For those familiar with Lake Geneva (Switzerland)

We are traveling to France in June, and would like to take a few days from our rental house in Burgundy to drive to Lake Geneva.

In looking at B&Bs and hotels around Geneva/Lausanne, it appears they are very expensive, and I'd like to keep the room at sub-$200 a night (3 people) if I can. Is this possible? Doesn't have to be in either one of these towns, but I'd like the village to be close to the French border, as I'm trying to keep the drive from Burgundy under 4 hours.

Is this area of Switzerland just too expensive for us to do this? We'll be in France a month and we can always take a couple of days to go someplace else, but although I've been to the French Alps last year (Chamonix), I'd like to see a bit of Switzerland.

Any advice would be appreciated!

You might PM GenevaJ. I think she usually hangs out on the high school board and doesn't come over to the General board much.

Good idea....I used to "see" her all the time on the high school board but my homeschooling days are winding down and for the first time in 12 years I find myself with lots of time for the chat board - I like it! :p

I've heard good things about Airnb. It's similar to booking a hotel since you go through the Airnb website, but you are renting individuals' homes or apartments. You can find places all over the world and from what I've seen, many are reasonably priced. https://www.airbnb.com/s/Lake-Geneva--Rivaz--Switzerland?af=173684&c=cat_par_bnb_topic&guests=3&checkin=06%2F01%2F2013&checkout=06%2F03%2F2013

I've never heard of AirBnB - thanks, Sarah. We are doing that in Burgundy through Vacation Rental by Owners, whom I've used before, but I'm happy to check out another company.

Even though this likely won't help YOU, I can't help but reminisce about our amazing trip to France 2 1/2 years ago. (In May, a bit off-season.)

We stayed in a great B&B in Aussois, Chalet-Mourra (which I think is a local network, staying with individual families), only $60 for 2, charming room held 3. Our favorite family of the trip. We then drove on to Chamoix and then slept in an inexpensive chain motel in Fermey-Voltaire (the French side of Geneva).

The drive from Aussois to Geneva was "adventurous" (10+ mile tunnel, thru Alps in both Italy & Swizterland for short periods of time).

We stayed in the Geneva Airport "Formula 1" Motel, on the Ferney-Voltaire (French side of the city of Geneva). $50 for 2, room holds 3. Motel shares the property with a more upscale hotel chain. Charming little town, great food & shops.

Airport straddles Switzerland AND France. We drove to the French side of the airport to drop off the rental car (rented in Marseille), then realized our flight took off on the Swiss side. Lots of walking at 6am to catch our flight. Lots of delightful, inexpensive memories.

Have a great trip. My secret weapon was dd, who liked to shop the Internet for good deals on lodging. :)

Don't you just love France? I never get tired of the villages, and we love how many of them have "flower ratings" as you drive into town.

You've inspired me to keep searching for good deals!

If it matters at all, we spent six weeks near Lake Geneva about ten years ago, as newlyweds on study abroad. We stayed in Leysin, just outside Aigle. We traveled extensively, every day. Our very favorite town was Vevey. The train is ridiculously easy to use all around the lake. Maybe parking and taking the train would be feasible? You could find somewhere cheaper to stay and not worry about driving.

I am so, so, so jealous of your trip. It was the most wonderful summer of our lives. (The picture in my avatar if from Leysin.)

Oh, you are just going to love it!
