S/O: Calculators: Virtual versions of popular calculators

Recommended Posts

Thanks to OnMyOwn for posting about Calculator for Calculus because it reminded me that want to transition DS15 from the TI-84 to an HP calculator.  I plan to do this just after the PSAT in October.

In researching this, I learned that many of these calculators are available in virtual form.  I thought it would be nice to have links to the virtual calculators for reference.  I have only included links to apps for the calculators from the manufacturers.  There are plenty of other knock-off apps for other calculators available as well.

As you can see below, only HP offers free or affordable calculator app options and their app for the Prime are available on iOS, Android and Windows.  TI only offers expensive or time-limited trial apps on Windows and MacOS.  Casio has a subscription-only option on iOS and Android.

Please let me know if you find other calculator apps which should be added to this list and I can edit this post.

might want to also consider what calculators are allowed into testing sites and just stick with one of those.  that way they are already familiar with it when they go take their sats/acts etc.  or even in college - what calcs are allowed in for tests.

my son just stuck with his ti-89.   then he didn't need to learn a new one.

would be great if they had an app for that one . . .  .

Here is the list of approved devices.  Of the above, only the Casio ClassPad is not approved since it has a stylus. (The old HP calculators listed are no longer available.)  The HP Prime, TI NSpire and TI-84 Plus CE are all approved.

In addition, anyone taking an AP Calculus exam should read AP Calculus:  Use of Graphing Calculators.

this is good information to have.

ds is in college - and since he already had a ti-89, he kept it. (the high school wanted them to have a ti-85 - ti-89. that way the teacher could give calculator instructions to the students while working through problems).

he's now a college jr. in engineering.
