beachmom
I have a rising 9th grader in my house and I am trying to get a 4-year plan together. Ds has done one online class before with MP and it went well. I am considering other online class providers and thinking about how to structure it all with other dc to attend to. How many classes can most kids handle? I have looked at TPS, both the customized and classical track, and wonder how this all plays out. I also have some special circumstances as in we live 6 hours ahead of eastern time which essentially makes all of these classes into afternoon/evening classes. Any thought? Carol in Cal.
They are offered through postings, rather than live, so you sign on to the lists whenever you want. There are regular weekly assignments and feedback, but you don't have to worry about signing into a class at a particular date and time. One of the advantages to their classes as well is that students can read all of the work posted by everyone in the class--more like a writing workshop. That is rare and helpful. FloridaLisa
How many classes can most kids handle? I think this depends on your particular child. My son's was maxed out at two at a time. Not because of the workload but because he only wanted so much computer time. Online learning was just less than stimlating for him and, in the end, he was much better served by live teachers and a live class. My dd is different. She is organized, self-initiated, highly responsible with her work and follows through when needed with the teacher. I think she could easily handle 3 or 4 online classes. Again, though, I'd be reluctant to outsource to too many virtual classes because I'm afraid it might get isolating. YMMV! I haven't done Potter's School. I do know from friends whose dc have done PS that they are generally pretty demanding. HTH, Lisa
beachmom
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. I really appreciate it. Is anyone doing the Potters School Classical Track? I've seen it asked about here but with little response. I'm curious if anyone is doing this and how it is going.
Gwen in VA
How many classes can most kids handle? I agree that the number depends on the kid and his work habits. The number also depends on the class. Just like in our high school days, some classes are harder than others. Some online classes my kids have taken gobbled up truly amazing amounts of time (up to 2 hours or more per day), while others took relatively little (under an hour per day). newbie
Thru K12 Independent there are no set hrs. Just complete work by deadlines. Veritas Press has set times and my youngest takes 5 classes, but they are split thru the wk. 2 a day, 3 hrs online and more study time offline after.
