gardenschooler
I'm in need of a schedule for Jacobs' Geometry. The only one I've found is the Dr. Callahan, but I wonder about that one because it only schedules problems from set I & II. It also doesn't schedule the chapter reviews (and it seems to skip Ch. 13 altogether). Can anyone either guide me to a schedule or help me figure out how to assign the problem sets? I bought the teacher's guide, but I don't see any guidelines in there. Help? TIA.
Lori D.
Just encouragement that we've found both Jacobs Algebra and Geometry easy to schedule for ourselves: read the lesson and the teacher book together and circle selected problems for the student to do (I aimed for however many problems would take about 30-40 minutes to do). If the student was really struggling with the lesson, I scaled back the problems and we'd work them together, and then have the student re-do the lesson the next day, doing different circled problems. For the Jacobs Geometry, since writing proofs was a new skill, I divided most of the lessons in the first few chapters into 2 parts and had the student do half one day and the rest the next day. So scheduling Jacobs here has just been a matter of "doing the next lesson". BEST of luck in finding a more definitive schedule! Warmest regards, Lori D. In The Great White North
:iagree: We did the "Do the next lesson" thing too. For all of our math and science, actually, we just start at the beginning and work through the book. I assigned the odds, unless I saw something really interesting in an even#. MicheleinMN
I bought Kolbe's ( http://www.kolbe.org ) Lesson Plans. I'm not sure they were worth it, but it was nice to see what Kolbe considered okay to skip/skim. HTH, Michele
Laura K (NC)
I don't have my son do only the odds or evens in Jacobs Geometry. The questions themselves do a fair amount of teaching. My son does them all and generally doesn't have time to do set 3 problems. That's a shame because those seem like the most fun, but they don't teach as much as the other two sets. We do, however, skip problems in the Foerster books because the problems have a different purpose.
gardenschooler
Thanks! We'll just go through and pick and choose which problems to do, I guess.
Moira in MA
I second Laura K. about doing set I & set II problems in their entirety. I'm mean and also assign set III. I figure that makes it an honors level course and I'm aiming for that. In our house we do math for up to an hour, after that it's 'homework' to be completed after the rest of their schoolwork is done -- I've discovered my girls to be amazingly efficient at getting their 'homework' done <grin>. Tiramisu
has a syllabus for Jacob's Geometry. They are sold through Emmanuel Books or Adoremus books, and others... I haven't tried it so I can't comment.
