Is it reasonable to do Traditional Logic with kids who have not had much other logic?

Recommended Posts

I will wait until high school to start TL this next time around. I've heard some use it earlier, but my older son ran into some trouble with it when he did it earlier. Also this next time, I'm covering informal logic first and then moving into more formal logic studies. I don't know if there's any precedent for doing this, it just makes more sense to me.....

My dd is going to do Traditional Logic her freshman year, and will have finished Algbra 1. Not that you have to do it that way, but she's doing Algebra 1 before high school as she's on a science track and is mathy. She's doing Fallacy Detective now, and did Thinking Toolbox before that.

...and will have dc take it next year (10th grade).

They've both done Fallacy Detective, Thinking Toolbox, and will finish Rulebook for Arguments this summer.

They've also both taken Alg. 1 this year.

My thinking was, after hearing stories of flummoxed parents and students, that I'd rather overprepare them, than the alternative.

(I also tend to agree just a tad with those who put the logic stage--at least for some purposes and in some respects--a little later than many suggestions. 14, 15ish just seemed "right" for us.)

Later better than earlier here, too. I had my then 13yo dd do it and although she could technically do it, I could tell it just wasn't being assimilated very well. She jsut wasnt engaging with the material. I may re-try it next year when she is 15. My ds13 who is logic challenged, will definitely have to wait.
