Thoughts on Abeka Lang. Mid. Grades and compare with CLE, if possible

Mostly, I'd love to hear from others who have used Abeka for Language for Grades 4 and up.  I used it our first year of homeschooling for 3rd grade, along with FLL.  That went well.

Currently using CLE for my 3rd graders and have mostly used something else for my 6th grader this year.

I'm considering Abeka for 7th, or possibly CLE.  But I think I would have to start in the 600s with CLE for my DD.  For her sake (having younger siblings), I would prefer something on "grade level."  Workbooks for language work pretty well for us, I don't mind Christian content, and plan to supplement for composition.

I know Abeka doesn't get a lot of mention here, but I know some have used it for grammar, so I'd love to hear your thoughts!

I'm using it with my 5th grader this year.  It's very thorough and open and go for us. I'm planning on using it again next year.   I don't think Abeka assumes knowledge of previous years like CLE does. So I think it would be okay to jump in at the 7th grade level.  Besides, that's the first of the Grammar and Composition books which go through 10th before using the Grammar handbook in 11th and 12th.

ABeka beats grammar to death every.single.year. It is not my favorite.

Also, although there is some writing instruction in the student workbook, most of the actual writing assignments are in the teacher manuals; many homeschoolers don't buy that because they don't really need it...but then they miss the writing assignments. CLE Light Units have everything in them the children need to know. Since you're supplementing composition, that's not that big a deal. OTOH, if you only want grammar, why not do something that is only grammar, such as Analytical Grammar? Or The Stewart English Program?

Susan Wise Bauer wrote a series of articles on writing a research paper. Here is the first of four. www.welltrainedmind.com/writing-the-research-paper-part-i-preparation.   I don't know when she wrote them or if she still recommends it, but she said Abeka was the best, thorough grammar program on the market.  However, she did say to use a different compostion program.  Her recommendation was to use it from Language A (4th) every year, all the way through 12th.  She gave a wonderful explanation why.

I am thinking of using Abeka language next year for my 5th grader, if ALL is not out yet. I wouldn't personally use it year after year, but I think it is good language program.

I emailed them the other day, and they said they don't have a publication date yet.

I thought it was really thorough and easy to use.  My son didn't mind it and actually even though it was a lot more daily work he preferred it over calvert's grammar and Easy Grammar, because he really KNEW The material and wasn't made to guess or constantly lose track.  It is so thorough and it consistently reviews.

They do expect rather small handwriting which wasn't a problem for my son but if your child writes large, you may consider using it down one grade.

The Writing lessons are spelled out more in the TM, and there's not really enough room IN the book and not enough lessons IN the book to teach all the Writing Assignments.  You can either buy the TM and follow that or just stop and teach whatever genre they are covering yourself for a few days, alongside the pages in the book.

For Grammar, Abeka cannot be beat.

For writing for Middle grades up to 6th grade, BJU is a thousand times better.  Every single step gets an entire page devoted to it with plenty of room on the page, examples, checklists and so much more.  Your student can almost completely teach themselves writing with BJU's WorkTexts.  If you can afford it...I would even say use the Abeka for Grammar and the BJU for Writing!  The cost of the two work-texts would be less than one worktext and one TM from each!

Thanks for this idea!  I didn't realize BJU had a decent writing program, so off to check that out. :)  We have done a bit of IEW and will probably do some more over the summer, but it's not necessarily my first or only choice.

DD placed into Level 600 for CLE.  I'm so torn.  My other two have done well with CLE LA.  I'm tempted to have my older DD just start in CLE 600 now and see what we can get through during the summer, so she'd be partly through it.

Sooo, anyone out there who can compare Abeka with CLE (at the middle school level)?  Or another similar program?  Anyone at all? :)
