  1. Thank you for that input, that is very helpful. I watched the snippet video they had with who I am assuming would be the live Biology instructor and I wasn’t overly blown away…
  2. So two votes for the chemistry/physics classes (both of which are taught by Dr. Wile I believe) but no takers on biology (I think this is taught by someone else). Did they do lab reports every week in chemistry and physics? Did you posters above take the honors classes?
  3. I do like the look of their classes, but didn’t notice they have a summer one?
  4. Title says it all. Any recommended summer or video based programs that have been well received and enjoyed?
  5. Would you then count the class at CLRC as history/lit combo then? Or history/lit/writing?
  6. You guys, this is so helpful, thank you. I will really have to consider work load for her after all your thoughts. She is in two online classes now (HS Latin 1 with CLRC) and Integritas Academy writing and has done an online class one a year for the two years before that. At least the online format wouldn’t be new for her. We unfortunately live in rural-ville USA in the midwest. The closest official HS group is an hour away. Opportunities for club sports, activities, etc are slim pickings. I like the idea of a half credit in the summer though, and starting the year a “half credit ahead.”
  7. @Lori D. I ALWAYS greatly appreciate any posts where you weigh in, thank you!!! I wish she had some long term goals in mind! We talk about this but she’s just soft, gentle, sort of go-with-the-flow and hasn’t found anything that she REALLY claims she enjoys more than anything else. Other than reading. She just likes to read! And German, she is firmly set on wanting to learn German. I have a mind for languages myself, and she’s taking CLRC High School Latin 1 now quite easily which makes me think she might have the same wiring for picking up languages. For these reasons, I kind of don’t want to steer her away from German this year. She is currently working through Getting Started with German on her own so I’m hoping that with that as a decent intro to the language she won’t flounder terribly in German 1 for HS. With that extra background, what recommendations would you have regarding the schedule above? Just not add in an elective since that would kind of be what she is wanting “extra”?
  8. Long term goals are for her to be well prepared enough to get into a solid college (likely/possibly Christian) if she chooses that route. If she finds something she loves that would be better taught at a tech/trade school I’m perfectly ok with that, but want her prepared to handle a good college if desired. Ultimately I want her to learn how to learn good works, and to love learning.
  9. Yes, she’ll be taking Algebra 1 and is an average but not stellar math student so I thought it would be best to hold off on physics for her.
  10. Yes, the outsourcing from multiple providers is not ideal, I agree. I would have liked that to have been more compact. I’ll have to think if there is a way I could find more from perhaps WHA. I did consider DO for math but she specifically requested live components, which I think for her is going to be better for learning anyway. I have picked through the pinned threads here and there (too much to do at one time!!) and they are extremely helpful. And yes, we are fully committed to no brick and mortar school, so that at least isn’t a concern for me.
  11. Yes, Duolingo is used here but not on a daily daily basis unfortunately! We should use that more heavily…. And the language camp sounds like an awesome idea, I’ll have to keep that in mind!
  12. Good questions, I should have clarified. She’s motivated as far as I can tell, has chosen German herself, and is working through Getting Started With German on her own this year. I’m hoping she’ll be close to done with it by school starting next fall.
  13. Anyone with experience in Jay Wile’s online Biology class? I know he’s revamping his current text book line up, is this class using a new one yet? What was the work load like? Did you choose to do the Honors class (meaning full experiments, etc)? Why or why not? Any thoughts about this would be very appreciated.
  14. Sigh. This whole planning for HS is way more stressful than even I thought it would be! Could some of you with experience either with these classes or planning HS in general critique what I have possibly in mind? Specific questions would be: is the work load going to be too much for a solid or slightly above average 9th grader? Does she need a separate “writing” course if she’s in a GC course with WHA? I never thought I’d be going all outsourced for EVERY subject in HS but the way life is going it might have to happen - how can we make that the most successful use of the funds as possible? 1 credit - Math: Algebra 1 online with Jann in Texas 1 credit - German: CLRC (?, open to suggestions) German 1 2.5 credits (History/Lit/Theology) - Great Conversation 1+4 with Vierra (leaning towards him?) at WHA 1 credit - Science: Unfortunately, undecided. She’s not really STEM, WHA does Physics first which she could do but I’ve heard such wonderful things about Clover Creek Physics that I’d really like to have her try that one in 10th…. So Biology first? I don’t know? With who? I was thinking maybe Berean Builders online, I suppose I could go back and check that out again… I’m thinking another credit (at least?) is needed - what would that be, Logic? (If so, with who) Writing? Both? Yikes… PLEASE, any thoughts or knowledge would be so appreciated! ETA: Ok, second round, does this look any better? 1 credit - Math: Algebra 1 with Jann in Texas (online) 1 credit - German: CLRC German 1 (online) 1 credit - Composition: Integritas Academy Lit and Comp for Underclassmen (online) 1 credit - Biology: FundaFunda Academy Biology 1 (asynchronous, but deadlines) 2 credits - History/Lit Roman Roads Greeks at home (streaming/asynchronous, no outside deadlines) .5 credit - Elective: CLRC Beginning Drawing For those who know the workloads, does this look any more doable?? I’m thinking taking a Great Books class back to home will give us a bit more flexibility with those credits as far as stretching it out if needed. She requested the art class as her elective.
