Guest NadeenGibson
I bought the recommended science books for my daughter to use during high school but she finds them utterly boring and isn't progressing at all. There were no other science books recommended in WTM (I have 1st edition). I'm looking for ideas. She's at the end of grade 10 now and hasn't learned enough biology to satisfy me. However, I still want her to learn Chemistry and Physics........... running out of time........... All ideas welcome Thanks Nadeen Gibson
PeterPan
You want christian or secular? Have you tried doing a search specific to the high school board? (go up and click search then advanced search) That would give you a lot of options.
Corraleno
How about Conceptual Physics and Conceptual Chemistry? There are free lectures for Conceptual Chemistry here. Jackie
AngieW in Texas
My oldest used Prentice Hall Biology by Miller&Levine, but it was over her head and mine. Biology is not my strength. My middle dd used Holt Biology with the lessons plans from Oak Meadow this year. That has been much better, but I will definitely have my youngest do chemistry before biology. All the biology books seem to hit biochemistry pretty hard right at the beginning now and it is extremely helpful to have a good chemistry background beforehand. My oldest used Spectrum Chemistry last year, but I wasn't very satisfied with it. There just wasn't much to it. She often completed a week's worth of work in about an hour. The labs took a while, but the rest of the program was very light. My oldest started off with Hewitt's Conceptual Physics, which gets great reviews on this board. We dropped it about halfway through. There wasn't enough math for it to make sense to my dd. I switched her to Giancoli's Physics and that has worked much better. I'm planning to use Prentice Hall Chemistry with the lesson plans from Oak Meadow for my middle dd.
Teachin'Mine
My daughter hated science until using Apologia. It's still not her favorite subject, but she loves the books and is learning well. They're Christian and young earth based.
Musicmom
We've used Apologia and it has worked very well for us. It is now listed as one of the science options in the 2nd edition of WTM, though we had heard of it and started using it before. My dc have enjoyed it. It does have some Christian/young earth perspective, mainly in Module 9 of the Biology, and a sentence or two in the Chemistry, but this is easy to skip, ignore, or add in other resources to balance it out if it's not the perspective you prefer. You can also do Apologia at an accelerated pace if you need to, by doing a module per week (as opposed to 1 module/2 weeks) and finishing a book in one semester. Ds did both Physics and Adv Physics in one year this way. It was a little intense and a few labs got dropped, but it worked out fine.
