Resources for dd14 who likes to write creative non-fiction?

Recommended Posts

Not seeing anything you can outsource to that is specifically designed for high school, but here are a few ideas:

For a DIY approach:

The Teaching Writer website: Creative Non-Fiction -- 5 free downloadable lesson plans for early high school

Creative Non-Fiction Writing Unit: Common Core, Journaling -- 9-week unit for upper high school, Teachers-Pay-Teachers

Varsity Tutors: Creative Non-Fiction -- short list of resources

Stuyvesant High School: Creative Non-Fiction -- this link to teacher Jonathan Weil's materials might be able to be used/adapted

Creative Non-Fiction Magazine -- linked is the list of online courses; these are for adults, but if your DD is a strong writer, she might be able to do it. You can also purchase back issues of the magazine, which might be a useful resource if you prefer to make a DIY course.

Getting Started: Learing to Write Creative Non-Fiction

Writing Non-Fiction: The Essential Guide

-- from Udemy, self-paced, for adults wanting to enter the field professionally; short video lessons, articles, supplemental resources

Thank you so much, Lori!

I am looking more for inspiration and creative outlets - resources for her to explore, rather than lesson plans for me to teach. Because it is such a personal thing for her, I don't want to be too involved!

Gotcha. In that case, maybe some of these links might yield ideas:

sparking ideas:

Write My Essay: Creative Non-Fiction Essay Prompts for High School

NY Times: 650 Prompts for Narrative and Personal Writing -- for high school students

5 articles by writers addressing different aspects of writing creative non-fiction -- Creative Non-Fiction Magazine online

almost 50 essay examples to read online -- Creative Non-Fiction Magazine online

summer workshops (probably best to search for programs in your state! but here are a few):

The Kelly Writers House: Summer Workshop for Young Writers -- U. Penn

USC Summer Programs: Writing Workshop -- USC

The Putney School: Summer Art: Writing Intensive -- in Vermont

The Young Writers Workshop: Summer Program -- Univ. of VA

Thought Co: Great Summer Writing Programs for High School Students -- some of the linked programs include creative non-fiction

books:

The Truth of the Matter: Art and Craft in Creative Non-Fiction (Moore)

You Can't Make This Stuff Up: The Complete Guide to Writing Creative Non-Fiction (Gutkind)

Tell It Slant: Creating, Refining, and Publishing Creative Non-Fiction (Miller) -- the first edition contains examples that the newer edition omits

Book Fox: 33 Writing Contests for Teens

Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth: Art and Writing Competitions

NCTE National Council of Teachers of English: Normal Mailer Writing Awards

You/she could check out Write the World. She can share her writing and get feedback from peers. My dd has found it very helpful and fun! They also offer (optional) competitions in a huge variety of genres.

Yes, she should! It looks wonderful.  Thank you for sharing!

Lori, still looking through your resources!

Thanks, Kai! Have you used this?  It looks great.

I have not used it, but I very much want to.  I am currently campaigning to bring my 10th grade son home for English (and a few other courses), and my plan is to use Habits of the Creative Mind along with Building Great Sentences (Teaching Company) in order to do some meaningful, focused work on his writing.
