Cake and Pi
We've used MAP testing for the last 4 years because it was free through our charter, but it seems like we've reached the end of the usefulness of this test. DS#1 scored 4-6 average-yearly-growth intervals higher than the end-of-11th-grade mean score in math this spring. He's only now nearing the end of Beast 5, so I find these results not the least bit helpful or meaningful. We're switching to a different kind of HS charter and will be required to test at least every other year. DH would really like the boys tested yearly. I would like documentation of academic achievement available in the event that they must enter full-time PS. I'd also like to know if/where I need to remediate any other areas and if what I'm doing now is actually helping. So please tell me, oh gurus of testingful testyness, which test(s) do you recommend for yearly or every-other-year academic testing? 4KookieKids
Ha ha. I don't have any advice for you, but I had to laugh out loud after reading your post and then going back and re-reading your title, because I definitely thought it was titled "beast academy testing options" originally and I just had no idea what that meant! :)
Dmmetler
For "get it done to check a box and can actually be useful", I started using talent search tests in 3rd grade.
Jackie
Woodcock Johnson was the most informative for me because it keeps going up until it finds the right level. However, you need a professional tester for this one, so it's not exactly economical. ITBS covered a good range of information, and I could administer it myself, but gave me almost no useful information even testing out of level. But that could be my kid, not the test - she always maxes LA and scores exactly where I'd guess her at in math.
Cake and Pi
For "get it done to check a box and can actually be useful", I started using talent search tests in 3rd grade. Which talent search tests do you like? DS#1 is 9, going into 4th grade, and is really only particularly advanced in math. Except for writing, where he struggles, all other subjects he's mostly working just 1-2 grades ahead. DS#3 is 5, going into K by age but 1st on paper (district grade accelerated), and 3-5+ grades ahead in every subject except writing, where he's about 2 grades ahead. Know of any talent search tests that might be a good fit for either boy now or in the near-ish future?
Dmmetler
We started with the EXPLORE for a young 8 yr old (we did the SCAT once before then, but it was less useful) and then the SAT at 10 and the ACT at 11. Since the PSAT 8/9 has replaced the EXPLORE, I'd probably wait until 4th or 5th because it's a longer test.
