  2. I’m finally back home. My mom’s surgery went well. I, however, am EXHAUSTED. I think I might order the SAT stuff and go to bed! I’ll get up early in the morning to prep co op.
  3. YES! The Hiding Place is one of my favorite books of all times! I’ve actually read it aloud to my girls, but I should have dd reread it!
  4. I have not. I’ve always wanted to, though. My dd is doing a fairly in-depth study of WWII. I’ve read chapter one and so far, so good.
  5. Added to my “am reading” list: Farewell to Manzanar, for dd13’s history studies.
  6. Morning Star Farms black bean burgers (spicy black bean burgers?) are good. I buy them at Sam’s. I think I’ve also seen them at Publix.
  7. I’ve all but quit reading Christian fiction, but two authors I have enjoyed (besides Rivers) are Athol Dickson and Jamie Langston Turner. They’re very different—Dicksons are more adventuresome while Turner’s are more “cozy” with a big literary bent (she’s an English professor).
  8. I had forgotten how good the Penderwicks is! I’ve been very surprised by how invested my little boys are in the story, too. Thanks for the recommendation on the memoir-ish book. I can’t think of any more like this immediately, but I’ll continue to ruminate on it. ☺️ I do love a good memoir!
  9. Anybody else struggling with the time change? 😓 Today is my mom’s surgery day, so my reality may look very different from my plan. Last night I got next to nothing done. I was overwhelmed and just whiled away my time instead of focusing and getting things done. Today: Coffee! Quiet time ✅ get kids’ school together and decide if it’s possible to get the boys’ school done before leaving before lunch on this post-time change Monday (partially done) clear table of school mess (partially done) shower and dress for day ✅ MUST DECIDE WHAT TO DO WITH PORK ROAST IN REFRIGERATOR (I’m yelling at myself): cook or freeze? kid wrangling get CC stuff together ✅ school with boys and prod girls along (partial) take kids to Nana’s before lunch✅ Run by grocery store? Credit union ✅ hospital for mom’s surgery (prayers appreciated) ✅ be available at hospital for whatever my parents need—errands, care, etc.✅ teach CC class✅ go back to hospital?✅ home to prep co op order SAT tests for co op collapse Happy Monday!
  10. I don't think it's caring for the skin vs. caring for other organs. It's more a fact of sort of not thinking about what we're putting on our skin. (At least that's the way it is for me.) I came at this through the back door of hair care as I explored letting my hair do its thing via the curly girl method, so I don't consider myself well informed about skincare at all. I did find this article online (which is admittedly one-sided, so know that I realize this!--ha!) that might shed some light on the subject.
  11. Well, things haven't gone exactly as planned. Ha! We boarded my dd13's dog at the vet while we were gone to the beach, and we got a call that we could pick her up today. It takes about an hour to get out to the vet's office and back home, so that added yet another hitch into my already crazy feeling day. But she's home and we're all happy about that! Now it's time for me to get serious about prep for the week (and laundry!) I'm going to make a cup of decaf coffee and get at it. Happy Sunday!
  12. I'm a complete newbie, but because the skin is our largest organ, it's important to keep some unhealthy ingredients off our skin if at all possible.
  13. @Negin , I just hopped over and read your Nicholas and Alexandra review that @tuesdayschildlinked. (Thanks for that!) I really want to read it now! Many long years ago, I taught world history in public school, and the Russian Revolution was one of my favorite things to introduce to my students. So sad!
  14. Hello, all-- Last week I finished a few books, but I will list them here again so as to be more concise (a problem for me 😉. I'll also link to the reviews I've written on my blog. I feel like I've done something huge by dipping back into blogging again. It has been so long (too long!) since I've written about the books I've read, and I've missed it. My brain needs to do this. Resilient by Rick Hanson, Ph.D.--my review here The Clockmaker's Daughter by Kate Morton--my review here Finished but unreviewed: The Penderwicks at Point Mouette by Jeanne Birdsall (read aloud; re-read for me) {I shared my original thoughts about it here when it first came out in 2011, if anyone is interested in going back that far.} The Most They Ever Had by Rick Bragg--a book of essays/articles about the textile industry in northeast Alabama and its decline and the effect on the people who worked in the mills; so good! I also went back and started re-reading A Long Obedience in the Same Direction by Eugene Peterson, and I've decided to blog my way through it at the rate of (I hope!) a chapter a week. Here's the first installment. Currently reading: the fourth book in the Penderwick series to my boys, The Penderwicks in Spring. Code Name Verity with my 13 yo, if this super busy week will allow me a smidgen of time Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive by Stephanie Land -- a memoir, very engrossing so far A Long Obedience, as mentioned above Currently listening: Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport via Scribd--I can see how this book could create a watershed moment for me, should I let it. I have decided to participate in the Brit Trip Adventure challenge, even though I barely understand what I'm doing. Ha! The Clockmaker's Daughter is apparently set in Gloucestershire, so I'm attempting the Fosse Way schedule. (Is this how this works?) On a related note, I came across this very interesting blog while researching the counties of England. Have you all seen it? The Booktrail Last, I don't think I understand the book bingo thing. Is there somewhere for me to read up a bit more? Sometimes I can be a bit thick-headed. 😅
  15. Thank you all! I ended up buying Pur today at Kohl’s because I had Kohl’s Cash to spend so it seemed like a good way to experiment. I am noting all the recommendations and will be coming back to revisit this as I experiment. (I feel like a 45 year old teenager! Lol)
  16. @SelkieMy dh was supposed to go to Chicago for a meeting back in Jan or Feb when the temps were 50 below and ended up stranded at the Atlanta airport, unable to get a flight out. He ended up coming back home.
  17. Oh, my, Selkie! Where do you live? (You don’t have to answer if you don’t want.) I’m so glad y’all made it home safely!
  18. Well, I posted my list when I woke up in the wee hours and couldn’t go back to sleep. Then I went back to sleep and overslept! Drat you, time change! So that means my best laid plans have already gone awry.
  19. That’s so. . .interesting! I don’t quite know what to think about it.
  20. That’s a great way to be proactive! I’ve tried eating low carb and even LCHF but always eventually fall off the wagon.
  21. So the potential for uninterrupted sleep woke you up. 😝 I think knowledge that it’s actually an hour earlier than the clock says now is making me anxious about being awake.
  22. Thanks for waking me up to tell me you can’t sleep, dd! 😝
