can someone give me a brief summary on how this program works. I know I could spend alot of time on the website, but my brain is not functioning too good right now. I am extremely busy with wedding plans for my dd' s wedding in 8 weeks! But, I would like to know exactly what this program covers and how teacher intensive it is. So, if someone could briefly tell me how it works, I can decide if I want to investigate further. THANKS!

Phonics Road covers all Language Arts- phonics, reading (including literature study), handwriting (including cursive), writing, spelling, grammar, and in level 4 a root word study in preparation for Latin. I hope I didn't forget anything. PR is very teacher intensive. It is meant for the parent to watch the Dvd and learn from Mrs.Beers, and then to teach the child. Any other specific questions?

does level one start with a child not reading. Can you skip a level? Are there actual worksheets that come with the program?

Skipping a level isn't suggested because there are rule tunes (spelling rules) and phonograms that are learned in level 1 that are not carried over into level 2. There is review in level 2, but you won't have the original building codes from level 1 to reference.

The student workbook has all of the student worksheets (Blueprints - spelling lists, Building codes - spelling rules, compostion and readers), tool cards (phonogram cards used for practice building words) and clipboard to do practice work.

I accelerated my 5th grader through PR1 in the fall. He is now accelerating through PR2 at a rate of two weeks of the PR schedule per calendar week. I find that even with the accelerated schedule, we are not spending near as long on LA as we did with a combination of other programs pieced together or as long as we did on CLE LA. I also have my younger two in PR1 at a normal pace.

I spend a couple of hours on Sunday afternoons here and there watching several weeks worth of the dvds and taking notes. I take good notes so that I do not have to rewatch in order to teach the next round of kiddos.

This is our daily schedule:

-go over phonograms with all dc....the youngers are learning the advanced ones by reviewing them with their older brother even though they have not been introduced to them in the schedule, yet. We do this with flashcards mostly, but will play a game if we have more time. 5 min

-Older ds (keep in mind this is an accelerated pace)

-dictate and mark half a spelling list, 10 min

-review words from previous lessons (I made a box with all of the words on index cards similar to AAS), 5-10min

-complete half a week of framing codes (grammar part of study), 10-15 min

-complete half a week of literature study, 10-15 min (ds reads the book on his own since it is so below his reading level. You would have a child that is at grade level read this aloud to you, but there is only a small amount scheduled per day)

-quiz new words introduced today, 5 min

That's it! It is going so smoothly and painlessly. This ds needs remediation on his writing skills. Some would have chosen to add in another writing program to do this, but since PR is a complete LA program, I chose to just focus on accelerating it and let those skills develop.

Daily schedule for younger two in PR1...normal pace:

-do phonogram review with older brother, 5 min

-review words from previous lessons, 5-10 min

-dictate and mark 4-7 words (we do school 4 days per week so I split the spelling list up to get completed in that time frame), 5 min

-they dictate a couple of sentences to me and then copy them from the board, 5 min

-they read to me from the readers

-quiz new words introduced today, few minutes

Loving this LA program!

I have not found it to be any more teacher intensive than All About Spelling, FLL and WWE. We do put off certain lessons at times though, because we only have one working DVD player in the house and I don't get around to watching (about 80% of the time I can teach it without watching).

For spelling: all of the words to teach each week are in your teachers manual with the markings and a symbol to remind you to sing a rule tune, it is divided into days for you with a little mark.

Watching the DVD takes about 30 minutes for the week of spelling if you want to watch Mrs. Beers teach it all. It helps me a lot to watch it because it all comes so naturally to me after that, but I can usually skip it now and only check on a word every once in a while, or watch it every few weeks as a refresher course.

For the literature and Grammar there are worksheets and also a written schedule that will tell you what to do that day (like define verb, dictate and diagram the five sentences listed in the manual, etc.) and the tunes are written for you in the beginning of the manual, but the definitions are on the DVD and the directions for the worksheet are sometimes needed. Watching the DVD takes about 5-15 minutes to get all of your instructions for the week.

Phonics Road one teaches the rules for adding suffixes, and I didn't know them before using it, so I wouldn't recommend skipping it. It covers everything in AAS 1 and 2 and parts of 3. There is a lot there. It was designed to use with a non-reader, but we use it for spelling. DD was reading at about 4th grade level before we started it.

Here is a link to what the phonogram cards say: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMAQLW4hIEk

Each time you dictate a word to your student you help them to think through how to spell it, using clues from the phonogram cards and the phonogram sounds. "What is the next sound you hear in the word? Right (long e). Okay in this word it isn't E (short e, long e), no, not EE double e either... That's right (long e, short e, long a) EA! Okay, what's the next sound you hear?

Another example: HAV That's all of the sounds are we done with the word? Right. English words don't end in U or V, add a silent E.

I don't think it takes lots of time most days. Occasionally you will need to fill in an entire building code, which might take 25 minutes (my child doesn't have great handwriting and can't write quickly or it's illegible). We split those things up, so that it's done over a few days while still progressing with the spelling words, meaning we don't get behind. I'm only in level 1, so I don't know how mom or time intensive it is one you move up, but I don't find the first level to be burdensome at all.

The worksheets aren't typical worksheets like most people think of. They're mainly just lined papers. The spelling list sheets have a line for the title, then two columns for words. The building codes are just lined paper that have labeled areas for different building code (phonograms, punctuation, plurals, etc.). There's no busywork at all. There is also no color and there are no graphics, if that matters to your child.
