelling is not that important but if it was included, fine. And writing is NOT essestial. Does anything like this exist? I am generally NOT a workbook fan, more CM but i want to try something else for one of my twins. Thanks for ANY suggestions. pam
  4. I will be using Conceptual Chemistry and I am looking for some advice. How did you grade your student, like did you create tests? Or did you use the questions in the book for tests? Did you have yours student do all of the end of the chapter questions? Also, did you use the ALIVE! Website and have them watch any of the videos.? Just looking for some ideas from someone who's been there done that! Thanks pam
  5. I am looking for this on line physics or maybe its physicalscience but it is for elementary or middle school. The program is on line but they also send you materials to build with -wheels, pulleys and such. Does anyone know what progranm/curriculum i am talking about?
  6. hi- Looking for some ideas for geometry. My daughter is good at math-has finished algebry 2. We need to do geometry and I have beenworking through TT and not overly thrilled. It is so "dry"?doesn't seem to have real life application. If i want my daughter to "just get the credit" this will do it. But if i want her to appreciate it and see how it works in real life, than NO, there has got to be something else. or am I being too picky? thought? opinions? I am not great at geometry-had a HORRIBLE teacher in high school so iwas looking for something more self teaching-or something i could learn along side her. I had considered Derek Owens (?) courses. Any other ideas pam
  7. hi- we will be trying CC in the fall doing challenge 1 for my 10th grader part time. I will be doing my own physics, math, french, bible, guitar. I will doing the rest with CC. Does anyone know if i should supplement the rest of the courses for 1? Like government, how do supplement that? The Lit. looks good, debate good, latin good, so i guess it's really jus tthe government. Any suggestions? pam
  8. i think i might have missed the homeschool buyers co op for thinkwell products, is that correct? And if I did, do you know if they will offer another time? pam
  9. Thanks so much for the replies!! Julie, you are right that is a lot of electives and I think i need to rethink that. As far as the bible, right now, our church is doing a church wide challenge of reading through the bible in a year. My daughter is keeping up with the daily readings, and attending the church sermons that are geared towards that week's reading. I LOVE it and we are working through the bible together-wow - what a difference it has made for me to know that stories in the bible and really UNDERSTAND the bible. Our church is really great!! thanks again everyone! i really appreciate it! pam

  11. I am in need of some advice for my 10th grade daughter. She won't take the SAT for another year so this next year i want to work on SAT voc. words. here are my options that I am thinking, could someone please give me their opinion. Latin/Greek voc. roots workbook type Latin -teaching the language itself Working on "just" the most comman SAT words used(i have a list of these words) Vocabulary for high school students. Obviously i can't do them all!!! pam
  12. I am hoping to hear from others as well. I have a 7th grader and wondering if I should do latin or latin roots. I didn't do either with her older sister and regret it. Now i have to play catch up next year for her. As for my 7th grader She will be doing french next year so i also don't want to overwhelm her. so here's a bump welcome to the high school board. pam
  13. just wondering if anyone has any opinion on the red wagon for chemistry, i see that you can buy the CD with the lectures or you can purchase the CD lectures directly from red wagon and have them do the grading and such. The on line course conflicts with our schedule so we can't do that. Any thoughts? Or DIVE CD is that better. guess i haven't made up my mind yet LOL!
  14. I am going to use Apologia chemistry with red wagon tutorials-does anyone know what materials will be needed. I did see the equipment set that was recommended but I didn't see a specific material/chemical set that will be needed. Does anyone know of where I can find a set that is already put together so I don't have to go searching for chemicals all year long. Thanks pam
  15. i was planning on doing chemistry for 10th grade next year-my daughter did biology this year and I just assumed we would do chem. next. Isn't that the typical order? She has had alg. 1 and alg.2 but no geometry-will be doing geometry in10th grade. Can she do chem. and ;geometry in the same year or should she wait until she is done with geometry to do the chemistry course? thanks pam
  16. I am looking for an easy to learn computer programming course that would be FuN for my soon to be 5th grader. It would be great if it was like a game, or if games were a result of the programming done. Any suggestions? pam
  17. has anyone used this resource for chemistry? Could this be a stand alone program if I add in a lab portion? thanks pam
  18. Does anyone know of a creative online type of writing course -I want to offer something fun, challenging that doesn't include mommy! pam
  19. yup-that's me-staying up all night looking at the options and trying to figure it all out---and I have just one in high school!! but one right behind her and two following that and the money.......ouch!!! that's what is causing me to use the pepto!!! Just wanted to say thanks to the 2nd poster -forgot name and too tired to look back-for putting my mind at ease! I love the idea of only one outside class-LOVE that idea!!! Time, money, books, stress, someone else's agenda-all that i feel stressed about when we do outside classes. I can handle one, and my daughter likes them.......but my pocketbook says one is enough! pam
  20. so what is a good score on ACT for math? we haven't gotten there yet? just curious as we haven't figured out geometry yet for my daughter and had thought of LOF awhile back. pam
  21. i am looking for some labs for my 10th grader. She is not going to major in sciences and we did quite a lot of experiments/labs in biology this year, even the dissections!!! I am no idea what lab kid to order- it looks like a lot of people use labpaq. I am planning on using the flexbook ck-12 chemistry, possibly the TC chemistry to work on the math component and then some labs. Any suggestions? thanks pam
  22. hi- I am looking for some ideas/advice for my 5th grade boys. They have done some ancient egypt and some early american history and that's about it-bits and pieces here and there. I have used SL, a little of SOTW, Charlotte Mason, and HOD. So...i need to decide-i could get in a full four year rotation before high school, starting at the greeks. Would SOTW be too young now? What do people use their 2nd time around for this age? Or i could continue with american history for another 1 1/2 years with SL and then go back and pick up ancients and middle ages. I guess my main question is what do people use when they reach 5th grade and want to start a 4 year rotation? Just need some ideas. I don't want "box" curriculum-been there......something with just history, geography and possibly literature. Really would appreciate any advice thanks pam
  23. Thanks for all the great suggestions-i will be busy looking. We have done the snap circuits a few years back and have done almost all of the kits!!!my son was obssessed with them for awhile!! pam
  24. i am looking for a good science program for 5th grade boys who like experiments-LOVE experiments. Can't say i like experiments, though. Anyways, did Christian Kids explore... last year and for awhile it was ok but became kinda boring. We have tried Sonlight Science but didn't like that either. Would love some ideas to explore! thanks pam
  25. I have twin soon to be 5th graders and I am not sure if i should do R.S. english 4 or 5. We did bits of level 3-they know nouns, predicates and how to diagram this. But that is about all. They know about adjectives/adverbs and we covered pronouns but they woulndn't know it by name if asked. Any suggestions-don't want them to be bored but don't want to miss anything important by doing 5. FWIW they are very conscious of "grade level" like to be doing the "5th" book if they are in 5th grade. thanks jean
