  8. I am looking for some ideas and/or curriculum for 6th grade science. Up to now, we have done just acitivities and such-not much but they have done a lot on their own (11 year old twin boys). I want something more organized this year, but something that is hands on with not too much writing. I really don't know what is out there and don't even know where to start. So I would appreciate anything!!!! Thanks pam
  9. Oh my gosh, there are sooo many study guides and "free" things and secret books and so forth. How do I choose which study guide to buy for my 11th grade daughter? can I get some recommendations? thanks so much--I know I can always come here and my panic subsides!! thanks to all you wise ladies~ pam
  10. Hi, thanks so much for this course!! I plan to use it as written; except I have one question about the John Adams DVD. You have it listed at 501 minutes. Is it really that long? 8 1/2 hours long? I am not sure that we could fit that in for 1 week! Did you really watch that DVD for 8 1/2 hours? Thanks again, you have saved the day for me! pam
  11. I will try to make this short: my soon to be 6th grade twins had done most of school in the CM methods. They started written narrations last year, but could use some more work on that. BUT I am switching mid stream to more classical using lots of TWTM ideas. we will be staring TOG next year, but do our own writing. So i need some suggestions about our curriculum. Math we are set on. But writing:: I was thinking of WWE 3 next year and the skipping WWE 4 and going into WWS in 7th. They have done short dictation and 8 sentnece written narrations last year. Also have done IEW -about 1/2 way through But i thought WWS might be too tough-WHAT DO YOU THINK? Grammar: I was thinking Analytical Grammar since my other two kids have done this. But then I heard about MCT and was thinking about that. What are the pros/cons of MCT? (We made it through 3 chapters of Rod and Staff 5 last year) Science ; We are doing Elemental Science: Earth Science/Astronomy- I am fine with this Latin: Starting with Memoria Press- I am fine with this We will also do spelling for one, since he is pretty bad. And vocabulary. Could someone give me some feedback-especially on the WWE and Grammar. Thanks pam
  12. Hi, I have order the Teaching Company/Great courses U.S. History CD and want to use this for 16 year old. She will also be taking the CLEP tests after she is done going through the tapes but I would like to add a few additional resources. I really don't know where to start. She has read a lot of the primary resources about the government and that time period last year, and also did American literature last year. I would REALLY like some help coming up with a few additional ideas. thanks for any help pam
  13. Hi, My daughter has taken French 1 and 2 at TPS and will be taking 3 next year. It is a lot of work, but she really does like it. On average, i would estimate that she spent 4-5 hours weekly on French, plus the class itself. Some weeks might have been more with test and or projects. My daughter took the conversations in year 1 and then not in year 2. She found that since she had a a little exposure to French before Year 1, she really didn't need the conversations course. (She went through almost 1 year with Rosetta Stone in 8th grade). I would be happy to answer any other questions you may have. FWIW, my second daughter is taking French next year at potters but will be taking the slower track-she will earn only .5 credit for the year. She didn't think she could handle the work in the regular class. However, she is not your "typical" high school school. you could think about that option if you are concerned about keeping up.
  14. My daughter wants to CLEP for U.S. History and I am looking for the best materials or book that will help her before she actually studies for the CLEP test. Does anyone have any suggestions? pam
  15. I am looking to outsource writing for my 11th grade daughter. She has basic knowledge of composition, but could just use work on literary essays, research projects and general composition skills. With 4 other kids, I need to outsource some things. thanks for any suggestions- pam
  16. Well.... I am in the same boat. I think what I am going to do is have them listen to it on CD --and not do written narrations every time. Though my kids are a lot older and are just doing it for reinforcement;they did other things as well. But I wanted them to read through SOTW too. So.....long story but listening to a CD might break it up for both you and the kids?
  17. I would ask on the high school board. Just an idea since nobody here is answering. pam
  18. Hi, I am wondering when you began using analytical grammar-like what grade. I started my oldest in 7th, but she was very bright. My next I started in 8th grade and she is doing well. I was wondering if anyone has ever started in 6th grade. is that too early? I have twin 6th grade boys next year- thanks pam

  21. Hi, I am asking once again for the wisdom of those who have gone before me. My daughter needs and wants an online writing course for 9th grade. She knows basic paragraphs but has not really done essay writing yet. ?She is a bit behind and we may do a 5 year plan with her because of it. ?Regardless, I think she could handle an Intro course to either composition or a lit./composition course. Cost is not a big factor. She has suggested Brave Writer but I don't know about the quality of their courses. Any suggestions? pam
  22. Hi, I am looking for an online course for French 1 for my 14 year old daughter. My oldest has done French at Potter school but i am not sure this daughter could handle the rigor of that. She is really inbetween middle school and high school as she just turned 14 yesterday! And I am not sure --we may do a 5 year high school with her. But anyways, just looking for a gentle introduction class for her. Any ideas? Thanks pam
  23. I am starting to plan for next year and I was really wanting to start next year with my 6th grade twins using the methods of The Well trained mind book. I have always had a curriculum to follow so i wanted to do something different next year. BUT, i realized that doing history ala TWTM we would miss the integration of biblical events, which are important to me. And I guess not just events in the bible but the people as well. So.......just anyone have ideas of a program that incorporates TWTM objectives along with biblie? or ideas of how to incorporate bible with TWTM? pam
  24. Can someone give me some ideas of what kind of math credit my daughter should do: she has complete algebra 1 and 2 and geometry. She will be a junior so has two more years. We do want her to do a personal finance course-would that count as an elective or as a math credit? Most likely, she is not going to do STEM in college-though she has no idea what she wants to do. I am open to anything though something that is not too rigorous would be best. thanks pam
  25. Hi, I have not used the Saxon curriculum at all but next year, my daughter is interested in taking the Advanced Mathematics course with Saxon. I don't know anything a bout it-is it considered pre-calculus? Does anyone have any other information that they can share about this course? Thanks pam
