Has anyone used Essential Learning Institute?

Recommended Posts

We recently signed up our child for Essential Learning Institute's Sensory Integration Therapy (via computer).  They had a booth at the local great homeschool convention, and they partner with Bridgeway Academy (an accredited online school).  Has anyone here had a child go through the program or personally know any children that have and can share their experience?  thank you in advance.

so to update…we are still working through appointments to complete the battery of np tests, but what we do know is there are issues w/ visual and auditory memory, sensory processing.  so, I have been told that until we get farther down the road in OT and ST, we need to pretty much stick with teaching in a spiral manner as much as possible.  We have been doing CLE math and Spellingyousee this summer and those have both been working out well, so I will continue with those.  I am thinking I need to go with Shurley english for him b/c of the high amount of spiral and repetition.  Anyone w/ experience using shurley 3 that can comment on if it is lacking anything for the grade level lang. arts skills that I should be aware of?  thanks!

We have been attempting to use LDHope since this past June and it has not gone well. We did it for 2 months and then took the month of Aug. off. We had to once again take a break. It is too frustrating for my daughter. Today I had a special ed teacher go over my emails that I have sent and their replies and it was eye opening for me. She pointed out how they are not taking any responsibility for the troubles we are facing and have even gone as far to ask me if I have the tv on while working on it. Yes, as a homeschooler of almost 20 years, I was offended at that question, but chalked it up to a non-homeschooler's view of those of us that homeschool. It is very hard for me to face the fact that we have thrown away $2000.00 for this program and I am going to try to make one more attempt to direct it in a way that will work for our daughter. If they don't accept me doing this, well then I will have to walk away. hsmomshutterbug, how long did you try using it and I would love to know what your difficulties with the program were. Also, there are many typos and inconsistencies with the materials which I have a hard time accepting and viewing as a professional product.

Oh my Joyce, that's horrible!  They made you pay $2000 UPFRONT to access this???  Cogmed is the ONLY software that has research behind it for results, and even those vary with the age group.  Our psych mentioned it for ds, and then when I looked at the research it's utterly ineffective for ages 5-7.  The dc clearly has to have enough foundation to be able to USE the software and profit from it.

So that's HORRENDOUS that they took such an extreme amount from you upfront!!  I'd be calling my credit card company, honestly.  That's just outrageous.

Joycemarley-I'm sorry for your negative experience.  Our experience was not positive either.  A total waste of money.  We knew right away, within the first couple DAYS using the program that it was not a good fit and would not be a positive thing.  For us it was one of those things, if we knew then what we know now, we would have never tried it. The entire program is computer based, which can be the opposite of what your child needs, depending on what issues are causing their learning struggles.

Why would any company demand a considerable up front payment?

One reason, can be that they are on the verge of becoming bankrupt?

The other, is that once most people try out their program?  They find it to be ineffective.

Any company that is truly confident in their program, will not require a large up-front payment.

As the effectiveness of their program, is what will keep people paying perhaps monthly subscriptions.

Which also recognizes that their program might not be suitable for some people.

I also wanted to post that my daughter is 12 years old, has verbal apraxia, SPD, and has the maturity of a 5 to 8 year old based on neurological testing.  I would agree with the results. I have let them know this but they didn't seem to hear me until the last time I sent an email discussing how the program has not worked. The last I had heard from them they were going to make changes taking her maturity level into consideration. Today, I ran through the program...didn't really see any changes...some little things were skipped, but that happens here and there for no known reason.

I am posting all of this in hopes that if someone is looking into the program they find this thread about www.ldhopeonline.com and it helps them to make the decision if they should use it or not. I will continue to post about where we end up. I think I have been more than fair to them in allowing them many attempt to work with us and correct the program to make it fit us.

This may be good for a child in school at appropriate grade level but lagging behind a little.

Thanks for listening.
