AimeeM
I love the looks of the CLE Algebra I have on hand. I had AOPS Intro for DD12 on hand, but it is FAR too wordy, even read aloud, for her dyslexic brain to process. She starts glazing over. There is no way, at this time, that I can make this program work for her, so I want to keep with CLE. CLE is tried and true with us. However, I do worry about the lack of word problems. I need word problems without difficult words. Hard to come by at this stage of the math game, eh? She tends to sight read, so words that require sounding out only frustrate her. <---- this is something we're working on in language arts - I do not want to extend her frustration to her one strong area, kwim? SilverMoon
Foerster has great word problems. Challenging. Lial has good word problems too, and older editions are dirt cheap. (introductory alg = alg 1)
rjand6more
How about something like this?
Hunter
Older editions of Aufmann Beginning Algebra are dirt cheap. http://books.google.com/books?id=A1rK1S5tr8AC&printsec=frontcover#v=onepage&q&f=false Back in the 90s there was software developed for Windows 3.1 to supplement these texts. The software works all the way up to XP and I used it for years and years. The software generates an unlimited number of problems, including the word/application problems. Here is the free software if you have a computer old enough to run it. http://college.cengage.com/mathematics/resources/computer_tutor/students/
TracyP
Have you tried Zaccaro? I was going to suggest either Challenge Math or Real World Algebra, and I see there is a new one: Upper Elementary Challenge Math. I have used Challenge Math and it covers some Algebra and many other topics (fractions, decimals, ratios, statistics, geometry, trig). The word problems are challenging, but the language isn't. The wording is very straight forward. There are 4 levels from easy to Einstein. I haven't seen RWA, but assuming the layout is the same as CM, that might be the best one for your needs. wapiti
I'd use word problems from Foerster or Dolciani - easy to look up on a per-topic basis. Another option is Alcumus. I think the language of Alcumus might be a little more straightforward than either Foerster or Dolciani.
ChrissySC
Math Mammoth has In Real Life workbooks. I love these. Take a look at them.
