  1. For anyone looking for the whole set I really recommend sigining up at oup.com for the email list. In the spring they had a discount to get the set for $104 before shipping. Don't know if it will still work but you can try type in 28514 in the promo code box before putting the set in your cart. Hope it helps someone.:001_smile:

  2. I have a problem though....I want to use them all! I am interested in these titles. (dd will be in 4th)

    Building Thinking Skills

    Reading Detective

    Science Detective

    Math Detective

    Editor In Chief

Word Roots (maybe this would be more suitable to start next year???)

Too much? Maybe I don't need them all. I was thinking I could have her do one software title per day while I work with my younger ds. If I did it this way, she would be doing one lesson per week per book. I was thinking this would get me through the books within the school year. Is this correct? Well, with the exception of BTS and Word Roots. I believe those two are to cover a wide span of grades. Any advice would be appreciated. These all look so good!

    Thanks,

    Sandy

:lurk5: I've been thinking on the same thing. Got my Critical Thinking catalog and can't figure out which ones to NOT do with my 4th grader.:001_smile:

  3. I read a very interesting book this weekend called A Handbook for Mathematics Teachers in Secondary Schools from Singapore Math. It discusses common mistakes made by students in various secondary math topics. It has math game ideas for Algebra and beyond. It focuses on teaching students to recognize patterns and cluster those patterns together for problem solving. It was a great read. It has me reconsidering using Singapore for high school.

Thank you. I'll look for that.:001_smile:

  4. Thank you for all the replys. I'm very relieved to know that other people have used the NEM and it didn't ruin their children.;) Sticking with Singapore is something I'm determined to do.:001_smile:

We do have the Key to books that he can do, I've never looked at the Zaccaro but would love to hear more about them.:001_smile:

  5. This is something that came up in a post I did on the K-8, but I thought I should ask here. We always figured after 6b we'd use NEM because we love Singapore Math, but in reading it seems like most people move away from singapore math then. Is there any reason not to go ahead and use NEM after 6b? Has anyone gone all the way through NEM? Pros cons? What did you do for 11th and 12th grade? :001_smile: Thanks.

  6. I believe it is because the US math sequence after that is different from that of other countries. US home educators seem to be unwilling to take up Sing NEM or Discovering Maths or other series since the progression is different.

In the US, schools focus on Alg 1 in one year, then Geom the next, then Alg 2, then Trig, Calc, etc. In other countries the years after gr 6 cover all these concepts in each year. If you look at yr 7-9 and the GCSE year of MEP, you will see this combination of topics.

I do see some US home educators starting on NEM but most seem to do Lial/Harold/Dolciani/Foerster etc instead.

Maybe I should ask this in the high school area, but is there any reason other than that to not look at NEM? I always figured that would be what we would do after 6b. Has anyone gone through all of NEM? Also what for grades 11 and 12?

  7. What we've done is when I have ds read aloud, if he comes to a word he doesn't know the meaning of he gives me a signal and I make a list of the words. Then when his reading time is over he has to pick 6 of the listed words to write the definition for and use it in a sentence. I think I will start also writing down the page the word is used in his reading so he can instantly go back after finding the meaning to get a better understanding of the story, oh he'll be so thrilled to discover I've got something new for him.;):001_smile:

  8. I like to use two different programs because they can complement each other, teach concepts differently, or might include something the other left out altogether. The dc aren't just learning the skills from one programs theories on mathmatical concepts and I hope gives them a broader range of understanding in mathmatics. By doing two programs ds learns two different ways of looking at math and then is able to combine them and develop his own way of looking at it. Plus it seems like it does the ds good to change it up a couple of times a week and do some from the other. :001_smile:
