Can I do a DNA study out of order?

Recommended Posts

We are doing life science this year but a lab field trip came up at a national laboratory; the topic being DNA, extraction, etc. I am thinking of doing the DNA chapter out of order to culminate in this. It does not really match the whole building blocks theory but I don;t want to miss out on the trip, or do the trip without info and revisit the DNA in order. Any thoughts?

You would be able to do that easily.  Just teach biochemistry first, so your child understands atoms, molecules, basic bonding, etc...  Then teach the structure of DNA and DNA replication, followed by transcription and translation (transcription and translation are not strictly required to understand the basics of DNA extraction).  Biochemistry is the first biology topic I teach to my children, so it's easily do-able, and even makes the most sense to me.  If you get the Wiz DNA kit off Amazon (about $20), it has terrific DNA experiments, including an extraction.

The trip sounds exciting!  At what facility?

I looked into this a while back but the set is not available. :(

We use our own Legos. I think my kids use mainly the parts from the Star Wars sets.

We also did the paper models
