    It was deeply disturbing to watch him become more and more troubled over the years. To witness him fall into trouble with the law in his teenage years, and finally to learn he'd murdered a woman and gone to prison.

     

    So, yes I've seen it firsthand. It was brutal, ugly and wrong. And I wish I could have stopped it. Do I think this is "typical" of child rearing in any segment of our society? Mercifully, no.

     

    To discuss the questions I have about the Bible (especially when it comes to interpretations I don't fathom) is a potentially great topic of discussion for the future but the time is a little short for me today and I don't have an adequate concise answer.

    Thank you for responding to my questions. I'm sorry your friend suffered so much. It did not have to be that way.

     

    I would love to discuss with you any topic concerning scriptures out of the Bible. When you have the time, please let me know what is on your mind.

     

    Sometimes it's tough to discuss important issues in a forum because a discussion can go off on a tangent. But I have enjoyed hearing everyone's opinion. It helps me to know what people are thinking about and what they believe.

    The OP's question will never be able to be debated fully with those who use the bible to support their premise against those who do not believe the bible is to be taken 100% literally. It will (and has) digress into one side "preaching" to the other side. Interjecting quotes to convince is only effective if both sides agree as to the authority of the source.

     

    Just letting you know that using the bible to support an argument may be ineffective.

    Please let me know what authority you use?

     

    Why can't we hold a debate if you use your authority and I use the Bible as mine?

     

    After all, don't people hold opposing views in debates?

     

    By the way, I am not against you or any other person here. I am enjoying the discussion. I wish Bill would come back and answer my questions.

    I'm so glad Audrey and Bill joined this discussion. I've been waiting for them. I am going to throw a question out for Audrey first:

     

     

    actually the whole idea of "sin" if you want to get right down to it... is the biggest load of poo I ever seen. And, I've seen some huge lagoons of poo out here in hog country.

     

    I just believe people are better than that. Exceptions excluded, hence the need for laws to handle the exceptions.

     

    Since you don't like the idea or the word "sin", what do you call it when people do bad things? What should we call it? If not sin? Or are you saying that there is no sin? Please clarify to me what you are saying. You have made some general statements against the Bible and Christians without any substance to back it up.

     

     

    Now, to Bill:

     

     

    Too many children being raised by parents who tell them they are sinful and evil natured from the womb?

    You seem to know a lot of negative things about Christian parenting. How often do you see Christian parents tell their kids they are evil?

     

    Just as Cindy mentioned, how do you know me?

     

    Just like Audrey, you make general statements against Christians without much to back it up.

  4. I believe in the concept of Original Sin -- that we are all born with a sinful nature -- begun in the Garden of Eden with Adam & Eve. "In Adam's Fall, We Sinned All", as the old saying goes.

     

     

    Romans 3:22-24

     

    This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference,

    for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

    and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

    The other lady had harsh words. You need encouragement. I know what it's like to care for your ill/dieing loved ones with a busy schedule.

     

    I will be praying that the Lord would give you the grace to do your best in caring for your father.

  6. Please switch therapists if you can. There has to be someone out there who is supportive of homeschooling.

    If this therapist is so judgmental and quick to speak against homeschooling, which he knows very little about, how can one trust him with his other opinion?

     

    Is he not aware of negative socialization?

    I will be praying that the Lord would lead you to the right therapist who can truly help your son move forward instead of discouraging and belittling you.

     

  7. Just as Strider mentioned this in her post, I encourage you to introduce him to a godly man who loves the Lord. He needs to be in a Bible study with someone who can show him the love of Christ.

     

    Perhaps other than you and your husband he has never been loved before. I did not have a rough life like your nephew, but I know the Lord and His word (the Bible) changed my life.

     

    There is Bible Study Fellowship all over the U.S. for free. They have men's and women's groups on Monday nights as well as Wednesdy mornings.

     

    If you would like more information, I can contact their headquarters and see if they have a Bible study in your area. It is a life changing study. I will certainly be in prayer for him and your family.

  8. If the book is worth $28 and she bought is for $14 and there is nothing wrong with the book other than the fact that the binding is weak in the middle, then I say she got a great deal.

    She can take it to a shop where they can fix the binding and/or punch holes in it and place it in a binder. She can also tape those pages.

    The weather is cold; the binding could have become weak as a result of cold weather.

    She cannot expect a brand new book at a used price. That is the bottom line.

    Do not worry about your son. Chances are great that he does not care about those things. They are not a priority to him.

     

    What is important to him? Does he learn quickly the details to a project or subject that is dear to him?

     

    I find that my dc learns very quickly the things that are important to him/her, and yet drags his/her feet in a subject where I think he/she should be putting more effort.

     

    Biology is a horse of a different color in its own. We have all been given certian gift/gifts by the Lord. Some are predestined to become biologists, and/or doctors. I wasn't. There is no way I can memorize those words in biology. I was given a different gift.

     

    Yet, I know it is good to study biology and try very hard to learn what is presented in the book. I have one child who has to go over the biology material four (4) times in writing and orally before he/she can get it (this presents a problem because we don't have a lot of time). I have another one who spits out the answer without reading the related material in the biology textbook.

     

    One of the beauties of homeschooling is that we can help our children identify their gifts and interests by allowing them to experiment with different subjects and ideas.

     

    BTW, the first day I went to a new highschool, I got lost walking home and I was 16. However, that experience didn't make me think I am slow or need to be treated differently. I went on to major in Information Systems in college and did quite well.

    I will pray that your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ will increase each and everyday just as I pray the same for myself. I will also pray for your relationship with your husband.

     

    We are called to serve Him obediently because He knows the big picture. We see only the picture given to us today (a very small picture indeed).

     

    As I read the book of Revelation, I am reminded how much I need to trust Him. The Lord has called us to love Him and trust Him each and everyday. The outcome is in His hands. He knows exactly what He is doing. Even when bad things happen.

     

    There are days when I trust Him with somethings and I want to control somethings myself instead of turning them over to Him. I have come to undrestand that when I make decisions based on fear, I end up regretting the decision. When I trust Him, I make a decision that is more inline with His will. Then I don't regret that decision.

    For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.

    We are having -4 weather here today. I will be praying that the Lord would provide for all that you need to keep your farm working. That somehow the Lord would bring a friend to take you shopping for the presents.

     

    I keep a journal of my prayer requests and am always in awe of how the Lord cares for me above and beyond what I ask of Him.

  12. I am using Warriner's English Grammar and Composition copyright 1977. We are on the fourth course. The complete course was meant for the 12th grade. However, my friend who recommended it to me told me that some colleges use the Complete Course because it can be college level depending on the copyright date.

     

    She also told me the older versions are better than the newer ones.

     

    I don't think you can use it instead of the 3rd or 4th course.

  13. When you pull kids from ps, it is beneficial to take a break for a few weeks or longer before you start homeschooling. Take a month off from schooling and just read to the kids, play board games, do art, and go on field trips. It will serve a few purposes at the same time. It will get ya'll acquainted with each other again; it will help you to get a feel for what each knows and how they learn; it will reininforce for everyone that home is the important part of homeschooling.

     

     

     

    We did take time off and read books for a month before setting up our homeschool schedule. I did this by accident, because I had to wait till the books arrived. So I decided to read to them while we waited for the homeschooling books. To this day they talk about what a wonderful time we had when I read to them. We also enjoy reading the Bible to each other.

     

    I hope this helps. Whatever you do, don't give up. This phase shall pass. She is testing your boundries. Let her know who is in charge in subtle ways.
