  1. We are moving back to PA this coming summer after 10 years in WA State... to Schuylkill or Berks county... main attraction is 9th grade son wants to be involved in JROTC at local school... anyone have any experience with either Reading or Pine Grove Area HS? Their JROTC program? Either school in general? Also homeschool groups meeting in either area? I am contemplating still homeschooling my youngest, DS 12 yrs old (as a single mom, sometimes I long for a break - it breaks my heart when thinking I will possibly be stopping) If so, we will be looking for a homeschool band, dance club - performing arts studios? P.S. I will be listing 1000's of HS/Christian faith, etc books in the near future. I need 50 posts and time to take lots of pics :001_huh:
  2. Thank you so much - just what I needed! PMing you for other resources if you don't mind sharing :auto:
  3. Same company also offers SpellDoctor looks like a great program too!
  4. :lurk5: I just "liked" them on facebook! Want to glean as much as I can before we buy but looks like people like us would end up being their reviewers. Word Voyage was founded in 2010 and product is too new for the reviews we are looking for. I believe we are going to go ahead and use it because I have yet to find a vocabulary course that will build in such a brilliant way. We used the Critial Thinking Company, Word Roots but it does not cover near as much fundamentals of language. I think the extra work WV put into their product will help the info to stick and make learning word roots/vocab fun. At least I am interested, maybe just for myself ;) And they offer a 30 day trial.
  5. We have finally decided that we are going to start Science with a Astronomy & Earth Science course :) We will be using a secularprogram and AiG plus all sorts of supplemental goodies. However, I am not sure about a purchasing a telescope. Would love to hear what you are doing about real life experiences with space... While searching we noticed http://www.slooh.com SLOOH is a live-cam highpowered telescope and interactive space study for kids and adults. In case you are interested ($25.99 @ Science Channel for one-year membership which is 50% special). Has anyone used this - reviews seem good though I would prefer more current and notable feedback. :bigear: Then again, we continued to search and saw another live broadcast http://www.spacevidcast.com though not quite the same experience. Thank you for your time ~ as I learned last night when I purchased an e-book "I certainly missed something" and know I could have spent our funds better elsewhere... :001_huh:
  6. We enjoy using Ancient Civilizations & the Bible by Diana Waring (a little advanced but since we will be studying Ancient times in a few years we will be able to return to these rich book/audio tapes to grasp an even deeper meaning to this time period).
  7. We really like Excellence in Spelling (The Phonetic Zoo) - the philosophy behind their teaching style is to train the brain to think how to spell rather then to picture it... hence, as one goes onto higher learning he/she will refer to their audio lessons, remembering jingles and other methods to help them spell. I love it (since it gives me a break) all lessons have a flashcard to teach/study from and test are given via audio until mastered two consecutive times. As far as teh boys (9/11) go; they are motivated to pick up the remote and take their daily spelling test every time I ask!! We are a little behind since this is our first year teaching from home, with that being said these lessons should work for advanced 2nd or 3rd graders. So, it is a win/win for us! I believe you can go to excellenceinspelling.com and watch a media player clip on the program.
  8. (wrote a nice long message the other day and it vanished right before my eyes...) Anyways, I must thankyou all so much - I am liking the idea of Earth Science for our first year!! Never thought of that :D The boys would love a telescope - what recommendations does anyone have considering quality/price?
  9. Hi everyone! We just officially started homeschooling this year... and after a few attitude adjustments (to include my own) now in November we are truly enjoying ourselves and having the time of our lives!! So glad we made this decision. Anyways, I was given some great advice to work on History vs. Science at the beginning of the year. Well, we chose History: #1 seems more economical and #2 I did not seem so oblivious of where to begin with Science (so many choices and want what was best for us) And now 2nd half of year is dawning (already!!!) and I am looking for some advice on curriculum: I am teaching both children the same subject - where do I start considering their ages and the core subjects/scientific learning processes have barely been introduced to them? Chemistry? Biology? Physics? We need to use a non-creation based curriculum for the base of our studies - have any suggestions? However will be purchasing creation-based (possibly Apologia) to accompany - any suggestions? Anyone who read/used Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding (Nebel) feel it is a good starting point for me to get a crash course on Science? if not, is there such a book available? My goal is to find something that fits our liking and learning style with challenging topics to research and work through projects. Maybe I should add ~ We love hands on! TIA ~ Have a wonderful day today; hopefully living life to its fullest! Our kids are watching
  10. Newbie here... looking for some friends. I have 2 sons in 4th and 6th grade. Would love to be able to meet and share our approaches to schooling and have some daytime friends for the boys - field trips, co-ops anything I am missing. We are in the Puyallup area but are willing to :auto: Looking forward to meeting you all soon.
  11. Thank you so much - a true delight for a new homeschooler of 2 boys; 4th & 6th graders!! Feeling totally overwhelmed this summer, prayerfully attempting to complete the most frugal and uniquely designed courses one can find. Needless to say, my children love to learn so I have my work cut out for me... I hope I can keep up with them. :)