  15. I’ve been leaning towards CLRC German 1 next year for DD in 9th. Any other recommendations on platforms or instructors you are currently loving? At least right now she’s planning on doing German all the way through HS so a program that goes at least 3 years would be helpful.
  16. Yes, I did actually email her with some questions and she told me the same, to contact her early next year to be on her waiting list for the following. Thanks!!
  17. I guess I do need to add that DD will be taking Algebra 1 next year and Jetta looks like she wants that completed before taking her class, so maybe we’ll keep it around for 10th grade!
  18. Well, very very good to know about Jetta‘s class then!!! Thank you very much for that reassurance!!
  19. @calbear, very helpful, thanks! Another website to check out…. 🙂. The Intro to Great Books says for grades 7-9. Does this mean it could or could not count as a 9th grade History/Lit dual credit? I’m trying to figure out how credits play out in HS. That VPSA Intro Logic looks interesting for my next boy, maybe I’ll check that out for him… She is definitely not a STEM kid, so much as I’ve read stellar things about Clover Creek, that, unfortunately, would not likely be a good fit for her. Buggers.
  20. So I’ve been seriously considering WHA classes for DD who will be 9th this fall. We would use perhaps GC 1+4, Physics 1 (I think they start with physics first, but I’ve looked at so many places recently they’re running together), and considering either the Fundamentals of Academic Writing (she’s in Cindy Lange’s Intro to Persuasive Writing now and pulling a B, mostly due to late assignments) or Advanced Comp 1. Also tossing around Logic as a possibility. I’m thinking I’ll try Jann in Texas for Algebra next year. She wants German as language so will likely use CLRC as she’s taking HS Latin 1 with them now. I don’t know how I think about so many online classes but with my work schedule it’s just kind of looking like I’m needing to outsource all of HS for the most part. I also want her to get the best education she can get and I’m afraid that might not come from me. My question is, after perusing WHA site: Have you had a solid average student do well at WHA? I guess I’m just overwhelmed by the caliber of students in the sample classes and I worry that what if she will be the “under performer.” I would hope that having her in those classes would help her rise to the equivalent caliber, but I’m just a bit skittish! Also, if I went this route with WHA I would likely consider continuing her with 3 classes or so a year to fulfill the Diploma Program requirements. Is there benefit to this, or is there really not? Any thoughts from families who have BTDT would be greatly appreciated, on this topic or on the classes I mentioned above.
  21. All this is very helpful, thank you!
  22. I’m considering switching from glasses to contacts after my next eye appt. I have insurance for the eye exam but it does not cover contacts, though. I’m sure getting them from this particular office is going to be much speedier than other options out there. I am wondering if there are any reputable sources for ordering contact lenses online, and how best to go about doing this. Any suggestions or sources that you’ve used you would recommend (or not?)?
  23. Preventing GBS infection (or at least reducing the likelihood) of it can be helped by two specific strains of probiotics. Just lactobacillus (random strains) might not cut it. The two specific strains she should look for in a probiotic are Reuteri and rhamnosus. It can be challenging finding a probiotic that has both, but they are out there. I would highly recommend she find one and start it, especially if they are wanting to get pregnant soon as GBS in pregnancy can change birth plans (depending of course on the provider. Midwives are generally more open to alternative treatments, even in cases of hx of GBS colonization). As nasty as antibiotics go, it’s hopefully going to help now, and then she can focus on prevention (as mentioned above with D-mannose, uva Ursi tea, good probiotics, etc. Cutting sugars in general is a good idea.). That stinks for her. I hope she’s able to nip it in the bud.
  24. I love threads like this, but the bank account doesn’t…!
  25. It seriously makes me laugh how slow styles are to hit out here. Ok, deep sixing my tall boots, I guess!
