LOF Pre-Algebra

Recommended Posts

:iagree: The stories incorporate Biology and Economics, this is not a "straight" textbook with a little information, a few examples and a list of problems. The stories have helped my children understand that math is everywhere -- it's not limited to a text book. :D

We're doing LOF pre-algebra with biology right now. (the biology does not detract from the math lesson, it enhances it) Plus the stories are great and it holds my son's interest -- he ASKS to do LOF. A common theme with the Fred series, I guess.

I hadn't heard of the Economics book. Is it somehow redundant, or would it make sense to do that book following pre-algebra with biology? We would have time to do a second book this year as long as it isn't a repeat of what we've already done (from a math perspective.)

Anyone know?

I just finished reading the economics book. It is a follow up to the biology one and focuses on word problems. For the economics part he talks somewhat about the cause of the Civil War (tariffs) and how Abe Lincoln proclaimed in his inaugural address that his purpose was not to interfere with slavery in the South. He discusses freedom vs. liberty, and why it sometimes makes economic sense to buy from other countries as opposed to making it yourself. He also argues why minimum wage is not our friend. Different types of government and its possible downfalls are also stated.

I am glad I read it first so I can discuss these things with ds, and I am looking forward to my 12yo going through it.

Book #2 (pre-algebra with Economics) is not to be missed from what I understand. I was initially curious as well, if I should buy that book or just move on to Beg. Algebra... What I gleaned from these lovely boards is that this book is a companion to #1, not a choice, and that it works on word problems. So, it has not only a different subject focus, but a different algebra focus as well.

Now, I would rather not buy more books than I have to, but LoF is my kids' favorite curriculum, and at the rate we are going, we will finish with Pre-Alg #1 about 2 months early. I hated Algebra, was horrible at it, and I have to say that working with these books is helping ME to be a better teacher.

So, I would say... you shouldn't skip it. I believe that Dr. Schmidt wrote them to be a pair.

My son just completed LOF Pre-Algebra Biology. This is what he learned:

1. The biology is integrated in the math you cannot seperated it even if you tried.

2. My son learned the chemical equation for rust and how to figure it.

3. My son learned Avogadro's number with moles and how to figure it.

4. My son learned about dominant and recessive genes and how to figure that out.

I went to the website and they said that it was high school science. I thought that I pushed science aside to do FIRST Lego League. My son was getting it all along with LOF. I tell you that I would almost recommend that you do this with a chemistry lesson.

Blessings,

Karen

Does anyone know when LOF Pre-Alg1 PHysics will be out?

If it comes out it won't be for a long time because the author of LOF is currently working on an elementary series instead. I hope he gets around to it eventually but said that the elementary series will take several years to complete.

I wandered into the website and he said end of 2011, but not to hold off on Beginning Algebra if you're done with biology and economics. Now I can't find where it said that, but that's what I remember.

That was the original plan but it changed. I emailed him a couple of weeks ago to ask about the elementary series and that's when he told me what I posted.
