Susan in TN
I just brought home 40lbs of organic sweet potatoes. Last year I bought organic white potatoes and kept them in my basement pantry, only to have them start sprouting within 2 weeks. So I'm wondering if I will need to use and cook/freeze the sweet potatoes quickly or if they'll store better than the white potatoes? garddwr
I'm not an expert, but I have found that any potatoes with broken skin (cuts, scrapes, etc.) will go bad very quickly. Otherwise, I have found they do better if kept cool.
JenC3
My huge 100 lb harvest is still doing fine in my basement. I store them dirt on in a laundry basket. I check every now and them for a rotten one, but have only had a two. I stored SP's last year for 7 or 8 months.
garddwr
If any of your sweet potatoes do sprout, they grow quite nicely in pots and double as pleasant house plants.
MomsintheGarden
We grow sweets in our garden, and dug ours last October, just before frost. The ones we haven't eaten are keeping well in our heated but cool basement. Handle them gently and they should keep for several more months. If you're worried they will spoil you could always can them. If you want to grow them, sprout a couple in a container of water about 6 weeks before planting out. I'll probably start my slips about April 1.
Amy in NH
Isn't this the end of storage season. When I buy organic sweet potatoes this time of year I plan to use them right away because they are at the end of their shelf life.
Susan in TN
Isn't this the end of storage season. When I buy organic sweet potatoes this time of year I plan to use them right away because they are at the end of their shelf life. They are from CA - don't know if they have a different growing season. Of course, they were very cheap (less than $1/lb) so maybe they were clearing out? They look very good right now, at least. I'll plan to use some for slips - it'll be a good gardening project for the kids!
